I think you are missing the point. Running a Ferrari fast is not the same as trying to get the same performance out of a Berlingo. If you cripple the performance of the Berlingo, you are going to end up with something very crap.
Where did the Berlingo come from? Was it towing your Ferrari? Forget cars. Amps are designed to run down to their stated Ωs, but at a risk of increased heat. Yes they have fans, heatsinks & other protective measures, but the laws of physics still apply to it. If someone designs a cab that produces the same db as a good 8Ω cab running from the same amp, but reduces the heat on the amp, why is that a bad thing? Going back to cars. It's like your Ferrari having 5 gears & mine having 6. Going into 6th is going to put less strain on the engine.
That's not really what the amp was built for though, is it? Not running your amp at full tilt thus not straining it isn't something that would attract me into a sale.

Who said anything about redlining it? Shall we just tinker with it and put a sticker on the back saying that it's limited to 50mph instead?
Just like a Ferrari is built to go fast. The same logic applies... The harder you run something, more wear & tear you put on the parts. The lower the Ω the more current is going through the amp's components. Current = heat & heat reduces the life of the components. They might well last the full time that you have your amp, but if you can get a great sound with plenty of volume* and not have to run the amp as hot, why would that be a bad thing? * "Sound & Volume"... I've never heard one of these cabs, so I can only go on what I've read. For all I know, I might not like the sound.
-
If you run your Ferrari regularly to the red line, it's not going to last as long as what it would if you keep it below the red line.
-
Looking at it from a different view, if you were to use 2 12Ω cabs, you're not running a 4Ω amp to it's minimum load, therefor not putting such a strain on the components.
That's the longest pic URL I've ever seen that doesn't display a pic!
Cheers! I had trouble with every pic I tried.
*Posts pic of someone eating popcorn in a cinema*
I don't believe you! I've searched this entire thread and there's no such a pic. For that, I'm having some of yours...
xgsjx- I'm currently running a 650watt rated amp through these cabs and it is sometimes a struggle to hear myself above the drummer and our 2 guitarists in what is quite a small rehearsal space. I'm just guessing that 2x185watts will struggle a bit. I don't tend to go above half volume on my current amp though so we'll see. I'm also guessing that the stereo power of the amp at 8ohms won't have enough oomph to get the best out of the cabs I currently have. Again, until I actually try it out I won't know. Wanted to check the bridged daisy chained operation for safety more than anything else.
Decibels (that's how loud you are) isn't measured in watts. I'm gonna take a guess that it's our cabs that are the problem & not the amp (I could be wrong). If your drivers can't move a lot of air, then they're not gonna produce many db no matter how many watts you heat them up with. Or... It might be your amp? What amp & cabs do you currently have? It might be worth trying your 4x10 & your 2x15 separately & see which you like the sound of best & gives you the most db & then sell the other & get a matching cab to the one you keep. I have a 2x10 combo where the amp is rated @ 350 watt at 8Ω & the 2 10" drivers at 400w, which can easily keep up with a loud drummer and 2 guitarists that only know how to turn up (& I've endured quite a few). The drivers are rather good & do a lot of bouncing to move lots of air, but I'm not doing any big venues at present. There's a few folk on here with just single 2x12 or 2x15 cabs that can handle most situations.

The Greatest Bass Designer Of All Time, Ever. (Part two)
And lets not forget Paul Tutmarc, who made the first fretted electric bass, some 15 years earlier than that nice Mr Fender. J.
I'd put him ahead of Leo Fender. Leo took the instrument and mass marketed it, he never invented it. He did give what could have been a nice looking instrument a hideous top horn*, so he drops several places from the top 5 designers because of this. My top designer, for aesthetics alone, would probably be Jens Ritter. *This is my opinion, some folk actually like it! -
This is interesting for me as I've just bought an Ashdown MIBass Amp head and I'm still pondering which Cab/Speaker to get
Take your amp & bass along to a good shop with a selection of cabs & try out as many as you can (took me months) & get whichever one has the best sound that You like. If you find that the cab isn't loud enough at gigs, get a 2nd identical cab. This way you'll get more of the sound that you like. Another option is to try a Barefaced cab. Alex offers a 30 day free trial (or is it money back?) to make sure you're happy with the cab.
Harsh, but true!
It does sound harsh. Sorry AP, it wasn't meant to.

I had 2 Marshall 15" cabs back in the 80s. The 2x10 I have now has more lows & goes louder.
-
Phil Jones likes the trouser flapping ability of 5" speakers. If you're finding smaller speakers a bit gutless, I'd suggest you stop trying cheap/old/rubbish cabs & try out some decent cabs instead.
EA with 12 or 10 speaker? Even Glock attracts me a lot.
IIRC it was a 10. I've never tried a Glockenklang, but the name itself has always made me want to have a go on one.

Just having a wee look & Russ Andrews actually have a 3/4 mitre HDMI cable for £216 (or 20m for just £1592) & a 1/2 mitre USB cable for just £686. I think their customers probably have nothing else to spend their money on.
I can see how the analog connection thing could make a difference, especially if you're replacing the often crappy leads that come with PC speakers etc. But for USB and other digital cables, it's not just some kind of subjective opinion about sound quality-it's that digital connections fundamentally don't work that way. The data you receive will be exactly the same each time, otherwise computers, the internet etc just wouldn't work. When you buy an album from iTunes, your copy of it is identical to mine even though both sets of data have taken completely different paths to our computers. The only time this isn't true is when something goes wrong, in which case the errors aren't a simple issue with sound quality, but are usually much more serious, like a completely unplayable file. Sorry, IT lecture over. ....my inner geek gets annoyed when people who write for hi-fi mags don't take the time to learn the basics of the technology that they get paid to write about.
Codswallop! My Monster HDMI cable makes the 1s much more aligned & stops them curving with the 0s.

Before I got my Markbass gear I tried an EA combo, which was nice, but rather heavy. I tried a PJB Suitcase, which sounded nice at low volume, but groaned & let out a fart when I turned it up. I've never tried the other brands you mention though.

That's a very nice wee rig. Maybe have a look at MarkBass. I've been very pleased with my rig.
I bet Virgin were expecting you to buy £3 lead. Did they reimburse you the £80?
They did indeed. I'd been chasing them for a good few months & they kept giving false promises, so as I wasn't getting the use of the HD side that I was paying for, I thought it would be an apt rebuke. I hoped by doing that, that they would always make sure the HD boxes come with an HDMI cable & not mess other people about.

I struggle to make the monthly one, let alone a weekly thing. Every month I see the pic & come up with an idea, often getting the basic idea recorded too, but rarely do I get something to post. Damn life gets in the way of all these things that I want to do. Great pic. I used to do a bit of freehand climbing up structures & rocks like quarry walls or cliffs, but never hung off any with one hand (well, not intentionally). That was when I was in my teens & 20s, now I climb stairs instead. I'll try again for this month.
I'm not that bleedin' daft! ( or indeed that bleedin' rich). I have got some very modest but well-chosen cables in my hifi , but I don't have any fancy power cables. I do have a fairly inexpensive power conditioner, though. Does that make me an eccentric? Probably.
A power conditioner isn't a bad thing to have, nor is decent audio cables. When I had an HD V+ box, Virgin never supplied an HDMI lead. I called them a few times, each time they promised to post one. Eventually they told me to buy one & they'd reimburse me. Off I went & spent £80 on a monster lead. When I A/B that next to my £3 HDMI lead I see no difference, though my wife swears that the 0s are a bit more O.
-
Dingus, did you spend £2k on a nice shiny kettle lead?
-
Wikiloops is also a good place to get lots of good loops for various instruments (& even submit your own).
At the current retail prices, I would think long and hard before actually peeing on any German-made Warwick. Maybe start off peeing on a Rockbass or,at most, a Pro Series one and see how you go on. Those Made in Korea Warwicks are very good quality and you probably wouldn't notice much difference between peeing on one of them and a proper German one, anyway .
I played a German made Warwick $$ a few years ago & it was a lovely instrument, would have one anytime. A with months after, I played a Rockbass Corvette, I wouldn't pee on it if it were on fire.
No but I have tried to put the butter into the dish washer.
Haha! That's probably gonna be my next effort.
