  1. I’ve heard good things about the Novation gear (their synths are good value for money too). I use Logic in band situations too, but may get mainstage, as it’s more performance oriented. I’ve got a Native Instruments S61, which is a nice controller, but my choice for live playing is my Roli Rise25. Can get very expressive on it. 😎
  2. Most wanna be singers take offence when someone suggests singing lessons. We had a songwriting class a few months before covid hit. Most of the worship team was at it & the chap leading the course said "Look at this guitarist's kit, He's got a Les Paul guitar and a Kemper, he's probably spent about £3k of his own money on those 2 things. How many of you singers have your own mic? though you don't have to, the church supplies them. What you could do though, is spend some money on singing lessons. No matter how good a singer you are, singing lessons are always a good investment". It fell on deaf ears (& their singing abilities prove it). Anyhoo, I'm happily no longer playing in the worship team & last week joined a Funk/Jazz/Electronica infused band. Had one jam last week & had the most fun playing that I've had in years! 😎
  3. I've had my bolt on Ibby since 1990. It's a 24 fret bolt on neck & I'm regularly up the dusty end (a couple of songs even use that high G) & never had any access issues due to the neck being bolted on. But the fact that the bass has a bolt on neck played no part whatsoever in my choosing it over the other basses. It was the sound & playability that made it mine & it could have had a through neck for all I care. Other basses have came & went. This one remains (alongside a recent StingRay5 Sub, which weighs a ton). My advice is get the bass that feels best in your hands, not what the paper specs say. Then upgrade the pickups if you want.
  4. I've never fired anyone from a band, but I think you've went about it the best way. You've given them feedback on why & it's entirely up to them on how they want to take it.
  5. See, that's my thing... I love jazz. Recently discovered R+R=Now & Collagically Speaking is an amazing album (IMO of course).
  6. So are you saying you don't like ANY instrumental songs? To me, it's the song as a whole. I don't care if the leading instrument is a vocal, a bass, lead guitar or a triangle, if the song sounds good to me, that's what counts. I love the bass. A great bassline can really make or break a song (though I think the same can be said for any instrument). Here's an entire audience singing along with the bass & loving it...
  7. Cheers Dad. I've not heard that for years. I remember posting it, saying "I do like a bit of Manring". To which the long since banned BigBassChief replied "Preferably shaved Phillipino".
  8. I have to say, I agree. Many of the indie albums were 2-3 ok songs & the rest was poor quality filler. Paul Weller’s solo stuff is meh.
  9. I was there. They have a sound of their own & once you start listening to them more, they really grow on you.
  10. I've never listened to that album for years. Just popping it on now. 😏
  11. Back in my days of gigging, I earned petrol money & beer. That was it. This is true as long as you're enjoying doing what you love. Me & the Mrs used to love making cakes as a hobby. But as a business, it got to a point where it became unenjoyable and stressful, so we packed it in. I dare say the same can go for gigging. If you're playing in a band & have the same set of songs that you always play (especially if it's a function band ,where you might not like 1/2 the songs), then for some, that joy could disappear through the repetition.
  12. As a kid in the 70s, I though Elvis was 💩 He’s a 1 man boy band.
  13. Defo a popular opinion with everyone I know. Elvis does indeed suck.
  14. Here’s a possibly unpopular musical opinion…. I don’t know how true it is & it’s not my opinion, but it is “an opinion”. People who dislike slap bass only do so because they’re crap at playing slap bass. Me…. I like a bit of tastefully done slap bass.
  15. After 31 years, Ten by Pearl Jam is a very good album. Sorry, wrong thread?
  16. Dancing Queen is an awful song.
  17. It is indeed. Still surprised at how much of a difference good pickups make. That’s where to spend the money for upgrades IMO.
  18. Fair enough. Sounded pretty much the same to me, but I do wear hearing aids due to partial deafness.
  19. Watch the first video in the thread (if you haven’t already). It shows a $100 guitar sounding identical to a custom built one when the pickups & strings are the same. I’m still looking for any that prove otherwise, but so far I’ve found nothing.
  20. That's a good point. My thinking is that although it seems wood has little to no effect on tone, it does have an effect on the playability of an instrument. I still plan on having a nice £2k+ bass, not because it may or may not sound different from a decent £6-700 bass with the same pickups, but because hopefully more attention to detail will have went into it, giving a pro quality playability and feel as well as being comfortable. I know that it's not a given with all higher priced instruments, which is why I'd likely be looking at the smaller companies. If I had the funds, it'd be a Ritter. 🤑
  21. Think that’s bad, look at rickenbacker! 😂
  22. But you'll pay extra for a good chef.
  23. I’ve respect for good DJs (having DJ’d in the past). It’s a skill in itself to put together a good set list & be able to mix in snippets of other songs on the fly so that they don’t sound like 2 songs playing over one another is crucial. Reading the crowd (who are there to dance) is very important. I don’t class DJs as musicians. However, producers are very much so. Just on different levels as any other musician would be.
