1. Dubstep effects. Like this... https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/the-auroral-zone
2. The VLE on the Markbass amp is a Low Pass Filter. However, if you're wanting a beefier sound then the Moog LPF adds a shedload of depth to the sound. I've went for a more Drum n, Bass/Dubstep sound & found that Flatwound strings, octave, dirt, LPF & a little chorus gets me what I want. But it's all about messing with gear (be that bass, amp, pedals or all them) until you get what you're after.
3. I've seen it before, but it still brings a smile.
4.
That seems a very short life time for any flats. You must really give your strings some abuse.
If I was solely a finger player, then they would probably last a lot longer. But I have a few songs that I play pick or slap too.
5.
I`ve tried many different types of flats on my basses and can`t get on with them, however whenever I`ve tried a bass out that has TIs on it, I`ve really liked the feel. That said, when I play live I`m a fairly hard-hitter so I think the low tension wouldn`t be a good thing for me.
Don't worry about being a hard hitter. I didn't have any issues & I can be quite aggressive with the strings (I suppose that's why they only lasted 3 years).
6. I loved my Tommysticks. Snapped the D & have now got a set of Chromes. They still need worn in, but so far almost as bright as rounds!
7. I suppose if everyone midscoops, it leaves a space for the vocals to sit. Too often you get guitarists who don't scoop but boost the low mids & then all that can be heard, is them. I think it's important if there's 2 guitarists for them to have very different sounds or one set with very little in the way of mids & 'tother with little top end (both with very little in the way of bass), but it takes a bit of time to get guitarists to do this. My guitarists are now working quite well together. Like is said above, it's about getting each instrument to fit & get the band sounding like a band & not a bunch of soloists.
8. From what I've seen of recent Ampeg build quality, it's been a bit Gibson. Random. What about one of the Barefaced cabs that's in the For Sale section? Not sure if any are 4Ω though.
9. Have a look at these, they're a little lighter than the Peavey... http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Genz_Benz_Contour_Combos_210,_115.html If you can push your budget to @ £500, then something like a 2nd hand Markbass combo could be had. which would be a lot lighter.
10. FUnny thing I found when looking for an electro acoustic a few years back, even 2 of the same model can sound different when unplugged. I went round everywhere in Glasgow trying different ones & ended up with a rather nice Freshman.
11. Try telling my wife that. Erm...
12.
There's me thinking this was about a whammy bar ..
As my wife tells me, it's not a whammy bar, it's a WahWah lever!
13. My influences for the style I'm playing now are the likes of Bond, Janek Gwizdala, John Davis & also a lot of jungle, breakbeat, drum n' bass, house & funk. All good fun
14. What's your budget? There's something to fit just about every budget & the choice is yours.
15. And a grid view. Or columns. Yes, columns would be good.
16. Have a look at the Moog Bass Murf. Not cheap, but it has tap tempo & I've found it quite a box of tricks. If you're near Perth, you're welcome to meet up one Wednesday night. I made a video of it, but I never really used the tremolo side in it, though I do use it for tremolo on a song now. About 3:52 has a little tremolo & also @ 11:18 I use the LFO as a tremolo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jisrnigFkAw
17. Try it in your amp's effects loop, some have a 50% blend (MarkBass have a jumper to change it). If that doesn't work, you could split your bass signal so one side remains dry & the other into the muff & then sum the 2 signals back together.
18. I like the music, the idea is excellent & I'm sure it's a great experience, but that video was boring.
19. I'd try out some other 2x12 cabs if the Aguilar doesn't have the sound you want. A couple of good quality 2x10s would be a good option over a 4/6x10 also.
20. I have a Snap-on Blue point gas iron that I bought about 20 years ago for @ £40. It's in my wires bag that goes with me to gigs & rehearsals so if there's an issue, I can fix it there & then. Mine's very similar to this one, but Blue Point branded. It's had the same tip on it since I bought it & it's seen a lot of use & still in good nick.
21.
I cant download it yet though
Oops!
22.
I'm also wondering if I got the correct cab (1x15) when perhaps a 2x10 would have cut through more.
That's down to the cab design & what driver is used. Speaker diameter has no bearing on the tone. Mess about with your bass' tone controls & the amp's EQ, try cutting the lows a little & boosting the mids a small amount & see if that helps. EQ is there to help you get the sound you want (it's better to cut frequencies rather than boost). Quite often what sounds good at home doesn't cut it when the band start to play, so try doing this either at rehearsal or if you have any recordings of your band, play along with it at a decent volume. If that fails, try some other cabs until you find one that you like.
23.
Okeedokee, I've got a few in, not that many this time, was everyone rather daunted by this one do you think?
I'll send you mine now...
24. I could be wrong, but isn't AC in the UK positive & negative & in the US it's 2 positives? An AC power supply usually just reduces the voltage of the mains power whereas a DC PSU would use the AC mains power to run a small transformer to generate a lower voltage supply. I'm surprised it worked on a reverse polarity, though the moogs are hardy pedals (I accidentally put the wrong polarity through my LPF too once). The Moog pedals will happily run on any voltage from 9 to @ 15 volts. My MF-105b is daisychained on a 9v PSU & the MF-101 has it's own 12v.
