1. There's plenty folk on here with TC rigs that are very happy with the volume. Watts do not = volume.
2.
1 112 cab in a metal band? I'm not sure that would work. I think a 410 or 212 would have a better chance of success.
Nah, defo need 2 8x10s!
3. I've been using a Godlyke Powerall to power all except the Moog LPF (it won't share power with other pedals without making a noise about it). It's 1.7A & I got it from DV247 for @ £18. They don't seem to stock em anymore.
4. We have a regular weekly evening slot in one of the rooms in the local studio. It's a decent size with a decent PA. drummer brings his breakables & uses the kick & toms. Guitarist use the supplied 1/2 stacks (which kinda irritates me as I think they should use the gear that they're gonna gig with) & there's a SWR 4x10 cab with a Peavey TNT sitting on top of it (I take my Markbass). £22 split between 5 for 2 hours isn't bad.
5. I played 4 fretless Jazz basses side by side. The MIA was an awesome bass for both sound & build. The MIM was rather underwhelming & whereas it had a decent enough build, it felt poor next to the MIA & didn't pack the beef either. Very disappointing. The Squire was equally as good as the MIM, but at 1/3 of the price, I'd happily buy this & upgrade it with flats & better electrics & still have a cheaper instrument than the MIM that sounds far better with as good as build quality. The Jaco was a verrrry nice bass, but I wouldn't say it was worth the £500 difference between it & the MIA. So my winner was the MIA. YMMV though.
6.
I'm not sure what it is, but I can't hear beat one, whether it's in 4/4 or comes in late. My teacher (Hi Matt ) started me off on Cissy Strut this week, not only is it on the off beat but when he played some drum tracks I had real difficulty picking out which beat was the beginning of the bar or not. I listened to some stuff in the car on the way home and even then I'm not sure I got it right. Maybe I should become a guitarist
Can you hear beat 2 & 4? Maybe you're a reggae bassist. Cissy Strut is 88 bpm. Put a metronome on at 88bpm & get the speed of the 1234. Stop the metronome, put Cissy Strut on & count the 1234 at the speed the metronome was going. The snare hits the 2 & the 4 & another on the 4+ (you don't need to count that one). If you can find the 2&4 then the 1&3 will come easier. D this without bass in hand, just learn the rhythm of the song.
7.
some fives are obvious fives and sound clumsy but what about the real clever fives that dont immediately strike you as being a five? Dave Brubecks Take Five is a very skilfully crafted 5 as is the chorus in Wind Up Working in a Gas Station
Wait until Pink Floyd's Money makes the setlist! I've always counted the beats & bars in my head (it was a good skill when I DJ'd as it meant that melodies, etc didn't fall in the middle of another).
8. Can you count? If it's in 4/4 then you only need to count to 4, 5/4 requires an extra syllable. Ask the drummer if he'll do the counting out loud to start with.
9. I've posted in Gigs & no BCers have turned up (probably due to the locale), but someone from another forum turned up at the last gig my old band ever did. Things like Facebook & local media are the best places to advertise gigs.
10. Oooh, Shinnies! Shouldn't cause any problems. Werdjagittem?
11. My influence re: tone is from Drum n Bass, House, Electronica & the like. One of my guitarists last night said that he feels the bass in his chest more than he hears it.
12.
Tbf, everything has moved on... and some of those amps weren't a high bar in the first place...or rather I certainly recall a few horror stories..
I know. The only one's I had that I liked was the Peavey & the Marshall. But still not a patch on the MB. I've used some good sounding heavy rigs in the past too (just didn't own them).
13. I posted this elsewhere, but to get Guitarchat off the ground, here's an educational video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwIvUbOhcKE
14. More guitarist should try this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwIvUbOhcKE
15. Pros have roadies to lug the gear. Me, I run into a venue with combo in one hand, pedalboard in the other & bass slung over my back & set up as quick as I can. If it's just a straight does heavy sound better than light, then my Markbass combo sounds far better than the 8 ton 4x10 Trace Elliot combo I had & also far better than the Carlsberg, Peavey or Marshall things I had prior to that.
16.
Or Aguilar. I tried out an Aggie set-up at the London Bass Bash and was very impressed, it was very warm, round and full, much like Ampeg. There`s got to be a reason why Aguilar are like by a lot of heavy rock players.
That's easy! From a distance it looks like "Airguitar", which should get the audience rocking!
17.
But the player might. Surely that counts for something..?
Of course it does.
18. I completely missed last month's. I'll make an effort for this month though! I'll need to go & have a listen to last month's entries.
19. If you want that "Valve" sound, there's plenty of good valve pedals that do an excellent job. I couldn't tell you how well they compare, but if you're gigging & want an easy "in, out", then it's a no brainer. The punter isn't gonna know the difference between a heavy amp & class D.
20.
It won't sound at all like an Ampeg though
With a preamp pedal it can do a pretty convincing job.
21.
If you like the ampeg sound then only ampeg will do IMHO
Try telling Lozz that.
22. I'd suggest trying some of the microheads such as the Markbass LM etc, as you can pop it in a bag over your shoulder & get a good small cab such as the Barefaced Midget. Like gsgbass says though, the Markbass combos are superb & the same size as just buying a seperate Markbass cab & if you did need a bigger rig, you could always add another cab. For £1200 you could pick up a 2nd hand 121 combo & 121 ext cab & probably have a little change.
23. If you can find a Vox Venue 30 Bass, they're good for home & small gigs & usually less than £100 s/h.
24.
Don't hear too many guys that can match the groove that Nile Rodgers (Chic) injects into the gig. Now that's one hell of a guitar player.
The problem that I find with guitarists is they seem to think what he plays is boring to play as there's not too much in the way of chord changes. I've tried explaining that it's more about the right hand technique & getting a groove from the guitar as well, but they want to play their complex stuff like Johnny B Goode (I hate that 3 chord pile of overrated turd).
25. Sell up & buy a good Workstation keyboard!
