1. Take your time. It's a new technique to you, so practice slowly & you'll soon build up speed. Start by doing the pattern on just the one string & the one note (I'll suggest the F on the D string). Right hand pattern for your fingers... 1-321_321_321_32 & so on It's a pattern that's used in a lot of rock/metal when it's not octaved. Once you get the hang of that, then try doing the "1" an octave lower (playing the pattern that you shared). It takes time & may take a few days/weeks/months, but you'll get there.
2.
IMO there really is no need for 6 strings on a bass (for most regular types of music). I do understand the need for a low B but a high C is encroaching on the realms of the regular six string guitar surely...
But what is a "regular type" of music? Jazz? Prog Rock? Electronica? Pop? A lot of styles can make good use of a 6 string bass when it's in the right hands (just as with a 4 string). I used to play in a folk band (use the term "folk" very loosely there) & there was a couple of songs that having a high C would have made the bassline that bit easier than having to reach for the 24th fret on the G.
3. It depends on what you're covering & how you play. If you play covers as they were recorded, then learn the words properly. If you play your take on the songs, then there's nowt wrong with putting your spin on the lyrics too.
4. I'm sure someone has a Billy Sheehan quote in their sig? Something like: Interviewer "have you thought about playing a 5 string?", Billy "You should only play a 5 after you've spent a bit of time on a 4", Interviewer "how long's that?", Billy "at least 20 years". I've been on a 4 for almost 30 years.
5. I want a 5, preferably fretless. I only want the extra string for ease of playing. I have an octaver for the lower notes.
6. I found Gumtree to be the best place, then Joinmyband, then Bandmix. That's a lie. Most of the band I found through work. Gumtree & JMB got me a lot of wannabe singers & finally the excellent singer we have now.
7. There's plenty of pedals that can split your signal & then you can use effects on the line to the guitar amp. Not a cheap option, but the Moog Bass Murf would be a good splitter pedal for this purpose as one channel can have just lows & the other everything else (I use it, but sum the signals back together to the one amp).
8. If your amp has a "tuner out", then why not something like one of these to pop on top of your amp? http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Tanglewood-Handheld-Tuner-Silver/JHU
9. I'd try some out. Thomann do a 30 day money back, I'm sure other shops do similar. Ignore the watts, it doesn't dictate how loud an amp will go.
10. To cover most sounds, I have octaver, filter (with exp pedal & auto wah), dirt & chorus. There's no correct answer to your question though.
11. I do mentally, but it's involentary.
12. There's plenty folk on here with TC rigs that are very happy with the volume. Watts do not = volume.
13.
1 112 cab in a metal band? I'm not sure that would work. I think a 410 or 212 would have a better chance of success.
Nah, defo need 2 8x10s!
14. I've been using a Godlyke Powerall to power all except the Moog LPF (it won't share power with other pedals without making a noise about it). It's 1.7A & I got it from DV247 for @ £18. They don't seem to stock em anymore.
15. We have a regular weekly evening slot in one of the rooms in the local studio. It's a decent size with a decent PA. drummer brings his breakables & uses the kick & toms. Guitarist use the supplied 1/2 stacks (which kinda irritates me as I think they should use the gear that they're gonna gig with) & there's a SWR 4x10 cab with a Peavey TNT sitting on top of it (I take my Markbass). £22 split between 5 for 2 hours isn't bad.
16. I played 4 fretless Jazz basses side by side. The MIA was an awesome bass for both sound & build. The MIM was rather underwhelming & whereas it had a decent enough build, it felt poor next to the MIA & didn't pack the beef either. Very disappointing. The Squire was equally as good as the MIM, but at 1/3 of the price, I'd happily buy this & upgrade it with flats & better electrics & still have a cheaper instrument than the MIM that sounds far better with as good as build quality. The Jaco was a verrrry nice bass, but I wouldn't say it was worth the £500 difference between it & the MIA. So my winner was the MIA. YMMV though.
17.
I'm not sure what it is, but I can't hear beat one, whether it's in 4/4 or comes in late. My teacher (Hi Matt ) started me off on Cissy Strut this week, not only is it on the off beat but when he played some drum tracks I had real difficulty picking out which beat was the beginning of the bar or not. I listened to some stuff in the car on the way home and even then I'm not sure I got it right. Maybe I should become a guitarist
Can you hear beat 2 & 4? Maybe you're a reggae bassist. Cissy Strut is 88 bpm. Put a metronome on at 88bpm & get the speed of the 1234. Stop the metronome, put Cissy Strut on & count the 1234 at the speed the metronome was going. The snare hits the 2 & the 4 & another on the 4+ (you don't need to count that one). If you can find the 2&4 then the 1&3 will come easier. D this without bass in hand, just learn the rhythm of the song.
18.
some fives are obvious fives and sound clumsy but what about the real clever fives that dont immediately strike you as being a five? Dave Brubecks Take Five is a very skilfully crafted 5 as is the chorus in Wind Up Working in a Gas Station
Wait until Pink Floyd's Money makes the setlist! I've always counted the beats & bars in my head (it was a good skill when I DJ'd as it meant that melodies, etc didn't fall in the middle of another).
19. Can you count? If it's in 4/4 then you only need to count to 4, 5/4 requires an extra syllable. Ask the drummer if he'll do the counting out loud to start with.
20. I've posted in Gigs & no BCers have turned up (probably due to the locale), but someone from another forum turned up at the last gig my old band ever did. Things like Facebook & local media are the best places to advertise gigs.
21. Oooh, Shinnies! Shouldn't cause any problems. Werdjagittem?
22. My influence re: tone is from Drum n Bass, House, Electronica & the like. One of my guitarists last night said that he feels the bass in his chest more than he hears it.
23.
Tbf, everything has moved on... and some of those amps weren't a high bar in the first place...or rather I certainly recall a few horror stories..
I know. The only one's I had that I liked was the Peavey & the Marshall. But still not a patch on the MB. I've used some good sounding heavy rigs in the past too (just didn't own them).
24. I posted this elsewhere, but to get Guitarchat off the ground, here's an educational video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwIvUbOhcKE
25. More guitarist should try this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwIvUbOhcKE
