Great thread. Guess it depends how you play bass and what you are playing for. I'd only use effects at a very minimum to enhance a bass sound because essentially it plays the most basic important part in music that no other instrument really does, provide the low bass to fill the sound! That's what I love about the bass. The guitar is part of of many treble instruments that have a more noticeable range of tones for our ears so it makes sense to have more effects etc. I can see why you'd use a little effect, it can change the feel/sound in a subtle but important way, but you usually wouldn't want to do much more or it'll lose itself. I'm usually quite happy the way the bass sounds with tone adjustments on it's own. The only pedals I do use occasionally are compressors and short reverb.
Like you say, it depends on the music. Many traditional genres don't require effects on bass (country, folk, jazz, etc), but that doesn't mean they can't be incorporated to good use. Much of the other stuff like electronica, dubstep, breakbeat, funk & trip hop benefit greatly from effects & many couldn't be played how they are without any fx. I use quite a few effects in the majority of the songs I play.

1/2 the fun of getting pedals is playing about with their order until you find what works best for you. I'd also consider adding a dirt pedal of some sort. Having octave, dirt & filter is a good starting point to produce some great synth like sounds. Though having a synth pedal too could be rather useful. Important part..... Have fun!

I've ordered a set of Chromes. the winning factor being that I should have them for Wednesday & they are £29 including postage. I'll let you know what I think of them on Thursday.

Source Audio BEF (the BEF Pro is dearer)?
-
Unfortunately neither Strings Direct nor Stringbusters have single TI flats other than the low B & top C & I can't find anywhere else that sells them. What are the La Bella strings like? I need to get ordering them in time for Wednesday's sesh.
-
Well after just over 3 1/2 years of playing TI Jazz flats, I've just snapped the D string. Does anyone know where a single string can be bought? If not, I'm thinking a new set of strings may be in order. I really like the TIs, so if I replace them, what other flats should I consider? I'd like to retain the low end, but not have too thumpy a sound (like some folk have said about the La Bellas) & retain a good amount of top as I'm often up the dusty end. What are the D'Addario Chromes like? Do they have a decent low end depth to them?

You can get a Mac & run Parallels on it, thus having OSX & Windows at the same time (I have). I've had my iMac for 6 years now & had no issues with it other than it could do with a clearout. I've got a 2 1/2 year old HP laptop that's one step away from the bin. Whenever you're not using it, you have to sit it upside down to stop it from shutting itself down & it's running like a 3 legged tortoise (with no feet). Why is it PCs & Laptops do this? Every one I've had have required some stupid prop. Had a laptop which would only work if there was something propping up the left corner of it, a PC that would only run if it was raised at the front. The list goes on! Anyone else? The answer to your question though... It's up to you. Have a play about with different things & see what you like.
I was working on the principal-commonly mentioned on this site-that having more speakers of the same size gives you more of the sound you want in terms of tone & speaker response times. I take your point about the lack of power. This is certainly true if you just used the Laney combo on it's own(I'm sure it was mentioned above that this would only put out 175 watts or thereabouts @ 8 ohms.). However, having 300 watts @ 4 ohms ,through a 6x10" would surely be pretty of poke.
The idea behind your thinking is fine. But the 2x10 is gonna get 150 watts spread over 2 drivers & the 4x10 is gonna get 150w spread across all 4. So if the cab sensitivity specs are the same, then the 2x10 is gonna be a bit louder than the 4x10. I plugged a 4x10 into my 2x10 combo a couple of nights ago & you couldn't tell if it was on or not. I unplugged the 2x10 to check & yes it was there & plenty loud enough on it's own, but sounded nowhere near as loud or good as the 2x10. The 4x10 is SWR, the combo is Markbass. The B&C drivers in the combo have a far greater xmax than those in the SWR.

Why not sell one of the cabs & get 2 the same?
+1 For the Hartke. Great amplifier! To be fair though, The Laney Richter amps will do a job for you too. Therefore, I'd make a couple of suggestions: (1) Get a Laney RB7 2x10" combo 2nd hand, then look for the newer Richter 4x10" cab, which has a new badge & a higher power handling rating(Some of which have already turned up on eBay.). This way, you have a decent rehearsal combo & a pretty decent live 6x10" stack. (2) Get the Hartke LH500 with ANY decent 2nd hand 8 ohm cab that can handle 400 watts.
The problem with having a 2x10 & a 4x10 together is that the 2x10 is gonna be getting the same juice from the amp as the 4x10. If looking at cabs, look for the sensitivity of the thing. Watts mean very little on their own.

Like Alstocko says, Voodoo. You can listen to the full album on YouTube. Musically, it sounds very similar to Prince.

From 3 mins on is like Gospel... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4XI6LXCsH8 I was gonna pop this in the Pino thread too, but forgot. Excellent bassline all round!

What about... Wait for it.... Another BDI21... But this time, replace the case, switch & pots with better quality ones. I might just do that myself.
-
I agree with Lozz. Also pop down to a decent bass shop & take your bass with you to try as many as you can. I went with Markbass too & if you want that "Valve" sound, there's plenty of pedals that can do that, Sansamp being the most popular, I like my Moog for a little warm drive.
Someone did once. And that's the last ever heard of him
Surely it's easier than playing Jazz on a Jazz in a Jazz?
This is a piece of history, a rare example of the first Bongo prototype.

That's racist, isn't it..?

No, not unless you say it twice ;-)
What if you play it in a Mazda campervan (the one with the pop up roof)?
I think you're all being too hard on it. This listing clearly says that it's in need of restoration, I'm sure that with new neck, body, hardware, electronics and strings you could have a seriously nice bass,
I think by "restoration", they mean cut a hole in the middle & put it back. Then plug it in & you have a B: Ass guitar (which slices your jobbies for easy flushing too!).

Made in Japan? Made from a kazi pan more like!
-
I'm not there yet, but working on it. One of the guitarists only learns the song at rehearsal. Never spends any time at home with his guitar (so a stereotypical guitard, I suppose) & despite wanting to play funk/soul/jazz, can't break out the rock mold. But we're working on it & hopefully either he'll change his musicianship or musicianship shall change him.
-
Isn't that what an overdrive on a low setting does? I have my Bass Murf set with a bt of drive & it gives a nice bit of grit to the sound. Not fuzz or distortion, but just that bit of "push".
-
A decent 2x10 would probably be more than adequate & you can add another 2x10 at a later date if you should need more. This might be worth a look? http://www.genzbenz.com/?fa=detail&mid=2862&sid=705&cid=95 Bass Direct have them for £319 However, if your budget can stretch, get one of these & then get a decent 2nd hand amp... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/214462-barefaced-midgetcompact-cabs-for-sale/
-
If they're decent cabs, then they should have the same (or similar) frequency range regardless of driver size. If the 15 has more bass than the 2x10/2x12 then I'd be looking for better 2x10/2x12s.

Which one of your 2 cabs do you prefer the sound of? I'd change it so you have 2 cabs the same. BTW, ignore the wattage, it's meaningless alone.
