1. I don't, though I used to have 2 Marshall cabs with a peavey amp (but it's probably nowt like your rig ).
2. Tighten up the machineheads. Mine have a screw in the top for this. I had one string going out of tune occasionally, tightened the head up & haven't had to touch it since.
My fretted single cut, is basically a Jazz body with the top horn filled in.
That is rather nice. Now, ifit was fretless & I had funds, I'd buy that!
4. Try rolling the bass off on the amp & increase the mid & treble if needed. Change your strings for rounds (or brighter flats such as D'Addario Chromes) if you need to.
5. It is an "either/or" connection, just make sure that the ohms don't exceed what your amp can handle.

I think they're like any instrument. Some are nice, some are superfugly. The Fender Jazz may have been a beautiful instrument as a single cut as the top cyst like horn it has is a hideous thing IMV (the rest of the instrument I do like).
7.
Just buy the boss me 50 b which some lovely bloke has for sale Basic, uncomplicated and fun
Bassist that I saw playing for David Phelps had a Sadowski into a ME50b to a Super Redhaed combo & had an excellent sound.
8. Well the Chromes are very bright, maybe a little too much, but I have a turny thing on my bass that changes the brightness to not so bright. They sounded fine in band rehearsal last night. Just not as much low end as the Tomastiks (I have a turny thing on my amp that fixed this though).
9. I'd suggest getting a decent multi fx pedal. This way you can learn which effects do what & if at a later date you want stomp boxes, you'll have a good idea of what you're after. Multi fx aren't so good at dirt effects such as overdrive or fuzz, but they're getting better & you could always add a separate dirt box if needed. Here's a link to a member's page that explains almost everything about effects. Start at part 1. It's a good & informative read. http://sheponbass.co.uk/blog/?category=Signal+Chain+BASSics Oh, & welcome to the good side.
10. New Moon give PLI with instrument insurance. So if each member has an instrument insured, then they get PLI.
11. Yes, I'm generalising the metal genre, so what? I started this for fun & that's the way it should be looked at. I like metal in all it's forms (well, most forms) & I wouldn't class rock bands such as U2 or Stereophonics as metal hence me not using the term "Rock". I also like a lot of pop music, EDM, drum n bass, Jazz, funk, soul & classical. I like to keep an open mind with music. Is that Wiki definition the definitive definition? I don't know. Sounds about right, but is it really? I don't think there was many knocking the genre either. Some gave their opinion of what they like, but if everyone liked the same stuff, what a boring place this would be (though I think we'll all agree on Clodplay ).
12.
You should try putting a funk band together, its taken bloody years to find people!
Haha! That actually gives me hope!!! I'm trying to get a band that plays either breakbeat, acid jazz or funk. So far I've got 3 rock guitarists (one on drums), but the singer is funk/soul.
13. Is the fan working on it?
14. I got Chromes today. Here.
15. I've just received my set of Chromes in the post. 1st thoughts - "Are these flats? They sound rather zingy". They do have a nice depth to them & Rolling the tone back soon makes them sound like proper strings. I suppose the brightness that they have should come in handy for a couple of tracks that have a little slap playing in them. I like them so far & the tension isn't much different from the TIs. I'll report back once I've tried them in the band.
16.
Interesting thread! I'd say yes, strictly speaking metal is pop music in that it's 'popular'. Very popular in fact. But it's not pop music in the way we tend to use the term pop - as in, meaning 'accessible' to a mass market / or 'daytime radio friendly'. Off topic: here's a great website listing the various genres of metal in the form of a map... http://mapofmetal.com/
Cool map. R1 & R2 do play a lot of stuff that's on that map. Last week I was rocking to some Motorhead on Radio 2! But I get what you mean as in what is classed as "pop". I think a song has to have a certain amount of "Cheesiness" to fall in todays "pop" category (& cheese isn't always a bad thing).
17.
So does that make One erection a metal band??
I thought Wand Erection was pornopop.
18. I ended up getting rid of my (borrowed) compressor.
19. I'd probably define Metal in the general sense as any music in the vein of Hard Rock, Grunge, Glam, NuMetal, Metalcore etc. So bands from Nirvana & Pearl Jam through to Slipknot & Wolfmother. Anything that has 2 or more guitars with a decent amount of dirt on them all. BTW, I do like most metal. It just seems like a very popular genre that's more popular than "Pop" (sub genres aside).
20. I was looking on Bandmix, Joinmyband & Gumtree for a keys player. I never found any, but just about everyone on there is playing Metal/Hard Rock of some sort, the majority are guitarists, a couple of drummers & vocalists. So it got me thinking, as "Pop music" is short for "Popular" music, is Metal the definitive Pop music?
21. Save your pennies & get a Moog MF-101.
22.
Great thread. Guess it depends how you play bass and what you are playing for. I'd only use effects at a very minimum to enhance a bass sound because essentially it plays the most basic important part in music that no other instrument really does, provide the low bass to fill the sound! That's what I love about the bass. The guitar is part of of many treble instruments that have a more noticeable range of tones for our ears so it makes sense to have more effects etc. I can see why you'd use a little effect, it can change the feel/sound in a subtle but important way, but you usually wouldn't want to do much more or it'll lose itself. I'm usually quite happy the way the bass sounds with tone adjustments on it's own. The only pedals I do use occasionally are compressors and short reverb.
Like you say, it depends on the music. Many traditional genres don't require effects on bass (country, folk, jazz, etc), but that doesn't mean they can't be incorporated to good use. Much of the other stuff like electronica, dubstep, breakbeat, funk & trip hop benefit greatly from effects & many couldn't be played how they are without any fx. I use quite a few effects in the majority of the songs I play.
23. 1/2 the fun of getting pedals is playing about with their order until you find what works best for you. I'd also consider adding a dirt pedal of some sort. Having octave, dirt & filter is a good starting point to produce some great synth like sounds. Though having a synth pedal too could be rather useful. Important part..... Have fun!
24. I've ordered a set of Chromes. the winning factor being that I should have them for Wednesday & they are £29 including postage. I'll let you know what I think of them on Thursday.
25. Source Audio BEF (the BEF Pro is dearer)?
