1. I've never been happy with my playing on this track. Playing it at a jam or a gig & it's been fine, but every time that I've recorded it, it's been one thing after another (from an itchy nose 1/2 way through, to just getting fat fingers).
2. In the mix that I did, I used a couple of duplicate drum patterns to do just what Dad asked. I didn't know about that what 51m0n has shown was possible. I had thought that something that could do it would be cool, but expected it to cost a bit. Cheers for that!
3. The GK is on page 3 of the amps & cabs for sale section (I just checked it was still there). Mudpup's looking for £225. There's also a TC BH250 for £180 on the same page. If you can push your budget, then there's a few Markbass amps on the first 3 pages for @ the £300 area.
4. There's a GK 2x12 going for sale on here that would do the job & is a very inexpensive cab. But the question is.... What's your budget? Are you looking to replace the combo too? I would, there's plenty of good inexpensive heads to be had too!
5. The drums was originally all mic'd up, but the guy recording us accidentally turned them all off & we only got the overheads & the kick. I've re recorded my bass for this one & there's 2 versions to choose from; a clean bass line & one with some funky wah. The "finished" version that I did also has quite a bit of editing & bits chopped out, but that was for a demo for getting gigs. Frigorifico are sadly no more. But they was fun for the 5-6 years they was together.
6. It depends really on what sort of music you play & what sort of sound you're after. It's a bit like asking "what sort of car should I get". My most useful pedal is the Moog Low Pass Filter. It's the only pedal that I rarely turn off & does so much for "just" a filter pedal.
7. Cheers guys, I'll go & have a listen just now.
8. Trying to get a couple of rock guitards to play something different (despite them saying "yes, we wanna try something new") & so far I'm having about as much luck as a homeless guy. So with that, can anyone suggest some good songs that have 2 guitars, keys, drums & bass that don't sound like guitar band songs (rock, indie, punk & so on)?
9. My day yesterday was an interesting one. Had the day off, so a little bass playing in the morning that I enjoyed, then band practice was in the evening from 8-11. We normally only have a 2 hr sesh, but the rooms was offering an extra hour for £1. I'd sent a couple of song ideas to the band for them to work on & had suggested we us some of the time to discuss things & work on writing a song (maybe a get a 2nd started too). I'd also suggested we play a couple of jam songs to get us warmed up, that was a bad idea! The one thing I asked for from the start when forming the band is that we're not a rock/indie band. I want to do something different & asked for musicians that also want to do something different. So lst night started with Come Together, which was ok. A bit rockier than usual. Then we did Crazy (the Gnarles Barkley version) & it sounded like a punk version. Then proceeded to play a handful of other songs & they all rocked (despite me trying to put as funky a bassline as I could). After an hour & a half if this crap one of the guitarists turns round & says "I don't think I can do this much longer, I might go home at 10:30". So I suggested we work on one of the song ideas that I'd sent. That went as well as a train crash! None of them knew the chords, the melody or the rhythm of the song & they just played standard rock versions of the chords with plenty of distortion on everything. We lasted 5 mins doing that & then it was back to playing melancholy guff. I'm gonna suggest we write the songs at home via web with one another & if that doesn't work, then I'm gonna leave the band that I've started. So my day as a bassist started good & turned crap. I wa really looking forward to getting writing too.
10. Alternatively, you could superglue some perspex to the top & bottom of the amp (once it's removed of course), allowing you to see the inside whilst you're playing (something to do whilst the guitarist is doing another solo).
11. I don't know that I was born a bassist, but I've been a musician since I was a kid. I'll play any instrument that I can get my hands on, so just now that's bass, guitar, ukulele, tin whistle, keys & also a spot of drumming tonight too! I'd probably say I'm more of a keys player who loves the low end & bought a bass.
12. The problem with all the guitar forums that I've been on is that they're overrun by either teenagers who think they know everything or guitar players who think that the amp needs to be on full tilt to get "their" sound. Hopefully Guitarchat resolves things. I personally think guitarchat is too long a name & should be cut down to guitchat.
13. Yesterday I had a little time to kill in Glasgow whilst waiting on the wife, so I headed to Guitar Guitar to see if they had any fretless bass' in for me to try & joy of joys, they had not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 lined fretless Jazzers & a fretless Stingray too. First bass I tried was the MIA Jazz & what can I say, such a beautiful instrument to play (I still don't like the top horn, but hey, not all basses are perfect). Had it going through an Ashdown ABM 500 combo (which I couldn't fault either). The bass had loads of beef in the low end on either pickup & it's made me want one! Might be some time before I can afford one though. It was just over £1200. Next up I tried the MIM Jazz. At almost £600 this was a very disappointing instrument. The second I held it I could feel the difference in quality. Not just a wee bit, but like the difference from a nice tailored suit to a bin bag. It didn't have any low end beef either, which was a further disappointment. Then I tried the Squire. This outshone the MIM by a long way. I'd be happy with this bass & all I'd need to do is stick a set of flatwounds on it & lower the action a bit. Very impressed considering it's a £300 bass. Then I tried the Creme de la creme, the Jaco Jazz. Even over the quality of the MIA, you can feel the difference. I like the thinner profile (almost as thin as my Ibby) & the notes just sung from this bass. Though I'm not sure I'd spend the extra £500 on this over the MIA. So my winner out of those 4 is the MIA. I'm now toying with the idea of selling all my pedals (& my wife) to get one.
14. For me it was: 1. Basslines. I played keys for quite a few years before & the guitar 1 year before picking up the bass & my favourite bit of a song is the bassline. 2. I could fire up my drum machine, have the sequencer play the keys & I could play bass along with it. 3. It's just so satisfying to play a good groove & get folk dancing.
15.
I went one year, can't remember which one. All I know is that Iron Maiden were on, possibly Skid Row (who I wasn't particularly interested in) and we drove round the campsite surfing on the roof of a hired transit van
I think that may have been the same year I went. Skid Row, Slayer & the Almighty played in '92.
16. I've got a SR1000. Bought it new in 1990 & it's been my main gigging bass since then. I've tried quite a few other basses & whereas there was a lot of good ones (including a rather nice Dingwall), the only benefit I could find would be to get either a 5 (or 6) string or get a fretless (or both). If I had spare funds, I'd get another 1000 & get one defretted.
17. My last band was an acoustic band. Singer played guitar or banjo, other was either mandolin, ukulele or whistle, drummer joined us occasionally & I played my electric ibby through some fx. I used my filter to get a pretty reasonable double bass sound & adding in some dirt during a part of a song can really get things going. Other option would be to get an EUB with the same scale as your bass.
18. I went in '92. IIRC, it was about £25 a ticket.
19. Just had time to sit & listen to all the tracks so far. Excellent stuff! Gonna try & get mine done on Monday (maybe sooner if the wife allows!).
20.
Funny how strings suit different people isn't it. I am 99% sure it was DR coated's that I tried a couple of years back in a LBGS deal, and absolutely hated
Very true. In my rock band days, zingy strings was the way for me & the DR's did it for me. Now I'm more of a funk/electro guy, flats get me the sound I'm after.
21. If you like zingy coated strings, try DR Strings. Though it seems roundwound strings have doubled in price since I switched to flatwound.
22. If you're gonna sound any good, you need to start by having some good quality skin on yer fingers!
23. I was doing a search to get amp/cab/combo advice. I was already a member of Talkbass & Uglybass but hardly visited them as they was both very Yankee & I wasn't much of a forumite. There's something about BC though that makes me want to stay & actually be a member.
24. Any excuse to show a P/J bass eh!
25. You could always get a sack trolley.
