Markbass cabs put out whatever you put in. You put a clean sound into them, they put out clean. You put a dirty sound into them, you get a dirty sound out. I get my dirt from my pedals. I have a slightly driven clean sound from the Bass Murf & add dirt with a distortion pedal. If I want the bass to sound like the bass does, I turn the pedals off. So if you want a gnarly sound, you need to get it with something other than the cab. IMO that is how it should be, but if you're liking your sound, just get another ABM 2x10 if you're needing more volume & lows.

All the best with it. I can't wait until my band are at gigging level.

Nice! If you're worried about watts, then if you have 2 8Ω cabs on your Fender Rumble it's putting out 350 watts at 4Ω. If you turn the amp to FULL whack, then each cab is going to get 175 watts each. As Mr Foxen once said, "My gran has a 2000 watt heater & it's not very loud". My advice is to use your ears. How does the cab you have sound? Do you like it or is it farting? If you like it & just need more of the same, get the same cab. If you don't like it, go & try some others. A 15" probably wouldn't help the bottom end any more than a decent 12". But again, try things out & see what you like.

Google translate says "What? Fifth this???". Well I suppose £300 is one fifth of £1500.
Interesting idea for the percussion. Where are you planning on finding a similar method for the hihat though?
[Arm slides & knocks cup off table]
Thump..... ( Bilbo's head hitting the desk)
Up all night writing? I'm gonna try something a little different for this one & I'm looking forward to hearing what y'all come up with.

Congratulations to the two of you. I never got a chance to listen to all the songs & cast a vote. I'm off to see what the new pics are.

I'd use the 4x10 for the lows & the 15 for the mids as the 15 should have a better dispersion & the 4x10 should be able to shift more low end. Going by the smiley eq, was you an 80s hifi fan?

You guys need to play more bass! Or maybe it's just the Peacock Blue ones. The G string would snap after @ 6 months (at the longest).

I used to like a bright zingy sound & DR Strings fit that bill, but they're short lived. Bought a set of TI flatwounds a couple of years ago & have no intention of changing them unless one breaks (& it'll get replaced with another TI). So the answer to your Q is that the string wind makes a huge difference to both longlivity & sound with flatwounds far outlasting roundwound strings but having much less zing (ok, no zing. But I'm a bassist, not a zinger ). I dare say the choice of metal does too, as according to what I've read on here, the TI flats are much brighter in sound than the La Bella's.

Starting a band from scratch. Long, sorry...

Here's what my first ad said...
Now forming a band & I'm looking for a Keys player, Drums, Guitar & Vocals & any other musicians that fit the Funk/Acid Jazz/Breakbeat genre. A bit about me... Started life as a keys player & learned several other instruments over the years. Took up bass some 20+ years ago & played lots of rock, blues & folk. Would like to do more jazz/electronica/drum n bass/breakbeat/house type stuff & I'm now looking to join or start a band. Vast range of influences & happy to play almost anything, whether it be jazz, funk, rock, blues, soul, house, reggae, drum n' bass, swing, electronica, folk or something else. Not so keen to play thrash, deathcore, country, indie or punk. Nothing wrong with those genres, just not what I'm looking to play. I do a fair amount of writing, but not much in the way of lyrics (the one thing I can't do is sing).
Several months on & I've got all but a keys player. But we're jamming & hopefully soon we'll start writing (I think I'm gonna be the only one writing, so it's a good job I can play the other instruments too). -

I don't think there's anything wrong with what you're asking other than not giving a genre. You're looking to play professionally, so asking for your ideals & seeing what comes back is the best way to go. You don't want some of the muppet "singers" that I've had apply. The sort whom's previous experience involves the shower & their only equipment is a hairbrush, moan about me not wanting to play what they want (despite the ad saying Acid Jazz & no Indie) & then having a voice no better than mine (& I sound crap). I would say that for the vocalist, if they can sing but don't have the equipment then they must be willing to buy a good mic. Just get them to send you a recording first before wasting your time. -
I get met with the same in my band & I'm the oldest. As we've just formed, we're starting with a couple of covers & then we'll do some writing. Everything the band has suggested has been from the 90s. So the 3 tracks we're playing with are Come Together (The Beatles), Crazy (Gnarles Barklay) & Too Close (Alex Clare). Oddly enough, all those was suggested by me.

Bunch of old farts! How about this for something more recent... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXx1CLAJ-OA I learned the bassline & it's actually quite fun for such a simple tune.
Some rare & interesting stuff here! The Pagelli semi-fretted thing is pretty intriguing...i'd love to know (or see photos) of the tuning mechanism for both that and the Ritter as they seem to share the 'headstock but no tuners' so I'd guess have tuning hardware recessed into the rear of the body???
The Ritters use the same method as a headless bass would. This one you can see the tuners on the body... This one shows how they sit in the back...

This chap's improved the Jazz bass' top horn & it makes a very nice instrument. However, this ticks all my boxes visually... Though I still don't think it's the most beautiful bass there is.

Ignore the wattage of the amps & try them out yourself to see how loud they go. Watts tells you not how loud it goes, just how hot it can make a cone's coil. I used to have an old Trace Elliot GP7 4x10 combo which sounded good in the house, but on stage it was useless. Farted if you wanted any bass at any volume. I'd happily gig my 30w Vox combo over it. Maybe TE used guitar drivers in the 4x10s & that's why they led folk to believe you need a 15" for bass?

Dr Dave makes a good point! I canny sing to save myself, but I do learn the lyrics & the chords so I know how the song goes.

Help, can't find a jazz band! (Scene is really dry, any ideas?)
xgsjx replied to SevenSeas's topic in General Discussion
It can be a challenge just finding local musicians that play something that isn't metal or indie. Best places to try are Joinmyband.co.uk, Bandmix.co.uk & Gumtree. I was searching for ages for Acid Jazz/Breakbeat musicians. I've ended up with a metal guitarist & another guitarist who's taken up drums (& is now the drummer), a house DJ to play decks & sing & another guitarist to share the vocal duties & play some keys. Man, it's hard work. But I'm sending them facebook messages with youtube videos for stuff like Incognito, Miloopa, Jamiroquai, Groove Armada & so on to get them listening to what they've offered to play (what we end up with may well be completely different, but it'll be fun). So you might have to find a couple of musicians who aren't Jazzcats & teach them what they're missing. Maybe check with some of your existing band members & see if any are interested in the Jazz side. Drummers usually are (let them hear some JoJo Mayer & see how things go). Good luck with it. -
Neither. It's not really worth telling the truth in good ol blighty is it. It reminds me of school when anyone good at something would be rounded on and called a show off or a swot or summat.
I was only messin. Ya Summat!
I'm not entirely sure. It's fugly indeed, but within its realm does seem to have some style. The one below lacks even that, and the child-like decoration makes it even worse, imho. best, bert
The body does have a classical instrument shape to it. But then it looks like it went wrong somewhere.
