Help me choose a light powerful combo (or cab?) - update: MarkBass CMD121
xgsjx replied to mcnach's topic in Amps and Cabs
The CMD102 (the 2x10 combo) isn't the smallest of things, it's about the same size as a standard 2x10 cab with front ports. But it doesn't weigh much (can be carried with one hand), has a tilt back option if you use it horizontally & has plenty of loudness (& sounds quality too). So it might be bigger than one of your current 2x10 cabs. I think something like the 121 that Lozz has may suit you better though. -
I had doubts too. Bought it & haven't had any since. Here's my review from 2009... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/36164-moogerfooger-mf-105b-mf-101/ & like's been said, get at least 1 exp pedal (& maybe even a short TRS lead to make it control things with the envelope follower).

Get a keyboard/synth.
Main reason is the guitarist has been playing guitar for 30 year and still cant play it
Maybe then he's really a keys player?

I've been to a couple of weddings taht used the same band. A 4 piece (Drums, Bass, guitar & vocals) & everything apart from the vocals was a backing track (probably Karaoke tracks). They put on a good show for those who don't know anything about playing music, but to watch the rest of the band mime from a musician's POV was a bit of a "Oh dear, why not get a DJ" moment (though they did play like they was playing the song).
-
Why not get one of the guitarists to play the keys part on the iPad, maybe even using one of these...

That is a very tasty looking rig! I've been gassing for the 102HF to go with my combo for a few years now (even though I dont need it).
-
& for popping it on Facebook. I've done the sharey thing with it.

I've finally gotten started on the mix. To start with I thought "what a lot of tracks!", but once I read the stuff above it all made sense. I've approached it like we do playing live as a band. Started with the drums, then get the bass to fit in, then rhythm guitars, lead vocal & then lead instruments (violins & 3rd guitar). Next I'm doing the other instruments, then the backing vocals, then have a listen & tweak as necessary. I don't expect a great mix as I'm deaf (so it might have rather loud or sparkly hi hats), but i'm having fun with it. I like the song, reminds me of a Steve Earle song.
So it doesn't affect the sound coming out of the big cone, having all that business in front of it, I assume?
Other than adding the higher frequencies that the tweeter provides, no. Not as far as I am aware.
-
So it sits in front of the other cone? Sorry, mostly a guitarist so tweeters are bizzarre, alien technology to me.
It does indeed. Not all bass cabs have the tweeter in this position. Most have the tweeter above the driver, but I think Alex puts the tweeter in that position on the Midget as the cab is already designed to get the best from the driver (so making the cab bigger to fit the tweeter in is going to make it sound different from the other with no tweeter). I believe most of the other BFB cabs have the tweeter in a top corner of the cab.
Forgive my ignorance, but what's going on with that stuff running down the middle of the top cab?
It's the tweeter.

Good to hear you're getting back to gigging, you might even get your carrots back!
Noooo! Not "In God's Country"! That's Real Gunslinger Virtuoso stuff !!! Seriously though, I'm really not looking down on this. In fact, U2's basslines were one of the inspirations that made me pick up the bass. I had this idea that simply being in a position to play stuff like that was enough for the whole project to be worthwhile, as I love the U2 bass so much. best, bert
Funny enough, it was mostly U2 songs that I started with too. I probably know how to play every song off the first 5 albums & then some of the others!
I Will Follow
Keep practicing & you can then move on to "In God's Country".

From what I've seen, she pulls faces whenever she's playing bass. It wasn't just a "Jules is giving me the boak" moment. Good band though. My wife let me hear Falling a few weeks ago, brilliant song.
Been feeling a bit of a dry spell with finding new challenging bass lines that are difficult but achievable. Thought I'd try some daft punk. Outside of my usual comfort zone stylistically but thought what the hell. Bloody hell this is a culture shock
Snap! I learned the bassline to Get Lucky & then thought "I've always wanted to learn Around The World". It's a lot trickier than I expected. Especially the 3rd part that uses E C & B (which looks a piece of peepee on paper). Voyager is another cracking song to learn & again will amaze you how tricky it actually is.
I read in recipe book once about "potato scones" and just thought "What a load of pretentious bollocks" It's the poor mans food. You get 8 slices for £1! Calling it a scone is a bit like calling dairy-lea a fine cheese. I've never had Abernathy biscuits before. Are they buttery and biscuity and bassy?
Tattie scone is one of those things you have to eat to know what it's like. It goes particularly well with Lorne sausage in a roll. Abernethy biscuits are probably the tastiest buttery biscuits I've had. Perfect for bass.
It's not a loaf, they're usually flat and square, but not from a loaf. And Northern Ireland...
A bit like a tattie scone then? Oh, & it's gotta be Abernethy biscuits for base.

I'm not a Ric fan either, but that is rather stunning. I'm pretty sure if you was to sell it on here, you probably wouldn't take much of a loss on it. Especially given how much use it's had.

Switch to the TC Electronic style rig from large Ashdown all Valve rig
I've recently converted to an RH450 from a 500w Warwick Tubepath and couldn't be happier. I use it in a couple of covers bands, one doing more classic rock(Sabbath, zeppelin etc) and the other doing a more varied mix like Duran Duran, RHCP and it sounds great. The presets are handy, as are the on-board compressor, tubetone and tuner, which have enabled me to ditch rack tuner and drive/comp pedals. It's great having head, speaker cables, foot switch and instrument cable in one little bag, I have a cab permanently at our rehearsal space so I just grab the bag, one bass and I'm off, no heavy rack or extra lead bags to carry. I'm not fully lightweight yet as still using my Warwick 411 cab, but hopefully the RH450 will soon be paired with a Barefaced S15, for a complete one trip monster rig, cab in one hand, bass in other, TC bag over shoulder. As has been said though, there are a few people here who have owned and disliked the TC so if possible trying one out (preferably alongside some other class D heads) would be beneficial.
Now if you get wheels on the back edge of the cab & a clip on the top, you could tilt the cab back, attach the clip to your belt & that's you a full one trip wonder! -
300 TCEW's (TC Electronic watts ) The TC stuff is good, I just moved on because I fancied a change.. which reminds me I still need to take photos of my amp The cabs are good too, not Berg good but still very good.
I've heard a lot of good reports about the TC stuff. Wouldn't mind trying one sometime. -
A lot of you guys are lucky. Ampeg, Markbass & so on in the rehearsal rooms! None of the rooms that I've used so far have anything that can handle any bass below a dropped D on a guitar. In my previous band, we used to regularly use a room that had a Carlsberg Bass Bomber, which I used for the first couple of months & then I took my own gear,. But over a short time, the other bands abused it & after 6 months it no longer worked. The rest of the band always took their own kit from the off. The rooms my new band have been using have all been new to us & none of us knew what was going to be there. I was the only one to take my combo & was glad that I did. The guitarist keeps complaining about the kit that's been in each of the rooms we've used so far. The last place he spent 1/2 an hour trying to get a decent sound (as in not buzzing). He has a 1x12 combo too that he bought not long ago. How hard can it be to chuck it in the back of the car?
Well sort of... I had an ABM500 1x15 combo and 1x15 cab, and switched to a TC Classic 450 and Barefaced Midget and Compact. No regrets. The Classic is a dumbed-down version of the RH 450 (no memories, no tuner, fixed EQ frequencies). It's plenty loud, so the 750 should be er... 300 louder.
300 What? -
Couldn't agree more with the detuning of guitars. At the rehearsal rooms, one guy said to the guitarist "they've got a nice marshall 4x12 rig in there, has loads of bass". I said "Why don't you just take up bass & be done with it".
