Switch to the TC Electronic style rig from large Ashdown all Valve rig
xgsjx replied to CPBass's topic in Amps and Cabs
300 TCEW's (TC Electronic watts ) The TC stuff is good, I just moved on because I fancied a change.. which reminds me I still need to take photos of my amp The cabs are good too, not Berg good but still very good.
I've heard a lot of good reports about the TC stuff. Wouldn't mind trying one sometime. -
A lot of you guys are lucky. Ampeg, Markbass & so on in the rehearsal rooms! None of the rooms that I've used so far have anything that can handle any bass below a dropped D on a guitar. In my previous band, we used to regularly use a room that had a Carlsberg Bass Bomber, which I used for the first couple of months & then I took my own gear,. But over a short time, the other bands abused it & after 6 months it no longer worked. The rest of the band always took their own kit from the off. The rooms my new band have been using have all been new to us & none of us knew what was going to be there. I was the only one to take my combo & was glad that I did. The guitarist keeps complaining about the kit that's been in each of the rooms we've used so far. The last place he spent 1/2 an hour trying to get a decent sound (as in not buzzing). He has a 1x12 combo too that he bought not long ago. How hard can it be to chuck it in the back of the car?
Well sort of... I had an ABM500 1x15 combo and 1x15 cab, and switched to a TC Classic 450 and Barefaced Midget and Compact. No regrets. The Classic is a dumbed-down version of the RH 450 (no memories, no tuner, fixed EQ frequencies). It's plenty loud, so the 750 should be er... 300 louder.
300 What? -
Couldn't agree more with the detuning of guitars. At the rehearsal rooms, one guy said to the guitarist "they've got a nice marshall 4x12 rig in there, has loads of bass". I said "Why don't you just take up bass & be done with it".

Most of the metal that I used to listen to would have sounded rather empty without any bass. Imagine what Motorhead's Ace Of Spades would sound like without that (or any) bassline. Would anyone have wanted to listen to it?

Most multi fx units seem let down on the dirt fx. As well as the ones mentioned, I've heard good things about the Line 6 M9 & M13 & the Boss ME-50b is a good easy to use pedal.

I'd get to a shop & try some rigs out. Don't assume that 10s have less depth & more punch/top than 12s or 15s. If I was getting another rig, I'd go with either a good 2x12 or a couple of 2x10s stacked vertically. Just now I only need a 2x10 combo as I don't play that big a venues. The above suggestions are all good. I'd also take a look at Barefaced Cabs. As for amps, there's a great selection of lightweight things from the likes of GK, Genz Benz MarkBass, TC & a few others. Have fun on your search.

I played quite a bit of Americana (which is very similar to bluegrass) & most of it is Root - 5th, but there's plenty of scope for variation. If you know blues, it helps a lot. A lot of it has the same type chord sequences & you can use the blues R 3 4 5 type runs & you can even get away with some more complex stuff & some fills at the end of verses. I miss playing it actually. Here's some bad recordings of my old band...
Nice one Graeme! This sounds like it came straight from my record collection Very 808 State in the beginning (I think that birdcall sample is actually a species called the 'Great Northern Loon' - bit of ornithological, acid house trivia for ya there). The synth baseline has a sort of Mr Oizo "Flat beat" vibe to it, which I really like. I also dig the bangin' minimalism and the rave-style stabs. In fact, it reminds me a lot of the sort of music I used to party to during the 90s, so it gets a big thumbs up from me. By the sound of it we may have had a similarly misspent youth?!
Cheers Paul. I was tempted to put some crowd samples in there, but it reminded me of when TTF took the mick out of Ultrasonic (1,2,1,2, where's that crowd sample). I never thought about Flatbeat, but I hear it now. That's another song from my collection too (back in my DJing days). You're spot on with the Loon. It was a heavily used sample in the early 1/2 of the 90s.

Here's mine. I wanted to do more & even have some lyrics, but no time to do much else. I'm gonna go listen to the others now. https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/the-love-bug

Where did the sex or gigging thread go?

Ahh, but which cruise is best for metal? I'd say Costa Concordia for rock.

My amp doesn't give me my sound. My pedals & my bass does that, so as ling as the amp can put out a clean signal & doesn't fart, then I'm fine with that. However, the rooms that we've been going to have all been different (just whatever one we can get to fit our times), so I usually have no idea what's in there. The guitarist used the drive channel on all the occasions so far & each did sound very different. That's something I can't see the point of. The studio we're going to is a little cramped for 5 people & I've found out that the room has a Fender Bassman head & an "unknown" cab (I phoned the studio to ask) so I'll probably use that. My combo's a 1 hand lift, so I'll chuck it in the back of the car & if the cab they have is a farter, then I can use mine. We always book for a min of 2 hours & there's ample parking at all the rooms (whether here or Dundee).

Will you be having sex at your gig? -
I never understood why people say this. It takes a minute. If you haven't done it, why comment?
I was at work when I made the comment. I can't listen to anything there. I made a joking remark & then that comment is self explanatory. Had I left the comments out, it could have been assumed that I was being nasty, which I was not. I will listen to the track either today or tomorrow. I'd like to just now, but I can't.

That's a good point. Also, if you're in a newly formed band & haven't played with any of the other musicians, having a good sound to start with makes you want to play. Whereas if 1/2 the band sound crap, regardless of playing abilities, things aren't going to be too inspiring & things might not last long.
It would drive me nuts if a guitarist, or the bassist or whoever, was all prima donna and moaning 'I can't get my sound'. I'd be right pissed off having my time wasted.
Fully agree there. I don't mind using the room's rig if it's reasonable, but if you're going to somewhere you haven't been before, wouldn't you have something in the car, just in case? I get my sound with my bass & my pedals. But if I plugged into something like the Line 6 they had at the last room we were in, I wouldn't hold any hope of getting a 1/2 decent sound & having dodgy jacks on gear that's probably been abused by every teenager that's went in there wouldn't help either.
-
I would have thought that if the guitarist has a rig sitting at home, uses whatever is provided in rehearsal & then fetches out his own rig for a gig & the guitar sounds completely different through it, then where's the logic? I've seen bands that could play, but sounded guff as they hadn't spent any time with the gear that they used at the gig (one was actually quite a good blues band). My band isn't a rock band, more down the lines of acid jazz & I think having a good sound to the groove will get folk dancing more than playing with a poor sound.
-
Occasionally I've used the room's rig, but most often I take my combo as too often I find the lump there is only good for making sounds similar to farting in a didgeridoo. The last place I was in had a Line 6 thing with dodgy sockets, the place before that has either some old Peavey thing or a worn out Hartke (that looks like it's been good in the 80s, but needs to retire) plugged into an SWR 4x10 with the drivers removed & a 15" driver bolted to the back of the board they was on & the place we're going next looks like it has a Peavey TNT (woooohooo!!!!). I can understand the singer & keys/turntablist using the PA that's in there &maybe even the drummer using the basics of the kit, but why would the rest of the band want to use the stuff if their own gear is better (other than lazyitis)? My band's just formed & the drummer's just bought a new kit. The guitarist said "you're not taking the whole kit are you", to which me & the drummer replied "why not, it needs tuned up". Then he asked if I can leave my combo behind & just use the rig that's in there. My reply was "I'll ask what they have, but if it's the TNT, then No". Maybe I should ask him to bring his rig? He hasn't so far & wasn't happy with the rig in the last room. Fair enough we're just getting together & only had a couple of sesh's together, but isn't getting your sound right just as important as getting the song right? So when you go to rehearsal/practice/jam, do you use what's there or do you take your own amp/cab/combo?
-
If the BH 500 can handle it, you should get another 2x12 & take all 3. Me, I would just take 2 like Lozz says in his 1st post.
-
Nah, load of rubbish. Give it up mate! Only kidding, I've not listened to it yet. But I will.
-
I thought it was just me! In all my bands I seem to be the one who gets everyone together, organises rehearsals & gigs etc, makes adverts, flyers & logos, writes the songs (apart from most of the lyrics, but I tend to write the melody for them).
Why's that then? I can stacks them???
Experiment & try stacking them, but I would think having 2 different sounding combos with different sized drivers stacked might present tonal issues. Though you could have them both set up completely different from one another, with one handling the lows & the other the mids & up (though this also might take a bit of setting up too). Having one each side of the stage would give you a broader range across the audience. Each side would most likely get a different sound to the other but if you want to play with stereo, you could have fun.
-
Stereo FTW. One combo each side of the stage. I probably wouldn't put the 2 combos near each other.
