1. Will you be having sex at your gig?
2.
I never understood why people say this. It takes a minute. If you haven't done it, why comment?
I was at work when I made the comment. I can't listen to anything there. I made a joking remark & then that comment is self explanatory. Had I left the comments out, it could have been assumed that I was being nasty, which I was not. I will listen to the track either today or tomorrow. I'd like to just now, but I can't.
3. That's a good point. Also, if you're in a newly formed band & haven't played with any of the other musicians, having a good sound to start with makes you want to play. Whereas if 1/2 the band sound crap, regardless of playing abilities, things aren't going to be too inspiring & things might not last long.
4.
It would drive me nuts if a guitarist, or the bassist or whoever, was all prima donna and moaning 'I can't get my sound'. I'd be right pissed off having my time wasted.
Fully agree there. I don't mind using the room's rig if it's reasonable, but if you're going to somewhere you haven't been before, wouldn't you have something in the car, just in case? I get my sound with my bass & my pedals. But if I plugged into something like the Line 6 they had at the last room we were in, I wouldn't hold any hope of getting a 1/2 decent sound & having dodgy jacks on gear that's probably been abused by every teenager that's went in there wouldn't help either.
5. I would have thought that if the guitarist has a rig sitting at home, uses whatever is provided in rehearsal & then fetches out his own rig for a gig & the guitar sounds completely different through it, then where's the logic? I've seen bands that could play, but sounded guff as they hadn't spent any time with the gear that they used at the gig (one was actually quite a good blues band). My band isn't a rock band, more down the lines of acid jazz & I think having a good sound to the groove will get folk dancing more than playing with a poor sound.
6. Occasionally I've used the room's rig, but most often I take my combo as too often I find the lump there is only good for making sounds similar to farting in a didgeridoo. The last place I was in had a Line 6 thing with dodgy sockets, the place before that has either some old Peavey thing or a worn out Hartke (that looks like it's been good in the 80s, but needs to retire) plugged into an SWR 4x10 with the drivers removed & a 15" driver bolted to the back of the board they was on & the place we're going next looks like it has a Peavey TNT (woooohooo!!!!). I can understand the singer & keys/turntablist using the PA that's in there &maybe even the drummer using the basics of the kit, but why would the rest of the band want to use the stuff if their own gear is better (other than lazyitis)? My band's just formed & the drummer's just bought a new kit. The guitarist said "you're not taking the whole kit are you", to which me & the drummer replied "why not, it needs tuned up". Then he asked if I can leave my combo behind & just use the rig that's in there. My reply was "I'll ask what they have, but if it's the TNT, then No". Maybe I should ask him to bring his rig? He hasn't so far & wasn't happy with the rig in the last room. Fair enough we're just getting together & only had a couple of sesh's together, but isn't getting your sound right just as important as getting the song right? So when you go to rehearsal/practice/jam, do you use what's there or do you take your own amp/cab/combo?
7. If the BH 500 can handle it, you should get another 2x12 & take all 3. Me, I would just take 2 like Lozz says in his 1st post.
8. Nah, load of rubbish. Give it up mate! Only kidding, I've not listened to it yet. But I will.
9. I thought it was just me! In all my bands I seem to be the one who gets everyone together, organises rehearsals & gigs etc, makes adverts, flyers & logos, writes the songs (apart from most of the lyrics, but I tend to write the melody for them).
10.
Why's that then? I can stacks them???
Experiment & try stacking them, but I would think having 2 different sounding combos with different sized drivers stacked might present tonal issues. Though you could have them both set up completely different from one another, with one handling the lows & the other the mids & up (though this also might take a bit of setting up too). Having one each side of the stage would give you a broader range across the audience. Each side would most likely get a different sound to the other but if you want to play with stereo, you could have fun.
11. Stereo FTW. One combo each side of the stage. I probably wouldn't put the 2 combos near each other.
12. I'd go for the GK rig too. Was gonna go for a GK 700RB myself, but ended up with Markbass.
13. For increaseing your speed, turn the volume up slightly & play with a lighter touch. It takes a little getting used to, but as you're not having to touch the strings as hard, it gives you that little extra maneuverability.
14. I've been listening to the single for the past couple of weeks on youtube. Love Daft Punk's stuff & can't wait to get it.
15. How about Primate Jazzmate
16. I think for a duet, key or bass with vocals sounds better than guitar & vocals. I used to play some stuff with just a singer, most with guitar & some with bass. Hated the monotony of strumming chords & doing something more complex wouldn't always work with the vocals, but bass just sounded soo sweet & much more fun (even just playing roots & harmonies).
17. Isn't that where a synth's velocity, aftertouch, pitch bend & Mod wheel/stick come into play? & then you have all the parameters that you can play about with in real time. I do still prefer playing bass in a band situ though & I don't think there's a good forum for any other instruments (not that I've found).
18.
Dooooo iiiiiiit... the white edition of course!
If this band doesn't work out, I will certainly be looking at keys. It would mean selling all my bass gear though.
19.
Love playing synth and I too love the idea of playing an awesome voyager synth exclusively, but I find the sound of synths far too grating on my ears (even though I love the sound) when playing them in isolation for long periods of time.
I know what you mean, I get it from playing my guitar for more than an hour & hate playing cheap sounding keys (especially most home keyboards). If I did go down the keys route, it would need to have a really good palette with some good EPs & pads (hence my choices ). Enough!!! You've got me considering it again!
20. If I was able to include having a band, then bass all the way. If it's just me & no band, then keys. Preferably a moog voyager, korg kronos or nord stage, but I doubt I'd have the funds. So maybe a korg m3 (yes, I'd been considering it when I was bandless & might still if the band's a no goer). I play guitar, I wouldn't choose it over the majority of other instruments as everyone who wants to play an instrument plays guitar & it all gets too samey. Wish I could sing though.
21.
I tried a TC RH 250 in the shop when I bought the PF350 and noticed it seemed to be a lot louder. Both were going through an 8ohm cab.
'tis why you need to try. The RH 450 puts out about 150w at 8Ω, but it's loud. My LMII puts @ 350w at 8Ω & it's loud too. If you're liking the Fender sound, try one out. It might just be the answer. I'm liking the sound of that P bass, just don't dig the looks at all.
22. Have you tried the OC2 on it's own (as in it being the only thing between the bass & amp)? My other thought is the "drive" on the moog could be too high (it works even in bypass).
23. You'd need to try one, but don't get caught up in the wattage of an amp as it means little on it's own. There's a few folk on here who seem happy enough with the older LM250 & the TC RH amps which are about the same in wattage. Ask GAK if you can try the LM250 & if you can return it if it doesn't suit.
24. i've never used a Fender head. Try a few different one's, but I'm with Lozz on the Markbass heads though.
25. I'd assumed you had. Still worth asking them how they can help & if not, ask them to ask Ampeg if they would be willing to help. It'll be interesting to see how the customer service side of these 2 companies are? I'm hoping they're both good.
