1. I'd go & try some rigs out. I'd also not worry about the fx loop & just put the B3 between the bass & the amp. I really umm'd & ahh'd about separates & ended up with a MarkBass 2x10 combo. Here's a couple of things to add to your list... Markbass LMII/III, etc (or even one of their combos) Genz Benz Aguilar & Barefaced for a cab (though this might take most of your budget, even s/h) Have fun searching. I did.
2. In a previous job, a "Health & Safety advisor" told me that I need to wear a lanyard if I'm climbing above 2 meters. I was going up about 3 meters so I put my pass on.
3.
Just wondering if there were any other discriminatory qualifications. Atheist bassists, abstain, whatever their morals..? Hindu, or Sikh..? Seemed odd to me, that's all...
Ah, I see. I don't think he'd mind, as long as they follow Jesus. I don't see how it's any different from asking for a female bassist or a bassist that's willing to travel. All the best with it Neil, there's a good few Christian bassists on here. Though I would consider non Christians too as they're good for a debate in the band (though getting one to play All Day might be a ).
4. I've almost got a band formed. Just need a keys player to complete the line up. Got me on bass, a guitarist, a drummer & a vocalist/turntablist. Style of music is a mix of Acid Jazz, Funk, House, Breakbeat, Soul & anything else that has a groove & makes you move. PM me or leave a reply if you're interested.
5. +1 to getting things out of the FX loop. It's not usually a good enough signal for your tracking effects. If that fails, get a EHX BMS or Markbass SS & put it before it & then put the SYB3 into bypass mode. That should cure it.
6. I've got a Markbass combo & it pretty much puts out what I put in. So if I'm playing clean, I get clean. Turn on the dirt & that's what comes out (in a good way of course). If you're not in a hurry, once my band's up & running you're welcome to try it out.
7. My last band was me & the singer as a writing team. I always left the lyrics to him as he could listen to a melody & get the words to fit so the syllables & vowels fell into place (if you know what I mean). Writing could take a number of routes. Sometimes he'd have a chord progression & a basic melody, sometimes some lyrics. Sometimes I'd take a bassline or chord progrssion, sometimes I'd have an entire song less the lyrics. When we first met, I had a bassline that I couldn't fit anything, played it to him & he had lyrics that he'd written with the same issue, they fitted perfectly & the drums & guitar just fell into place. Now I'm working on writing lyrics as I don't have him to write anymore & in my new band, I'm the only one who knows how to write lyrics (& not by any means great either).
8. You need to be careful with funk these days. What was a compliment in the 70s could insult someone now. E.G "Hey baby, you smell funky".
9. SpaceChick just hit the nail on the head. If you can play to a decent level & decide to switch genres, then if you're playing/practicing regularly there's no reason why you couldn't excel. Not enough people combine alternating genres by the sound of things.
10. One of my fave bassists (whom I took a lot of influence from in my teens) has a tone that I don't like... Billy Sheehan
11. I wouldn't worry, it's a drum academy. The audience will be too busy fighting over the Duplo to notice what you're playing! I saw him back in the late 80s playing at the SECC with DLR, Vai & Sheehan. Awesome gig. Another pointless bit of info, Matt used to play the same bass as me (Ibby SR 1000). Looks like he's now a MM player.
12. Camel Toe Chasers I think trying to find a good band name can be one of the hardest parts of forming a band (I've been scratching my head for a good few mumphs now).
13. I'll try & download the stems. Last month I couldn't, but I didn't have time to do anything as it was. My last band did some Americana, so this might just help me go completely loopy.
14. Have you tried plugging the bass/guitar straight into your mac? You might get a surprise.
15. I have a mono 1/4 jack wired to one side of a stereo 3.5mm jack. The 1/4 jack plugs into the FX send & the 3.5 is plugged into the line in on my iMac. I then just choose "mono channel 1" on the input choice in GB & make sure that I get a good signal that doesn't clip by adjusting the amp's input gain & GB's input level to suit. The master volume on the amp has no effect on the fx send, so I can turn that to wherever I want. It also has a better sound quality than the Alesis interface that I used to use.
16.
Is there an equivalent list for guitarists?
That one just says "if you noodle, turn up too loud or bring a guitar - disqualified".
17. I completely missed this thread or I could have offered some stems from one of my old bands. If you need them for a future comp, I'll hapily put them on a webthing.
18. I thought I was gonna make a small fortune... I read it the wrong way round. Maybe not getting that fretless 6er after all.
19. I think writing down full details of electronic music or how multiple fx on an instrument are used can be tricky (if not uber complicated) regardless of what method is used & I certainly have a few tracks that I wouldn't even contemplate the transcribing of anything other than maybe the notes. I do read tab & find pop chord charts handy for onstage (usually just in church). But I never use any written notation at a gig, all from memory. If I can't remember the song, I'm not ready to play it live. Have you considered braille?
20.
Our guitarist rocks a Marshall DSL40C 1X12 valve combo, live and for rehearsal. It's 40W, but - it can be run at 20W - it's still well loud enough, but sounds great. Why some guitarists still feel the need to use a 100W half-stack is beyond me! Over course, bass players need bigger rigs as low frequency sounds need more power to be heard... or something.
In my last rock band the guitarist had a Vox AC30, but often pulled out his AC15 for rehearsals & smaller gigs. He still got pretty loud at times, but it was never overpowering. His main problem was noodling.
21. The singer owns a sweetie shop & I was tempted to get a couple of candy floss sticks to give to the drummer. I was talking to the drummer yesterday & he was saying that he couldn't hear the vocals at all, just drums, bass & guitar (mainly). I'm looking forward to trying out this other room. It looks like they've actually thought about what's needed for rehearsal.
22. I'd try another set of strings first, then if it's not them, replace the machineheads. If that doesn't work, replace the bass.
23. I'm 42, work shifts & just starting an acid jazz band. There's folk on here that's in their 50s & 60s that was new to bass & then joined a band without expecting it. It might just be you & a guitar playing friend & a singer, it might be a full band that just meet up for fun. I practice at home with a 500w combo (good fun when the neebs are away on holiday) & i've gigged with a 30w combo. My advice is try some combos out & pick the one that you like.
24.
Well that told me!
Sorry. Never meant to be cheeky. That "Bass Clef" game that keeps popping up on here is a good way to learn where the notes are & everything else about writing score isn't hard. I learned mainly from manuscripts as they usually have everything written either in the front or back page (I started out a keys player).
