How do you 'notate' or write down your basslines?
xgsjx replied to Spoombung's topic in General Discussion
Learn to read music. It's not hard & you could fit all that on 1/10th of what you have there. It's the difference between writing a sentence or drawing pictures of what you're trying to say. Most of my rough ideas I record on my phone/mac. Songs are by memory. Meant to say, cool tune. -
The OC-3 was not bad at all, it's just that I preferred the OC-2. I would not call the OC-3 thin either, but it was a different sound, and it was good, for sure! The filter section is covered already with a Soundblox BEF Pro. I love this thing I also have a Bassballs modified to have the internal trimpots accessible with standard outside knobs, and it can produce some cool sounds, but I'm not sure I need to clutter the pedalboard with it. Then there is the EHX microsynth. I really like it, but it seems a bit too bulky for a sound I will use only rarely, so I might not keep it long. Yup, an octave, an overdrive and and envelope filter (with presets!) and that's me sorted I think
I'd like an HH3 to plug into my filter. Maybe one day.

You make me envious! I'd love to A/B the OC2 & OC3. I bought an OC3 off Shep about a year & a bit ago (he was replacing it with another OC2). I've heard that a few folk think the OC3 is a bit thin, but used through a couple of filters, dirt & chorus, I'd call it anything but thin. For your funk band, I'd definitely suggest getting a filter to go after the octave & dirt.

I used to have 2 Marshall 15" cabs back in the late 80s & early 90s (can't rememember which model, but they were Celestion loaded). They was ok, but my Markbass 2x10 is far superior.
-
You've done your bit. Sit back & watch what happens. If they get a gig, go to it (it could make a great post on here). I know someone who advertised their cupcake business with pics of someone elses cakes for about a year. Folk saw her cakes & she now only has pics of her cakes (& she did improve). She used pics off of the web as she didn't have any good pics of her cakes (& no, it wasn't my wife ).

We're going to a different studio for the next rehearsal. It has 2 1x12 guitar combos on stands (a Marshall & a Line6), so should let the guitarist hear himself better.

Classic rock songs that would suit a female vocalist
xgsjx replied to SpaceChick's topic in General Discussion
My first thought was anything by Heart. "Animals" is a good album to have a listen to. There's also Kim Wilde, Joan Jett or Suzi Quatro. They all have a lot of good rock songs. If I had a female singer, I'd definitely be doing a Lana Del Rey song. Could easily be rocked up. -
Some good ideas there (apart from the rude words, of course. A mallet should suffice). I think plugs shall be ordered soon.

One laugh that I got... We was going over Crazy & dropped it to Gm to suit the singer (AKA hit the high notes) & the guitarist said "I think we're gonna have to try & choose songs that fit his range", to which I replied "Or we could just go straight onto writing songs & then there's no problem". The guitarist then replied with "changing the key of a song is one thing, but writing a new song from scratch? I don't know about that", To which I laughed & said "Well we ARE an Originals band". I was talking to the singer today & he said "I'm trying to think of songs", I said "I can write all the songs if needs be" & he replied with "but if we play songs folk know, they'll get up & dance, whereas if we play songs they don't know we might not get any gigs". I said "well I've been playing originals for years & never had any issues with getting gigs or folk not dancing, we usually get invited back". I think the guitarist has only ever played covers & the singer has always been a DJ (apparently he plays a lot on the snowboarding circuit).

Nice one. You get the rig you need with the sound you want & still get some money back!
Thought I'd resurect this thread than start a new one. I'm trying to work out if a lightweight case to fit a cab made of 6mm ply screwed and glued to an 18mm timber frame would be solid enough to support a 27kg cab. It would look like a flightcase but simpler with holes in the sides so that I can use the existing cab handles
It should do without any probs (provided it's not held together with pritt stick). You'd be surprised what weights some things can withstand.
-
It went well (apart from the volume ). Out of all those songs, the only one that seemed to work out was Crazy. There's a couple of other's that could work, but need worked on (a lot). Just sorting out our next session with the same guys (& looking for a keys player). Now a new bass to celebrate would be a good idea, but getting it past my wife could be tricky!
-
So maybe the best approach is to get the plugs (they're not dear & I don't want to lose hearing in my right ear too) & use them to start with, then once we get comfortable playing together, have a talk with everyone & hit the volume issue on the head? I need to have a look at this "jamhub". it might be a good option? The drummer hasn't got his own kit yet & just using the one in the rooms. He's getting a kit fairly soon & is considering an electronic kit as it could suit the style of stuff we're doing better. That would kill the "drummer volume" issue, though he's capable of playing at sensible levels as it is.
In all seriousness, I've got a pair of ER20s or whatever they're called and hate using them. Everything sounds muffled, I cant hear my guitar properly (yes, guitar) and it sucks all the fun out of rehearsal for me. Are the really expensive moulded earplugs any better?
That's my concern about using plugs. Is it going to make everything sound like it's in the next room? If it is, wouldn't I be as well just popping my earphones in (they're noise canceling)?
-
I don't mind loud, but we're not a rock/metal band & the aim is to get a good sound that folk can dance to. The volume that we ended up at was to the point where you just had noise & tinnitus. I'm already deaf in my left ear (not fully, but I do have hearing aids that I seldom wear).
-
I could try the db meter & see. Earplugs might be a good option. Thing is, the drummer was able to play quietly after he'd warmed up & when the guitarist turned down, all was fine. Then when he turned back up, the drummer started building a shed to compensate, then the guitarist goes up a bit more & so on.

I've been getting a band together & now have a guitarist, a drummer & a singer/turntablist. Still looking for a keys player. So we have our first mess about with instruments on Wednesday there & the guitarist brings his own guitar & fx board (when I say fx board, there was only a Bad Monkey & a tuner on it) & he opts to use the in house rig at the rehearsal rooms, a Crate head & 4x10! Why would you need a 4x10 in a room that's about 15ft x 30ft? The drummer's never played drums for some time (been playing guitar, which means he might have a good understanding of instruments fitting together) & he was a little heavy on the snare to start with, but the guitarist's way of compensating was to whack up the volume. Fine if we're playing metal & don't mind going deaf, but it's an acid jazz/groove type outfit. You want to hear & feel what everyone is playing & singing. I asked him if he could turn down, which he did. But after 10 mins it went back up. I'm gonna suggest we try playing at a low volume on the next session. We'll see. I suppose I'm used to the guys in my old band being more experienced musicians than these guys, but I'm willing to put in the effort & see if I can get a good band out of the talents available. I'm not saying these guys can't play, far from it. The genre is just out of their comfort zone (they're rockers, as I used to be). So any of you guys have issues with loud rehearsals/band members & if so, how do you resolve things?

Then I'd be surprised if you'll ever get close to getting the amp to put out 250-300w. Just use your ears. i'd keep your other cab for a bit so that if one cab isn't enough, you can either add it back in or sell the entire rig if it doesn't do the needful.
-
actually after looking at the rig, only the BH500 and BC212 doesn't look too big. Only look huge when stack both cab together. It kinda make me think i shall just sell 1 cab and use half stack instead. Since it still pump out decent wattage when running 1 cab. I would assume the amp pump out 300watt but the cab is only 250watt.
Try it. Does the BH500 really put out 500w at 4Ω or is it 236w like the RH amps? & if it does, are you gonna be running it at full pelt? I'd just use your ears & if you get that loud (or need that many lows) on one cab that it's starting to sound bad, add the other cab again.
-
If you're happy with you MB rig, keep it. If it's about wanting a smaller cab then go with what's been said above or try out the 2X10 Traveller cab (it's taller, but a smaller footprint). I've got the 2x10 combo & it's bigger than the cab you have (it's the same size as the 2x10 STD).
And chill.
Shut up you! I just made profiteroles & have popcorn ready.
-
Do Matamp make an amp that would fit? Might be worth an ask if they could do a custom job.
-
I'd stick all the pedals in a line between your bass & your amp. As for order, one man's peas are another's snotters. Play about & see what makes the sounds You like.

Change the badge on the front for one that says Smeg & tell her the door's jammed.
There is a lovely looking Mesa Boogie Buster 200 1x15 combo for sale, but really Matamp have looked after me over the years. And please don't joke, it will not be well received, thanks.
Sorry Ste, accept my apologies if I offended you. Silly Q time... Why not 2 2x12s in a vertical array? It would be a killer rig.
