Can't comment on the Ampegs (though I've heard that whilst their valve amps are great, the SS are not so great. But don't take that as gospel) but if you like your GK sound, why not get a smaller GK rig or combo?

@ 5 years ago, I spent quite a good few months trying loads of rigs. Ended up with the MarkBass CMD-102P & I'm still very happy with it.

Test it without the looper before assuming it's defo the looper. Most likely it is, but there's also the PSU.

Have you tried this without the loop?

The Roland ME50b is about as simple as it gets. If you know which effects you want, then I'd go for separate stompboxes.

Last time I used a chainsaw it was painful. Not so much for me, more so for the ex guitarist.

Worth asking for a chord chart, but if he hasn't got one (which may be most likely), then learn 2-3 songs. Sit & listen to a couple that you think you can create a good bassline to that will show your skills (use a mix of simple & complex to suit the song). I listened to a few tracks & worked out the chords when I joined a singer/songwriter & he liked the basslines that I came up with, so it should be a doddle for you.

If you're wanting an Ibby, have a play on an SR (now the prestige range).

I started on keys & did a couple of solo gigs in the late 80s playing instrumental stuff like Tangerine Dream & JM Jarre. Then decided to join a band in the early 90s & played rock covers (GnR, The Cult, Led Zep, etc). Then went on to do some thrash (Napalm Death, Megadeth, Metallica). Then in the late 90s, got into computer music & spent a lot of time writing chillout/trance (& even some happy hardcore). Joined an originals rock band in the mid 00s that ended up doing all sorts of stuff, from rock, punk & blues right through to reggae & jazz. Me & the singer from that band then made another band to do songs that wouldn't fit in that band. A mix of folk, americana, jazz, blues & experimental. Spent a few years playing in the church band. Now trying to form an acid jazz/breakbeat band (maybe with some dubstep thrown in there for good measure).

[/quote] A few folk say a compressor is good for helping the synth sounds, but I've not tried one that I like (as yet anyway). I find the essentials for a decent synth sound are octaver (or your synth), dirt & a filter, but like I said before, playing about with gear is the order of the day. I don't have any SA gear, but there's a Facebook group dedicated to making wobbles & a lot of the guys on there have SA gear & Will Cady from SA is a regular on there (he's at the London Bass Show this weekend). Well tonight was the night & it went.... It did indeed, went. Singer texted me last night to say he can't make it as he's working late, this is the guy who told me that 9:30 on Wednesday would suit him best as he finishes at 8PM! Guitarist Facebooked me to say that he's cut his thumb on his right hand & can't hold a pic, so will give tonight a miss. DJ Facebooked me to say that he has his tax return to do as it needs to be in for Friday. Drummer was fetching his friend along who is a multi instrumentalist & a singer. I texted him at 6:30 PM to ask if they're still good for tonight & got a text back at 8pm to say he's in Dundee (@25 mile away), but good for tonight. So I thought a 3 piece would still get a good jam. 9:30, I turn up & texted him to say I was setting up. 10pm I get a response to say he's having car issues in Dundee & would arrive asap. Replied saying "no probs" & then sent another at @ 10:40 to ask how things was going. Never heard anything back so ended up leaving the studio & paying for it at @ 10:50. So a waste of an evening (though I did get a lot done to the kitchen today). I'll see how things pan out when each of them ask how tonight went & I tell them that no one turned up. But I can see me scrapping the band idea completely if this one doesn't work.

That's a nice selection of pedals. I take it you're after a synth sounding setup? If so, try this to start with: Markbass SS > Bass Balls (or Blowtorch) > SA BEF (do you have the Hot Hand with it?) > Chorus Now it really depends on how you use things & what you want to sound like. You can add any of your other pedals to the chain & change any of the ones you have. I'd play with each of your pedals individually, without any others on. Stsart with bass > SA BEF > amp. Play about with it & find out if it actually filters how you want a filter to do so. Then try each of your other filters, one at a time. Then move on to another pedal & find out how it sounds & what it does. It's a slow process, but you'll get a lot of fun out of it & learn about what your pedals are capable of.

Someone has a good Billy Sheehan quote in their sig. Something like "You should only move to 5 strings after spending a good bit of time on 4. A minimum of 20 years". I'm still on 4 string despite having played for nearer 30 years. So on that note, I'm gonna suggest 6 strings (& maybe a drone string too).

The singer is the only one who's so far came back with a song, yesterday he sent me - Mr [s]Sh[/s]Brightside! I suppose it might make a good drum n' bass/dubstep song. Just listened to it again, maybe not.

That's if you like the sound of new strings. It's 2 year old strings for me.
