1. I'd be inclined to say Barefaced. It's what I'd try first if I change my rig.
2.
Listening to Tool made me fall in love with whammy, flanger & delay that's a fact cause combinations of these are pure genius to me but buying/trading effects I found my own sound and combinations with these on my board to compose with my band and rejected some as CE-5 chorus or Guyatone BR-2 effects which I don't really like nor fit in my band.

I have a CE-5 myself and I find it's a little bit too subtle for my taste.
The CE-2 has a couple of trim pots inside (accessible by taking the baseplate off), one of which adjusts the "Depth". Does the CE-5 not have something similar?
3. Neither. Get a bigger board & have it all!
does it really make that much difference when the band are kicking it full tilt? I spent time gettng the right arrangement of pedals/sound in the house, only for it to go out of the window when fighting with keyboards and crashy drummy things.
Yes, it does make a difference.* I'll get an idea of what things sound like at home, but I always find I need to set things up to suit the band. Best thing to do when making your sounds at home is to have one of your band's tracks (or a similar artist to your band) to play along to. That way you get an idea of what things will sound like. Have a listen to some bands that use fx on bass (Miloopa & Tool come to mind) & tell me it doesn't make a difference. Some types of music don't need any effects. Wait a min, there's a sticky thread for this sort of stuff! * Depending on what kind of music/noise the band make.

After reading this thread, it got me wanting to have another play about with my pedals & try a few different orders. Tried the dirt in different positions, but if it's after the filter, then the filter has no effect on it. Went full circle & the chain that suits me best is... Octaver > Bass Murf > Dirt > Filter > Chorus The Octaver, Murf & Dirt are in a loop & when the loop is activated, the Murf sends a clean < 110hz that blends with the higher frequencies that go through whatever else effects are on. Kill the loop & it's just Filter > Chorus. Keep the loop & kill the Murf & you get just clean or octaved bass. I did find turning up the drive on the Murf & adding the dirt gets one awesome dubstep sound! Gonna use that in my new band!
6.
I was thinking along the lines of slowing it down a bit, make it a little more dragging, use the male singer's natural register and allow the electronics guy to come in and do his Kaoss in the higher register. YMMV 'n' all that of course. best, bert
Ooh. Now that's a good idea! Gonna have to have another listen to that song now.
7. You should count yourself lucky to get a response! Most of the ads that I replied to I got nothing back. I suppose it didn't help that some of the ads they were looking for a guitarist & I replied with "I can teach your bassist how to play guitar & then you'll get me as an awesome bassist".
8. That's another great track Paul! I think for next month I'll send you some WAVs & you can pit the track together for me.
9. Just off for a listen to all those now. I used to have that Morcheeba album & had some early Sneaker Pimps & Breakbeat Era tracks. I've been gassing for a fretless for some time now. Even considered taking a chance & getting the Ibby defretted (though I doubt I'd ever get it done).
10.
Wow! What a development. Congrats and good luck! Suggestion: Brand New Heavies: "Dream On Dreamer". I also like the bass part on that one.
That's the only BNH song that I have on CD. Worth a shout. Shelter might suit having a male singer.
Hope it goes well. How about head like a hole (nin), or falling awayb(Mordred)
Good songs, but too much like pop music.
11. Update time. A singer got in touch with me who hasn't had band experience, but has sung in a fair few musicals in Perth Concert Hall. So there's me & the guitarist from the last outing & we met up with him last week. Has a bit of a Snow Patrol voice, but can sing. I also found out that a friend of mine whom plays guitar, also plays drums & he's keen to play more drums. So he's in. He has a friend who is a multi instrumentalist, so told him to bring him along. And to top it off, 2 nights ago I went to see one of my friends who's just moved to Perth. He's a DJ/turntablist & can play gadgety things like the Akai MPC & other control surfaces as well as a bit of keys. So he's in too! & to top it off, they're all wanting a change of musical style just like me, so we're heading down the Acid Jazz/Breakbeat/Trip Hop/Vocal House route. Result! All 6 of us are meeting as a band for the 1st time next Wednesday at 9:30pm for a 2 hour play about & to get to know each other. Can't wait! I've been searching about looking for ideas for a couple of songs to play about with & so far have "Protection" by Massive Attack & "Gonna Be" by Mo'Horizons & maybe something like "So In Love With You" by Duke. Anyone else got any suggestions that I could look at? Things along the lines of Jamiroquai, Incognito, Daft Punk, Miloopa, Roy Ayres, Vocal House, Microhouse & the above artists of course.
12. Sounds like you've had one of the best times ever! Must be a brilliant experience playing with a legend (or 2).

Nah! Bass first, amp & cab at the end & play about with everything in the middle!
14. Autotune for wannabe musicians?
15. Marillion always had some amazing poetic lyrics & quality basslines... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbr9F_asKeQ She'll pray for endless Sundays as she enters saffron sunsets Conjure phantom lovers from the tattered shreds of dawn
16. I had the subscribe message coming up, but not anymore.
17. So you'll be needing one of these bad boys...
18. Is that Bruce Willis on guitar? Only messin. Have a great time!
19. That would be one high 8x10!
20.
Ha ha - it's a Nail-free zone...
You know, now you've said that, 1/2 way through the set MK is going to say "I'd like to introduce my old friend...".
21. All the best for tomorrow. Oh, did you manage to learn all of "love don't live here anymore"?
22.
OK then... Rival Sons.
Opens a whole wealth of 4 piece bands that a 3 piece can play when you look at it from a "who plays what" perspective. Meant to say, good choice of band!
23. The problem with the majority of good 3 piece bands is that after their 1st album, they end up an 8 piece but still advertise themselves as a 3 piece. May I suggest some early Led Zep. OK they was a 4 piece, but that's ruled out by the singer not playing an instrument.
24.
Again, not really my bag, but I like the second one, it really good! Very sensitive to tempo and timing aren't you Big sound, it's a bit overbearing for the song I feel. Nice little note flurries, and I like the fast harmony work with the guitar, or is it like a weird mandolin or something?
Cheers Nige. It's a mandolin & a guitar, all three of us play unison. I was the only one using an amp, the others just played acoustically & the guitar was furthest from the mic. Mandolin was the closest to it. I've been having a listen to all the other posts, really good mix of stuff with some excellent playing.
25. I never got a recording of my fave bassline song from my last band & probably never will as my dear friend & singer took a stroke last year & so far has no interest in music & can't string a long sentence together. So it would be a choice of one of these 2... http://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/stars-guitars This was recorded in the singer's big room (hence the band name, BigRoom). We DI'd & mic'd upto a desk & recorded it into Ableton with no effects on my bass. The reason I like this one is because it is a challenge for me to play & every time we played it, Dave (the singer) would bump it up a few bpm to keep me on my toes. http://soundcloud.com/bassg/my-old-friends This one was recorded the afternoon before our final gig (unknown to us). The gig was in Dundee so Dave & Andrea came to my house for a run through the set & I set up a small mic in the middle of the room & plugged it straight into the back of my iMac. So it captured everything. I use a selection of effects in this song - Bass Murf, dirt, filter & chorus (I sometimes added octave into the mix too, but not on this recording). There's a few reasons I like this. It mixes simplicity with technical. The simple dusty end single notes during the verse, the unison part after the intro & the middle instrumental (though we messed it a llittle on the first run, we hit it on the 2nd) & the use of filtering in the dirt on the chorus. It'd be awesome if my new band could cover this, but I don't know if the new singer could do it any justice. We'll see at a later date. Both different & both great fun to play.
