Well tonight was the night & it went.... It did indeed, went. Singer texted me last night to say he can't make it as he's working late, this is the guy who told me that 9:30 on Wednesday would suit him best as he finishes at 8PM! Guitarist Facebooked me to say that he's cut his thumb on his right hand & can't hold a pic, so will give tonight a miss. DJ Facebooked me to say that he has his tax return to do as it needs to be in for Friday. Drummer was fetching his friend along who is a multi instrumentalist & a singer. I texted him at 6:30 PM to ask if they're still good for tonight & got a text back at 8pm to say he's in Dundee (@25 mile away), but good for tonight. So I thought a 3 piece would still get a good jam. 9:30, I turn up & texted him to say I was setting up. 10pm I get a response to say he's having car issues in Dundee & would arrive asap. Replied saying "no probs" & then sent another at @ 10:40 to ask how things was going. Never heard anything back so ended up leaving the studio & paying for it at @ 10:50. So a waste of an evening (though I did get a lot done to the kitchen today). I'll see how things pan out when each of them ask how tonight went & I tell them that no one turned up. But I can see me scrapping the band idea completely if this one doesn't work.

That's a nice selection of pedals. I take it you're after a synth sounding setup? If so, try this to start with: Markbass SS > Bass Balls (or Blowtorch) > SA BEF (do you have the Hot Hand with it?) > Chorus Now it really depends on how you use things & what you want to sound like. You can add any of your other pedals to the chain & change any of the ones you have. I'd play with each of your pedals individually, without any others on. Stsart with bass > SA BEF > amp. Play about with it & find out if it actually filters how you want a filter to do so. Then try each of your other filters, one at a time. Then move on to another pedal & find out how it sounds & what it does. It's a slow process, but you'll get a lot of fun out of it & learn about what your pedals are capable of.

Someone has a good Billy Sheehan quote in their sig. Something like "You should only move to 5 strings after spending a good bit of time on 4. A minimum of 20 years". I'm still on 4 string despite having played for nearer 30 years. So on that note, I'm gonna suggest 6 strings (& maybe a drone string too).

For an extra £5-£15 you could get a s/h Boss OC2 or OC3.

A box even the size of a single Moog pedal that has the filter & LPF capabilities without the sequencer section of the Bass Murf, but with (internal) routing possibilities so you can send lows clean & play about with everything else would be an awesome pedal in itself. Forget the octave & chorus options, they are small enough pedals to not worry about.

[/quote] With the Moog pedals, a lot of the parameters have CV control sockets, so instead of having to stop playing & bend down to turn a dial, you plug an expression pedal into the socket for the parameter that you want & can continue playing. I have a pot on my bass with just a TRS socket attached to it, I take a lead from the bass to the moogs & can adjust whatever I'm plugged into on the fly very quickly. Now if you could have the filter controlled with an expression pedal & also have an envelope follower that has a CV in for controlling the amount. Have notched sliders for what frequencies you want to affect, the ability to turn the distortion on or off & have the filter still in place. Put an octaver at the start & chorus at the end , sell it for less than £300 & I'll buy it!* That would replace my pedal board as it stands now. * It has to sound great too.

I think the fact that no one even knew about them this year says it all. I never saw the PS4 launch but I heard that there wasn't a PS4 at it? Isn't that a bit like launching a ship without the ship being there? "I hereby swing this bottle on a string".

I'd be inclined to say Barefaced. It's what I'd try first if I change my rig.

[/quote] Yes, it does make a difference.* I'll get an idea of what things sound like at home, but I always find I need to set things up to suit the band. Best thing to do when making your sounds at home is to have one of your band's tracks (or a similar artist to your band) to play along to. That way you get an idea of what things will sound like. Have a listen to some bands that use fx on bass (Miloopa & Tool come to mind) & tell me it doesn't make a difference. Some types of music don't need any effects. Wait a min, there's a sticky thread for this sort of stuff! * Depending on what kind of music/noise the band make.

After reading this thread, it got me wanting to have another play about with my pedals & try a few different orders. Tried the dirt in different positions, but if it's after the filter, then the filter has no effect on it. Went full circle & the chain that suits me best is... Octaver > Bass Murf > Dirt > Filter > Chorus The Octaver, Murf & Dirt are in a loop & when the loop is activated, the Murf sends a clean < 110hz that blends with the higher frequencies that go through whatever else effects are on. Kill the loop & it's just Filter > Chorus. Keep the loop & kill the Murf & you get just clean or octaved bass. I did find turning up the drive on the Murf & adding the dirt gets one awesome dubstep sound! Gonna use that in my new band!

You should count yourself lucky to get a response! Most of the ads that I replied to I got nothing back. I suppose it didn't help that some of the ads they were looking for a guitarist & I replied with "I can teach your bassist how to play guitar & then you'll get me as an awesome bassist".

That's another great track Paul! I think for next month I'll send you some WAVs & you can pit the track together for me.

Just off for a listen to all those now. I used to have that Morcheeba album & had some early Sneaker Pimps & Breakbeat Era tracks. I've been gassing for a fretless for some time now. Even considered taking a chance & getting the Ibby defretted (though I doubt I'd ever get it done).

Update time. A singer got in touch with me who hasn't had band experience, but has sung in a fair few musicals in Perth Concert Hall. So there's me & the guitarist from the last outing & we met up with him last week. Has a bit of a Snow Patrol voice, but can sing. I also found out that a friend of mine whom plays guitar, also plays drums & he's keen to play more drums. So he's in. He has a friend who is a multi instrumentalist, so told him to bring him along. And to top it off, 2 nights ago I went to see one of my friends who's just moved to Perth. He's a DJ/turntablist & can play gadgety things like the Akai MPC & other control surfaces as well as a bit of keys. So he's in too! & to top it off, they're all wanting a change of musical style just like me, so we're heading down the Acid Jazz/Breakbeat/Trip Hop/Vocal House route. Result! All 6 of us are meeting as a band for the 1st time next Wednesday at 9:30pm for a 2 hour play about & to get to know each other. Can't wait! I've been searching about looking for ideas for a couple of songs to play about with & so far have "Protection" by Massive Attack & "Gonna Be" by Mo'Horizons & maybe something like "So In Love With You" by Duke. Anyone else got any suggestions that I could look at? Things along the lines of Jamiroquai, Incognito, Daft Punk, Miloopa, Roy Ayres, Vocal House, Microhouse & the above artists of course.

Sounds like you've had one of the best times ever! Must be a brilliant experience playing with a legend (or 2).
