1. Update time. A singer got in touch with me who hasn't had band experience, but has sung in a fair few musicals in Perth Concert Hall. So there's me & the guitarist from the last outing & we met up with him last week. Has a bit of a Snow Patrol voice, but can sing. I also found out that a friend of mine whom plays guitar, also plays drums & he's keen to play more drums. So he's in. He has a friend who is a multi instrumentalist, so told him to bring him along. And to top it off, 2 nights ago I went to see one of my friends who's just moved to Perth. He's a DJ/turntablist & can play gadgety things like the Akai MPC & other control surfaces as well as a bit of keys. So he's in too! & to top it off, they're all wanting a change of musical style just like me, so we're heading down the Acid Jazz/Breakbeat/Trip Hop/Vocal House route. Result! All 6 of us are meeting as a band for the 1st time next Wednesday at 9:30pm for a 2 hour play about & to get to know each other. Can't wait! I've been searching about looking for ideas for a couple of songs to play about with & so far have "Protection" by Massive Attack & "Gonna Be" by Mo'Horizons & maybe something like "So In Love With You" by Duke. Anyone else got any suggestions that I could look at? Things along the lines of Jamiroquai, Incognito, Daft Punk, Miloopa, Roy Ayres, Vocal House, Microhouse & the above artists of course.
2. Sounds like you've had one of the best times ever! Must be a brilliant experience playing with a legend (or 2).

Signal Chain

Nah! Bass first, amp & cab at the end & play about with everything in the middle!
4. Autotune for wannabe musicians?
5. Marillion always had some amazing poetic lyrics & quality basslines... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbr9F_asKeQ She'll pray for endless Sundays as she enters saffron sunsets Conjure phantom lovers from the tattered shreds of dawn
6. I had the subscribe message coming up, but not anymore.
7. So you'll be needing one of these bad boys...
8. Is that Bruce Willis on guitar? Only messin. Have a great time!
9. That would be one high 8x10!
10.
Ha ha - it's a Nail-free zone...
You know, now you've said that, 1/2 way through the set MK is going to say "I'd like to introduce my old friend...".
11. All the best for tomorrow. Oh, did you manage to learn all of "love don't live here anymore"?
12.
OK then... Rival Sons.
Opens a whole wealth of 4 piece bands that a 3 piece can play when you look at it from a "who plays what" perspective. Meant to say, good choice of band!
13. The problem with the majority of good 3 piece bands is that after their 1st album, they end up an 8 piece but still advertise themselves as a 3 piece. May I suggest some early Led Zep. OK they was a 4 piece, but that's ruled out by the singer not playing an instrument.
14.
Again, not really my bag, but I like the second one, it really good! Very sensitive to tempo and timing aren't you Big sound, it's a bit overbearing for the song I feel. Nice little note flurries, and I like the fast harmony work with the guitar, or is it like a weird mandolin or something?
Cheers Nige. It's a mandolin & a guitar, all three of us play unison. I was the only one using an amp, the others just played acoustically & the guitar was furthest from the mic. Mandolin was the closest to it. I've been having a listen to all the other posts, really good mix of stuff with some excellent playing.
15. I never got a recording of my fave bassline song from my last band & probably never will as my dear friend & singer took a stroke last year & so far has no interest in music & can't string a long sentence together. So it would be a choice of one of these 2... http://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/stars-guitars This was recorded in the singer's big room (hence the band name, BigRoom). We DI'd & mic'd upto a desk & recorded it into Ableton with no effects on my bass. The reason I like this one is because it is a challenge for me to play & every time we played it, Dave (the singer) would bump it up a few bpm to keep me on my toes. http://soundcloud.com/bassg/my-old-friends This one was recorded the afternoon before our final gig (unknown to us). The gig was in Dundee so Dave & Andrea came to my house for a run through the set & I set up a small mic in the middle of the room & plugged it straight into the back of my iMac. So it captured everything. I use a selection of effects in this song - Bass Murf, dirt, filter & chorus (I sometimes added octave into the mix too, but not on this recording). There's a few reasons I like this. It mixes simplicity with technical. The simple dusty end single notes during the verse, the unison part after the intro & the middle instrumental (though we messed it a llittle on the first run, we hit it on the 2nd) & the use of filtering in the dirt on the chorus. It'd be awesome if my new band could cover this, but I don't know if the new singer could do it any justice. We'll see at a later date. Both different & both great fun to play.
16.
https://soundcloud.c...cola-polar-bear Boom, and I'm in, didn't think I'd get it done, and then I did. There were some problems involving a crappy old PC refusing to load the VSTs as I ran out of RAM, but I got round them. ADT wouldn't load, so a little cloning and shifting on the vocal tracks, sadly the SM58 is rubbish for studio recording, as is my voice at the moment (well most of the time to be honest) None of my analogue synth VSTs would load either, so I had to use my Roland D110 for the synth sounds, that actually worked out alright in the end. Anyhow, it is done.... And I am in.
I like that! Very catchy.
17. Finally got some bass recorded on mine. I might try some lyrics, but here it is just now... https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/the-auroral-zone
18. I used this to make a 2 channel mixer on my pedal. You can add or remove a channel to suit. Splitting the audio is a simple case of taking 3 jack sockets & wiring it from 1 to 2 (no buffering needed). I can't find a schematic, but I can sketch you one late if you need it. Here's a handy web... http://experimentalistsanonymous.com/diy/index.php?dir=Schematics
19.
Can you do schematic for Clean + 1 + 2 blender? I can solder but the theory behind it all escapes me... Cheers!
Do you mean splitter & mixer or just a 3 channel mixer?
20. Make a mixer pedal. It's not hard. I made this loop & mix pedal... If you want the schematics, let me know.
21. Think of it as a small double bass that you stick under your chin & play with a string on a stick.
22. I've never used either, but they both get good ratings from the comments I've read about them. How abouts a MarkBass?
23.
Gerroff, those names are for the OP!
Too late, we're now called "Littlebells Babyfoot Blinder"!
24. Slusar is a good band name. So is Rockford Stone. I'm in the same process of trying to come up with a band name (just getting a new band together), so I'm gonna have a deek at Discreet's list. Cheers D!
25. I don't think they've ruined it. Made it different, yes. It's not a patch on the original (& it's one of the few MA songs I sometimes skip), but I think it's better than just playing it the same as the original.
