I have a 3.5mm stereo jack that has a long cable which is 2 mono cables stuck together & has a mono 1/4 jack on each one. Turn your volumes down (important bit). Plug a 1/4 jack into either your bass or line out/effects send on the amp & plug the 3.5mm jack into your iMac. Put the other jack safe so it doesn't short. Open your DAW & create an audio track, turn your volume up a little on the bass/amp & on the DAW's input selection, just select the channel that has audio coming through it. I made a comparison with me playing this way & then using a USB interface, posted it on here & everyone preferred the non USB sound.

I'm hoping he got something last year.

Great pic Paul! As soon as I opened it, sounds & melodies started coming into my head! Gonna jot some stuff down whilst they're fresh.

It will have a different effect on different effects when put in different positions. Playing about is the best order.

[quote name='discreet' timestamp='1359744952' post='1959852'] Well, [i]some [/i]people need effects! Actually I only posted that reply to be deliberately irritating, sorry. [/quote] 'tis cool. It actually made me laugh. My sense of humour.

[quote name='discreet' timestamp='1359743314' post='1959816'] Oooh, you don't need any effects! [/quote] You've not heard me play!
-
[quote name='BigRedX' timestamp='1359739836' post='1959740'] For me it's exactly the same as the fingers or pick argument. You use the one that gives you the right sound and feel for the music. Easy. [/quote] I couldn't agree more. A bit like those who say "Oooh, you don't need any effects".

[quote name='tayste_2000' timestamp='1359727715' post='1959472'] Just preference and I tune a minor 3rd below Low B so a nice big speaker would be a plus [/quote] I use an octaver & go down to Ab without any trouble (it doesn't track too well any lower). Like the chap above says, diameter doesn't equate to bass (look at those PJB combos with the 21 5" drivers).

Why not a 2x10? Depending on your budget, Markbass combos are worth a try. I have the 2x10 & it's probably the best combo I've ever tried (& I tried some nice rigs before buying it).

I have TI flats which I got 2 years ago & love them. They was @ £35, but considering I replaced the rounds every 6 or less months at @ £20 a set, I consider that a bargain. Whomever did say that flats lack top end had maybe been playing with rubber strings. I don't miss the zing from rounds & the flats don't lack clarity when going up into the double figure frets.

Congrats Paul. And to the rest for all the good tracks too. Hope to enter this months, though it's the final month of kitchen work, so it might be something composed on the iPad.

[quote name='LukeFRC' timestamp='1359673703' post='1958791'] I always presumed that that was because string makers will make less money off of flats as they will get replaced less regularly! [/quote] Good point. It might well be a mix of both. Stick a cheapish set of rounds on in the factory & the player will bond with that type of string & have a fear of trying flats as the MD can tell everyone that they're very dull sounding & have no top end, which some folk take as being "you can't hear anything above the 7th fret"!
-
I think one of the main factors rounds became more popular is that they're @ 1/2 the price of flatwounds. If they were both about the same, then I think you'd see a lot more flatwound players (when was the last time you tried a bass in a shop that came with flats?).

[quote name='paul_5' timestamp='1359616554' post='1957482'] Björk. [/quote] The first person who came into my head when I read the title. Not just to play bass, but any instrument. & some of the time signatures & changes make Jazz seem as complex as 90s happy hardcore!

Gramma pads do have an affect on wooden stages, but if you're getting boom on a solid floor, then it ain't gonna help. How about a portable workbench? Something like this... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-Series-09788-Fold-Down-Workbench/dp/B003D0K50Y

The worst thing I've ever "tried" to play through was a Trucker Bass combo. Sounded like a cheap recording of a skeleton having a chug in a biscuit tin & played back through a piezo that's come out the inside of an 80s handheld video game. Made my Carlsberg Cobra 90 sound like a rig of doom! (& you guys already know how good they are). Needless to say, about 30 seconds after plugging into it, it got given to the guitarist to use (stopped him getting into the bass frequencies).

I chose singer because I really can't sing. I can hit notes, but my voice just sounds rubbish! Unlike any other instrument which can be changed for a better sounding one, my voice is there to stay. It sounds good in my head, but when I sing to anyone or hear myself recorded, it's bad. Only time it's sounded okish was when I had the cold in December. I do to an extent, envy classically trained pianists & have always wanted to take up saxophone, but as I already play keys, guitar, drums, know my way confidently around synthesis & to a degree know how to play trumpet, tenor horn, violin, banjo & some percussion instruments too, I'll be contented there. I chose "no" to being happy just playing bass as I think the key to being a good musician is to know how each instrument plays & the best way to do that is to learn them. I'd happily give up all but 1 instrument just to be able to sing though. Maybe I should learn to play the bass sometime?

It can also affect any effects to respond differently that you have after it, good or bad, it's upto you.

I've been looking too. Had one drummer who turned up stoned, couldn't play over 120BPM, couldn't finish a song & went out twice during the 2 hour session for a joint whilst the rest of us waited until he came back to get started again. I don't mind if he likes to have a toke in his own time, but at the 1st band meet up? He might as well have turned up drunk. As for other musicians, do they actually exist outside any major cities? Glasgow & Edinburgh seem to have a decent amount of musicians, but Edinburgh is @ 1 hour's drive & Glasgow is @ 1 1/2 hours & that's to the near side of them. Here in Perth we have lead guitarists, rhythm guitarists, acoustic guitarists & air guitarists. Oh & we have singers who haven't sung outside their bedroom!

I've never had any trouble with pics & there's proof in the photography threads. But I think I know what it might be... Did you put the Flickr URL in the picture link (by clicking on the wee box & then pasting the code in)? If so, that might be the problem. If you take the BBCode from "share" (on your Flickr page image) & then just paste it straight into this comment box, it should show ok.

[quote name='tonyquipment' timestamp='1359531873' post='1956096'] Tuner, overdrive, octave, maybe noise gate(if playing loud, it squeals like pig lol) That's what I would suggest for now.. Dunno about chorus...anyone? [/quote] It depends on what sort of music you play & sound you want. I have chorus & use it quite a lot, but if there's another instrument using chorus, things can sound messy.
-
For home practice only, yes. But I doubt that'll go as cheap as you think it might (though I could be wrong). They're just over £400 new. What's your budget? Meant to ask, is the bass still blue?

Other than the Kickback combos, I've never tried a Hartke rig. But going on the customer service on here, I wouldn't hesitate in trying them out if I ever change rigs.

I've got a box set DVD that I started watching & never got back to it! I might dig it out mutheruckers! -
If you're having no noise issues & all sounds good to you, then keep what you have. Shep's blog probably explains things really well... http://www.sheponbass.co.uk/blog/signal-chain-bassics-part-i-where-to-start.html
