1.
He certainly has A sound and, if he's anything like me, it's a sound that may show some variability from one room or gig to another but it's hardly HIS sound in the normal sense as used here on BC to refer to a particular sound which has been searched for, successfully or not, over a period of time.
I get what you're saying, especially in relation to gear, but his fingers will give him his sound (whether it's any different from many others or not is unknown).
2. Just had a listen to the entries so far. Another good selection of completely different interpretations! Not sure if I'll be able to get an entry this month.
3. Well we had our first get together on Friday night & it was interesting. I couldn't contact the original drummer but another one got in touch with me & said he played in a few HipHop/Funk bands & was interested in playing breakbeat, so we all met up. Me, the drummer, the singer & the guitarist. The singer started off quite wobbly, but I put that down to nerves & fair enough, 1/2 hour into the sesh & he was fine. Not a bad singer either. The guitarist wasn't able to join us from the start & arrived about 45 mins later (he was on a late shift at work). When he plugged into the rig in the rehearsal room (Laney thing with a 4x10) he immediately drowned out everyone. Thankfully he wasn't too bothered about turning down. The drummer is probably a typical HipHop drummer. Stoned & can't play over 116 BPM. He wasn't a bad drummer, but he can't play breakbeat & struggles with faster patterns (especially if they have 16th note hihiats). The singer decided that he doesn't have the confidence to sing (he's never been in a band before), so he left on good terms (still gonna meet up with him just as a friend). I've decided I don't want the drummer due to the fact that he couldn't hold a steady rhythm & kept disappearing every 30 or so mins for a puff, so it looks like I'm back to square one! Loads of guitarists interested but no musicians. I think I'm gonna give up on this idea. It'd be different if I lived nearer Glasgow or Edinburgh, but despite there being a college that has music courses & a drum shop, this area is just full of guitarists. I'm gonna keep an eye out for any bands looking for a bassist see what comes up.
4.
Sounds to me much more like he has found A sound not HIS sound.
Oh, I don't know about that. He might well have a sound that sounds similar to a few other folk, but if he likes how he sounds, then hasn't he got his sound?
5. I think some folk are getting mixed up between a drop tuning & tuning to A 440. Songs with the tuning to Eb is usually done for the singers abilities. Tuned to a standard tuning of A440 would mean you just drop a semitone. A lot of Stevie Wonder songs are in a flat key as it suits horn sections better. If an instrument is tuned to A 432, when you play the same note on another instrument tuned A 440 then it would sound like it does when you're tuning 2 strings & one is slightly down in pitch from the other. A lot of older recordings the pitch is due to someone wanting to change the tempo of the song.
6. "Your sound" is the sound that You like that fits with what you play. This could be from your playing style, from your gear or something else. So it sounds to me like you've found your sound.
7. I think you're making assumptions on how loud this'll go based on the wattage? That could be why TCE led people to believe that their amps put out @ 500w so they didn't jump to conclusions.
8.
My Markbass LMII must be getting on for 10 years old by now, and has a parallel loop with no blend control. However it also has a jumper inside the case that allows it to be switched to serial.
I tried using the loop. Tried the different jumper settings & could hear the difference. Best thing for me is bass>pedals>amp & I only use the loop as a send to the mac for home recording (I have a mono jack to 1 side of a stereo minijack).
9. Like Conan said, there shouldn't be any issues re watts & ohms. If the PF 350 put's out 350 watts at 4Ω, then each cab will get a maximum of 175w. They're capable of dissipating upto 250w, so there's no issues there (the amp puts the power to the speakers, nothing comes from the speakers back to the amp unless there's a short). But, please ignore the watts. If it does sound bad at any point (not in a personal taste thing & more of a farting sound), then do turn either the volume or the bass down.
10. I agree. Behringer are hit & miss, so try one out first. Ignore the wattage, go with your ears. If it sounds bad, turn down.
11. I wouldn't rule out a good combo. I tried countless rigs when I was looking & settled on a MarkBass 2x10 combo which covers all the gigs I've done so far (this includes a DB player using it for the same gig). If I ever needed more, I could easily add another 2x10 cab. The only thing you have to make sure is that You like the amp & cabs from whoever makes the combo you get.
12. I'd try your double bass through the Orange as it has it's own sound & you may or may not like it. Have you tried a booster with your DB? Best advice is to go to a good shop & try things out.

& that's probably why Ampeg haven't made pedals for a while. Stomp > Bzzzzzzzzz
14. Don't Stop The Feeling - Roy Ayres. We're planning on covering it.
15. I'm gonna follow this as I'm wanting to do the same. The Korg Polysix app is 1/2 price until 31/01/13 (£10) & you can run this in other software on the iPad. I'm also interested in the Akai iMPC. Anyone used it? Edit to say: I see Behringer is fetching out a dock similar to the Alesis one
16. I think it depends who's "classic" tone you're after & who you want to sound like. E.G. Stingray & GK rig could get you that classic Flea sound. My classic rig is an Ibanez SR through a Markbass LMII (with some fx for flexing the tones).
17. For big gigs, I'd go for the 4x10 & 15 just for the image.
18. Oi! I might be old & fat (I used to have a 6 pack, now I have a keg), but I'm not bald (yet).
19.
Its funny hearing people say they can run their rig at 3 on the dial or whatever and it fitst the mix though. I think that is massively genre dependant. And rock and punk arent the most demanding genres for bass at all IME, As long as you have some nice grind going on - be it from some kind of overdriveyness or just bright strings hit hard with a pick to push the pups and pres nicely - then you can cut into a rock/punk mix without massive level, even with a pretty massive drummer. However even in my band - which is a three piece with a very dynamic drummer, he can play at whisper level and still groove like mad (never ever met a drummer who could do that anywhere near as convincingly, he is a real eye openeer) right up to road work volumes) I always end up with my rig at real war volumes in rehearsal, and I stand right in fornt of it with it stood on another 410. Its not a quiet cab, its not a quiet amp, its just the rest of the band want to hear more bass (always) which is kinda cool, but I would think maybe a little unusual? I mean its genuinely LOUD in there (ear plugs are required), but it doesnt half feel good when you let rip and can feel it in your chest and your eyes wobble a bit Still sounds fantastic on the rehearsal recordings we do so I'm not worrying, just enjoying it - I certainly wouldnt need to be louder on a gig though!
That's a very good point. Most Rock, Metal & Punk bass have a very mid heavy sound with not so much in the low frequencies (it seems to sit better in the mix for some strange reason). It was the same with the bands of these genres that I used to play in. The last band was a folk/americana band in which my bass had not so much mids & quite a lot of bass which is more demanding on the drivers, even at a lower volume.
20. I wouldn't go for car speakers. 10" are usually subs & are low pass (so no mids or top).
21. When laying down some tracks in the studio & the soundy doing mic placement, Eric the drummer said.... "You can't polish a jobby"
22. Well I'm 42 & just starting a new band myself. I've always been a lover of breakbeat, drum n' bass, acid jazz, funk & house music. I decided as I've never played this stuff live & only done it on my mac, I wanted to. So I popped an ad on Join My Band, Bandmix, Gumtree & at work & so far I have a 37 year old singer who is right into acid jazz, house & breakbeat & sings similar to Jay Kay, I have a drummer who used to gig with a hiphop band & a funk band & is wanting to play breakbeat stuff as well & I have a few guitarists aged between 30 & 40 who want to join (though I've decided just to have one). It's a crossover of genres, so it's mainly originals with the odd cover done sod all like the original. Maybe take a punk song & give it a drum n' bass backbone with funk vocals? Just looking for a keys player now & we have our first get together on Friday. So I say go for it. If a 40 odd year old can do breakbeat, why not punk?
23.
seem to be called the kings house now. odd name. http://www.kingschurchperth.org - I know the fella who leads it, was at his daughter's wedding last month
Cheers, I'll have a look after dinner.
24.
i know a good church in perth, they don't have an amzing amount of musicians at the mo, so much so that I once turned up with a band from Edinburgh to give them a week off.
Which one is that? I'll go have a look.
25. I try & do it with both. Not sure if it works or not yet though!
