If mixing speaker sizes is such a bad thing, how come almost all Hifi speakers/professional monitors are built with different size drivers?
Most good ones don't unless they have crossovers or bi amped (are you counting tweeters as drivers?).

4 or 8 Ohms...WIll I be able to hear the difference?
xgsjx replied to jackers's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'd suggest 2 decent 2x10s. Stack em vertically & you should have a decent rig. -
They're B&C drivers. The orange cones can't be bought over the shelf, but the black ones can (same driver). I imagine it would be quite a chore if you don't have a car. Maybe if you find a shop that has the same head as you have & a selection of cabs that you like, then jump on a train (Warwick could be a good day out as there's a good shop there). They might even have your bass to save taking it.
Love the debate on whats an effect. IMO it all is, if that is how you use it or intend it to be perceived, how you play the bass can be an effect: thumb and palm muting for a section, plucking in a different place to change timbre rather than stomping on an eq pedal, striking the string with your thumb, playing with a pick on the chorus, any of it at all really, using the volume knob to sweep notes in to get a bowing effect. Are these not all really 'effects'?
The OP did say at the start this thread only refers to dedicated FX pedals. I never used to use any fx (other than me>bass>amp>cab). Was always in rock bands. Then when I co founded an Americana/Folk/Jazz project, I found myself using a multi fx pedal quite a lot as it was just me, a guitarist/singer & a mandolin/tin whistle/bodhran. Now I'm starting a new Breakbeat/Acid Jazz band & the sounds I'll use range from plain ole bass right through to using all my pedals to sound like a subby synth. It's subject to the song & style of music. I think if you're fully against effects you're possibly either old, unimaginitave, or just in a band that doesn't require any bass effects.

Use your ears & go try as many cabs as you can. The so called "matching cab" is the one that sounds good to you. I don't like Ashdown or Ampeg. I don't hate them, but there's many that I'd choose over them. But then the fine chap above likes his Ashdowns, neither of us are wrong.
MBX cabs are awesome. Loads of punch and ultra-lightweight. Seeing as you'll only be putting 110w maximum through it it'll swallow it all up and never sound overworked. I do wish GK'd do a vintage styled version ofthe MBX/MBE range though; not keen on the silver grille. Though I suppose it's easy enough to paint black if one cares that much. Truckstop
Or you could put some vintage grey or black cloth over it.

I'd ask one of the guys here... http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/265330523479274/ Possibly Will Cady or Nathan Navarro as they're the 2 SA guys (& very helpful too).

Why do multi fx units not space out the footswitches a bit more?
xgsjx replied to Elvis Valentine's topic in Effects
I think it's all about money & how much thay can fit into as small a space as they can. Buy stomp boxes & you can space them out to your heart's content! -
Fairly cheap new rig - , 8x10, 6x10 or 2x10/4x10 combination?
xgsjx replied to RussFM's topic in Amps and Cabs
im confused? a 610 is only in most cases a speaker lower than the 210's stacked no? andy
A 6x10 (or the 4x10 with a 2x10 popped on top) has drivers side by side (regardless of what way you stack it, unless you put the 2x10 vertically on the 4x10). Putting drivers on the vertical plane narrows the dispersion. The wider the driver, the narrower the dispersion. Putting 2 10" drivers next to each other has the same dispersion as a 20" driver. You don't need to worry too much about vertical dispersion, infact it's probably beneficial if the sound isn't bouncing off the ceiling (like a single horizontal 2x10 would possibly do). -

xgsjx replied to RussFM's topic in Amps and Cabs
A 2x10 + 4x10 (or a 6x10) would have more straight in front volume but with a poorer dispersion than the vertical stack. (that's assuming that the cabs are all from the same manufacturer's range). -
I'd maybe ask Mr Veillette about refinishing it for you. Alternatively, I could offer to swap my Ibby with you.
I'd have hoped that the OP is sorted by now. It's been nearly four years! :-D
I never noticed that! See these folk who dig up old threads like this one! -

xgsjx replied to RussFM's topic in Amps and Cabs
GAK are doing a GenzBenz 6x10 for £369. It weighs about the same as a guitarist with guitar in hand though. If it was I, it'd be 2 2x10s stacked. Ediiit: Correcting price. -
See this information on the QTX driver:

RMS Power: 200W
Peak Power: 400W
Chassis Diameter: 25cm (10")
Frequency Response: 30Hz - 5Khz
Magnet Weight: 1400g (50oz)
SPL @1W/1m: 90dB
Ignore it. It doesn't tell you what it does with the frequencies at 30hz & it doesn't tell you what the box volume should be. I'd email Blue Aran & ask what they'd suggest for a replacement for the Peavey driver.
-
Does your amp run to 2 ohm? If not, I'd make 2 8 ohm cabs. I couldn't advise whether those speakers are any good or not. I'd imagine they'd be worth £26, but I'd rather build a good 2x10 or 1x15 rather than 2 poor 2x10s. Find out what the internal cab volume should be for the drivers that you're llooking at. Peavey used to use Eminence Black Widow drivers, but I couldn't say if that's what was in the empty cabs.
Thanks dude - I contacted yer man. He has put me on the straight an narrow - what I am asking for defies the laws of physics.....I should not have just asked for perpetual motion...! Perfect description from OBBM and what my options are
-
Oooh! Who's OBBM? So - get this right - 2 x 4 ohm parallel wired cabs - weird cable - 4 ohm at amp? not 2 ohm right?
OBBM is a cable maker on here (user ID is OBBM). Here's his website... http://bassic-bits.co.uk/ Getting full power to a single cab isn't going to make it noticably louder though.

Good, lightweight, small combo for gigging electric Jazz bass player!
xgsjx replied to jackotheclown's topic in Amps and Cabs
There's a lot of good small combos out there for your budget. I'd strongly suggest trying a Markbass combo & you'll get 2nd hand in your budget. I tried a lot of rigs & combos & then settled on a Markbass 2x10 as it did all I needed & it's no different from having a MB LMII & a 2x10 (you can easily take the head out & get a lid made for it if you feel you need a seperate amp). -
Thanks - I would like to try for 4 ohm at the amp as I would then get full power.....so, I could use 1 cab at 4 ohm for practice and then daisy chain another cab for live, but maintain 4ohms.......actually, it does not matter that much!!
Don't get caught up in trying to get the full power of your amp. You wont gain anything from it (especially volume). To use 2 4Ω cabs & maintain 4Ω, you would need a special cable made (which OBBM could do for you).
-
Alright - next question. I am going to build 2 210 cabs - wired in parallel at 4 ohm total load for each cab. How do I patch these together for a total 4 ohm load at the amp? The only way I cam think to do it is by cabling the cabinets in series or using a patch box.....I.e cabling the cabs to the patch box then to the amp.
Make each cab 8Ω. 2 cabs daisychained would then make a 4Ω load. No idea about the speakers with that info. Have a look at Eminence & Celestion for speakers. Ideally, you want to find out the specs of the drivers that were originally in the cabs & then get drivers to match. If the cab's ain't tuned to the drivers then you run the risk of either having a crap sound from good drivers or even damaging the drivers.

Roland Rock makes a good point. Do you know what the wood is like underneath? Which bass is it? My original plan was a new paint job. I used to be a signwriter, so had no trouble with paint (though I was considering silver leaf). But when I saw the grain I decided on oil & wax. I did a bit of online research & asked a few folk I know that have experience with finishing wood. If you're happy with the grain, it's easy. Thinking about it, if you're not happy with the grain, you could always use coloured oil. If you do decide on oiling it yourself, let me know if you need any tips.

What about drummers in general? Despite there being an excellent drum shop here & several drum tutors, there's a lack of drummers!
-
How about a Moog Taurus & a Little Phatty & you'll be making thundering basslines in your band again? Or... You could play like Mr Navarro does (left hand hammer ons & a hothand on the right). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEdGA-FmENY

& try telling your average guitarist that!
