1. Novelty basses are the ugliest. Outside that, Fender's Jazz & P basses are let down by that hideous cyst of a top horn! I mean, look!.... OK, some folk might like it. But there's no accounting for taste!
2. As much as Bill is one of my fave bass players, I never liked his tone. Too much mid & no bass, so if this pedal sounds like that, I'll skip it (I'll skip it regardless at $200).
3. I'd say get yourself to the nearest good bass shop & try some stuff out. What you're looking for could be any of those above, it could be a Sansamp or a DAH VT, it could be your rig, it could be your bass or even your playing style or how your EQ is set on your amp. If you're sure it's a pedal, I'd maybe suggest buying things off here 2nd hand. That way if it's not the pedal you're after, you can sell it at little to no loss & move on to the next pedal.
4. I've been slowly putting together a band that's a mix of Acid Jazz, Breakbeat, Drum n Bass & Rock. So far there's me on bass, a singer, a guitarist & (possibly) a drummer. I'm looking for a keys player (or electro gizmo player, e.g. Control Surface), percussionist & any other musicians that could fit in (maybe brass/woodwind). If you're interested & in or around Perth (not the Oz one), let me know. Looking to get everyone together soon & then gigging later this year.
5. If you have a little "know how" & time, it's fairly easy. I stripped my Ibanez & then oiled & waxed it (oiling it is the slow part as you have to wait for each coat to dry & it needs several). It's very rewarding if you decide to do it yourself. Here's how I refinished my bass... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/134250-changing-the-look-of-my-bass Hope it's of some help
6.
We are talking about just a one cab soloution, so wouldnt getting the most out of the amp be preferable in this case?
Not necessarily. The difference in volume between identical 4 & 8 ohm cabs is barely noticeable. The only times that I would look at a 4 ohm cab would be when it's something like a BF Super 12.
7. If you're liking your sound, why not the MarkBass 2x10 Standard? Bigger cab = more bass. Has all the bass of the Standard 15 (they're both about the same size).
8. A different type of dirt might be a good combination. The Mastotron is a fuzz, so maybe an overdrive would work well with it?
9. Have a look at this... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/380-diy-cabs/
10.
I thought it was a LOT to do with watts and Ohms!!
An easy mistake to make. it's all about Xmax & Sensitivity.
11. He did use a BEF (not the Pro) along with the SYB5 & something else (I'll see if I can find out later). I had missed that from my first post. The Hothand can be used with a Midi controller that SA make & the new Hothand 3 can be used with any pedal with an "EXP in" as it has a box to plug into with a 1/4" out as well as the 1/8" out (tempted to get one for the moogers).
12. Re: Flats. works just fine on a filter. I've just finished playing about with my rig & can forget how much fun using the follower on the filter is. Bass straight into filter & wap the follower up & funk central here we come, click the loop & on comes octave & dirt, the follower dies & the expression pedal takes over. Synthy goodness! My filter is the Moog, so a bit more than £100 2nd hand but worth every penny.
13. It really does depend what you're wanting it to do. Soundblox BEF is worth looking at & you get a hothand controller for it too (for added coolness).
14.
I think it can make quite a difference. I have both ABM 410 and 2x ABM 210 cabs. All cabs are 8 ohms and contain 150w speakers. The 2 x 210 combination (running at 4 ohms) is significantly louder than the 410 on its own.
I would be inclined to say that it's not so much to do with the watts or ohms, but the cabs & their sensitivity. A more accurate comparison would be if you had a 4 & an 8 ohm of each 2x10 & could A/B them.
15. I use Velcro Heavy Duty. Got it from Hobbycraft. Good sticky glue & the pedals won't move unless you want them to.
16. I'd go for 2 x 210 cabs too. 8 ohm ones (you won't hear a difference between 8 & 4 ohm cabs). Getting the "full power" from your amp doesn't give you more volume.
17.
I dunno, that just makes me think you are a hipster tbh. I don't mean that to be rude, but i have to say, thinking that any Ritter looks better than a Fender? well, i'm not exactly a Fender fan-boy, i'll play anything that looks, feels and sounds right, and the fender jazz just ticks all those boxes for me. I went and bought my very first bass myself. Hadn't a clue about basses, couldn't tell a fender from a... anything, i had no idea, didn't even know what a jazz or a P was, but i saw the Jazz bass (it was a copy, so i didn't know it was a Fender) and i liked it. It looked good (which was all i could comment on at the time). Have to say, i love the look of the jazz bass, and i think it's as close to perfect looking as a bass could get in my view. The thing about calling you a hipster was just because it's something a hipster would say- "I don't like Fender.... Too mainstream. I like Ritter, they're so underground they live in China."
I don't dislike Fenders because they're mainstream, it's that hideous top horn. Ritters on the other hand tick all my boxes, except for the price. I was gutted after seeing my first Ritter & hoping that I could afford one. I like the Warwick Corvette, but not the Streamer for the very same reasons. Some folk like Bjork, some folk like Abba. None is wrong & both are great songwriters (though I can't stand Abba, I like their songs).
18. Classic is something either groundbreaking from the past or has gained a large following (or both). The Ford GT40 had a name behind it for all the Ford fans & was a groundbreaking car in it's day. The Fairlight CMI is a classic as it was the original DAW with remote keyboard. Fenders have a large following as they've been on the go for yonks & people know what it's gonna sound like before they buy it, so that makes them classics. The Ritter Cora is a far nicer looking bass than the Fender Jazz (IMO of course) & start at @ £4k & Jens refers to the sound as "that classic Jazz sound". So therefore the Cora, as nice as it is, is not a classic & probably never will be. I wouldn't have a classic bass as I don't like the "classic" shape.
19. Check what ohms the 2x12 is as a lot are 4 ohm (which could help turn your amp into a smoke machine). You want an 8 ohm cab. Like Barkin said, adding another Ashdown 15 will give you more of the same. It's not the 15 speaker that sounds like that, it's the Ashdown sound. Some call it warm, some call it muddy, some call it wooly. Ideally, if you're not happy with it, you should sell it & get something that you like the sound of & then add more of the same drivers if needed.
20.
Finally - and I repeat myself - it would be good to be able to buy/download all the songs taking part in the comp every month.
You can download mine for free if you actually like them!
21. Well done BK with a great song (& very good vocals). It summed the pic up really well & I like the choir at the end. Looking forward to your choice of pic.
22. I think the hardest part of getting that good stage sound is trying to convince the guitarist that he doesn't need to be cranked to 11. Once he realises he doesn't have to drown out the snare & crash, then getting everything else to sound good on stage is a much easier job. Ideally, all the SE should need to do is amplify the band's sound. If the band doesn't have a good stage sound then I think the term "polishing a jobby" would apply.
23. That's an old video. Still good! I believe he just used a Boss SYB-3 & a multi fx unit (if my memory serves me right).
24.
You don't want the bass to bleed at all...but it is very hard to control, so the less amount the better. This is why bass heavy cabs aren't really wanted on large stages with lots of mics. The bass is going to get there anyway but you want to cut the amount down if poss... This is also why engrs would not want cabs on stage ...in an ideal world...but their approach is the get the best sound which isnt unreasonable in itself but at odds with a lot of the musos that have to create it. So, it becomes a game of managing your 'compromises'
I couldn't agree more. But why a sealed 8x10? For a stage with full PA & foldback, isn't the rig just for looks? I often find a stage where the PA isn't ample to put the bass through, the venue doesn't usually warrant a fridge on stage & a 2x10 or 2x12 would give a better sound to both the band & the audience. I used to play a couple of venues with just vocal PA, 1 guitar through an AC30, the other through a Marshall 1/2 stack & a hard hitting drummer (though unmic'd) to a crowd of 2-300 & using my 2x10 was plentiful (had to put auralex foam or similar on the big wooden stages though).
25.
It won't. The Fridge is the 'industry standard' for the same reason the SM 58 mic is: you can always count on them to work. They're ubiquitous on TV and in venues where the kit is either owned by the house or rented. Neither is perfect in every application, but both will function in any application.
I can understand a venue wanting a rig to deal with a multitude of styles, but for a bassist's own kit? I suppose it might be down to personal taste (or beliefs).
