  1. Re: Flats. works just fine on a filter. I've just finished playing about with my rig & can forget how much fun using the follower on the filter is. Bass straight into filter & wap the follower up & funk central here we come, click the loop & on comes octave & dirt, the follower dies & the expression pedal takes over. Synthy goodness! My filter is the Moog, so a bit more than £100 2nd hand but worth every penny.
  2. It really does depend what you're wanting it to do. Soundblox BEF is worth looking at & you get a hothand controller for it too (for added coolness).

A more accurate comparison would be if you had a 4 & an 8 ohm of each 2x10 & could A/B them.
  4. I use Velcro Heavy Duty. Got it from Hobbycraft. Good sticky glue & the pedals won't move unless you want them to.
  5. I'd go for 2 x 210 cabs too. 8 ohm ones (you won't hear a difference between 8 & 4 ohm cabs). Getting the "full power" from your amp doesn't give you more volume.

[/quote] I don't dislike Fenders because they're mainstream, it's that hideous top horn. Ritters on the other hand tick all my boxes, except for the price. I was gutted after seeing my first Ritter & hoping that I could afford one. I like the Warwick Corvette, but not the Streamer for the very same reasons. Some folk like Bjork, some folk like Abba. None is wrong & both are great songwriters (though I can't stand Abba, I like their songs).
  7. Classic is something either groundbreaking from the past or has gained a large following (or both). The Ford GT40 had a name behind it for all the Ford fans & was a groundbreaking car in it's day. The Fairlight CMI is a classic as it was the original DAW with remote keyboard. Fenders have a large following as they've been on the go for yonks & people know what it's gonna sound like before they buy it, so that makes them classics. The Ritter Cora is a far nicer looking bass than the Fender Jazz (IMO of course) & start at @ £4k & Jens refers to the sound as "that classic Jazz sound". So therefore the Cora, as nice as it is, is not a classic & probably never will be. I wouldn't have a classic bass as I don't like the "classic" shape.
  8. Check what ohms the 2x12 is as a lot are 4 ohm (which could help turn your amp into a smoke machine). You want an 8 ohm cab. Like Barkin said, adding another Ashdown 15 will give you more of the same. It's not the 15 speaker that sounds like that, it's the Ashdown sound. Some call it warm, some call it muddy, some call it wooly. Ideally, if you're not happy with it, you should sell it & get something that you like the sound of & then add more of the same drivers if needed.

  11. I think the hardest part of getting that good stage sound is trying to convince the guitarist that he doesn't need to be cranked to 11. Once he realises he doesn't have to drown out the snare & crash, then getting everything else to sound good on stage is a much easier job. Ideally, all the SE should need to do is amplify the band's sound. If the band doesn't have a good stage sound then I think the term "polishing a jobby" would apply.

I often find a stage where the PA isn't ample to put the bass through, the venue doesn't usually warrant a fridge on stage & a 2x10 or 2x12 would give a better sound to both the band & the audience. I used to play a couple of venues with just vocal PA, 1 guitar through an AC30, the other through a Marshall 1/2 stack & a hard hitting drummer (though unmic'd) to a crowd of 2-300 & using my 2x10 was plentiful (had to put auralex foam or similar on the big wooden stages though).

Same with Ford Escorts, good value cars, but they're not aesthetically pleasing to me.
  16. IMO Fenders are a bit like ford escorts, they sure ain't pretty! A lot of the design looks fine, but some bits are just "why!". Like that top horn. Though they do sound good enough, there's basses with better sounds (again IMO). I would say an Ibanez SR would cover the majority of sounds, but I wouldn't say it's a classic bass.

    2x15 vs 8x10

    If you think something is missing from your 8x10, try some other cabs. Maybe Orange are not very good at making bass cabs, I've not tried them. Does it have to be an 8x10 or 2x15? What about trying a stack of 2 2x12s or 2 2x10s if you have a need for that much volume? I used to have a Marshall 2x15 rig about 20 years ago. Good sound (not as good as my sound now, but a bit louder), but weighed quite a bit which wasn't an issue back then.

  20. Get a Gramma pad for these sort of venues. Big halls are easy to get boomy & it'll help prevent it.

[/quote] PA support handles all the lower frequencies, so they can be rolled back from the combo a good bit. Watts have little to do with the overall volume.
  22. I've used a 30watt 1x12 combo for backline at a loud gig with PA support & a shed building drummer & had no trouble with on stage volume. It's about placement & EQing. Don't expect miracles, but a 1x10 combo would be ample for monitoring.
  23. Like bobbass4k says, THAT tone is different for everyone. My "THAT tone" just now requires a couple of moog pedals, some dirt & an octaver. But I'm starting an Acid Jazz/Breakbeat band, so this suits my needs perfectly.

  25. I'm a 1 bass guy too. My trusty Ibby SR1000 has never let me down at a gig. I did have an issue not long ago with the active electrics at home, so I ripped them out & rewired it as passive. I wouldn't mind a 5 string fretless though.
