1.
No reason whatsoever why you shouldn't mix any speaker sizes you want so long as you don't go below the minimum impedance (stated in ohms) that your amp will safely drive. Going below that point will make your amp work very hard and likely shorten its life. Most bass amps I've used seem to be happiest working at 4 ohms, and will typically deliver about 25% more power than when working at 8 ohms. What size you prefer depends a lot on how you use them and what music you play. Fifteens react slower (marginally) but will reproduce lower frequencies (typically regarded as those below about 160 Hz) more readily, so can be good for the deep bass required in dub, reggae, house etc. Tens react faster (marginally) and will not 'go as low' as larger speakers, simply because there is less cardboard moving in and out, but personally I prefer them for reasons of both sound quality and portability. I used an Eden 2 x 10 plus 1 x 15 setup for a while and it was OK, but since I bought my first 4 x 10 I've not really used anything else. By far the loudest rig I've owned was an original Trace Elliot 300w head with two T-E 4 x 10s, which, despite the modest power of the amp, set off car alarms 50 yards away at half volume outdoors...
Sorry, but quite a bit of that sounds like you've been filled with marketing codswallop. The main reason you shouldn't mix driver sizes is that you'll get unpredictable results from venue to venue. As for 15s producing lower frequencies, it's just not true. Marketing gobcrappers would have you believe that, but if you go for decent drivers from the same manufacturer, the specs on how low a frequency it can produce have no baring on driver diameter & more so on how the cab has been designed. keeping to the same size drivers means you'll get a consistent sound from venue to venue. I'm not saying don't go for a 4x10 & a 1x15, but you won't really be hearing fully what the 15 is doing as the 4x10 would probably be drowning most of it out.
2. Have you tried popping the DB through Markbass gear to see if you like it? I had a DB through my MB 2x10 combo & I thought it sounded superb.
3.
Indeed, I was slightly worried after posting, that you were gonna come back and say it was a picture of you, and what was my f'ing problem!!
I wish I would have thought of that!
4.
I can't cope with the orangeness of those two nuggets!!
You did ask for Orange folk!
5. A simple & cheap option would be to make your own 2 part pedal that 1st splits the signal so you can put your signals where you want & then the 2nd part would be a simple 3 channel mixer to source your signals back to one. Easy to make & fun too.
6. Can you solder?
7. I'd try stacking them both ways & see what sounds the best when you're not directly in front of them. Nice rig, matches your bass too!
8.
Yep, well done mate, and had we been using a different voting style, xgsjx would have been in my 2nd choice box. So you nearly got a vote mate.
Cheers Dave. Looking forward to this month's comp. More so to hear what everyone else composes.
9. Well done Skol, a worthy win against a load of excellent entries! I'm the only one who didn't get a vote. That means I need to put more of an effort in for this month!
10. I'd suggest a 2nd hand MarkBass LMII & a decent cab (such as that TC Phil mentions). There's tons of good stuff to be had 2nd hand
11. 1st thing..... IGNORE THE WATTS. Go & have a read in the amp & cabs forum for some clarification. I'd try a BF Midget with your Ibby amp & see if it's what you're looking for. Alex gives a 30 day trial & you can add a pre or a pedal if you don't want clean. I've giged with a single 12" cab in a 2 guitar rock band & it's been gigable. It really depends on the venue & what you're using.
12. I'm with Dr Dave. Most of the time my thumb is floating, but it will anchor onto a pickup or the E string without me even thinking about it to suit what I'm playing. It's hard to play slap with your thimb anchored though! Maybe a good thing.
13.
PS: genuinely stoked that I have 6 votes! Cheers folks, that's warmed my cockles on what is an otherwise crappy day
I don't think there's a bad track out of all the entries (which makes it a hard choice), but I think you have a very accomplished track that fits the theme well.
14. A large engineer's square?
15. Can you fiddle the votes? I'm gonna win the photo comp this month if you can!
16. ! Shocking!!!
17. I can only agree with what's been said. Top bloke & made me smile reading this.
18. Is it an unbiased review of blue & green LEDs?
19. Root 5th all the way. Dont stray & play Country! Wait a min.... I play a little Country & follow the vocal line (but with different notes). Have you thought about playing random notes from the scale? http://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/stars-guitars
20. Doesn't work for me either.
21. Hard choice! Gonna have to get a proper listen to all the entries & then vote. What a talented bunch.
22. Being self employed is a hard (but rewarding) job. I was a self employed signwriter for many years & only stopped because business got tough & vinyl stickers took a lot of business away. Yes I could have went into doing vinyl, but it wasn't something I wanted to do. But I know how much hard work is needed for little in the way of money. My other 1/2 has started her own business as a cake maker & when people who usually get their cakes from a normal baker's find out the cost of a cake, they at first can't understand why a single teir cake is @ £100, but when they compare what they get & the level of detail that goes into it, most are happy to go ahead. There's very little profit for the amount of work & cost of overheads, but the enjoyment is worth more than money.
23. IMO, no. Another 8 ohm TE 2x10 would be a good match. Took me taht long to write that, everyone knew what I was writing!
24. I've not tried either, but going on what folk are saying, if you want the GK sound, get the GK (a bit of "stating the obvious" for ya ). I'd go & try a few & see what you like. You might find you prefer the Ampeg to the GK, or maybe something different again. Try several amps is my only advice.
