I'm watching to see what you go for as I'm looking for something too. Interested in a workstation like the Yamaha MOX8, Korg M50 or a 2nd hand M3, but I could quite happily use my mac for the sequencing side of things so I'm also looking at the Roland Juno Stage & the Nord Electro 3 73 key. The Korg SV-1 might be up your street though... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_BPiScinrk

I'd add the 1x15 if it was needed. Either of them would cope.

Small is beautiful ohms selector on small bass cabinet
xgsjx replied to ceilidhswinger's topic in Amps and Cabs
So your all saying that I wont get anymore volume between 4 and 8ohm? Its bound to cut power you would think! Will it not drive 4 ohm amp too hard using 8ohm cab?
You will, but you won't notice it. If your amp is putting out 300 watts at 8Ω, I believe you would need 3000 watts to get twice as much volume. The best thing to give you more volume is more speakers & it's usually wise to keep all your speakers the same diameter. With the LG, you have 2 500w channels. They're not like valve amps where they need a specified load & would quite happily run a couple of 8Ω cabs (or 4 cabs if you wanted to run a big rig). -

EBS make 4 ohm cabs. I know the LG has 2 4 ohm channels, but like others have said, you won't notice the difference at 8 ohm. -
I had a wee play on a Roland Juno Stage a few weeks ago. It has some great piano & synth sounds & you can split & layer sounds very easily on it too. Depends on what all you want the thing to do & what your budget is.

Sack your singer & get someone who can sing in any key! Only kidding. After reading all this thread, I'm trying to envision AC/DC with the capo on the 6th fret!
Look for The Waking by Kurt Elling on Youtube. Absolutely stunning.
+1 & not too hard to play either. Though singing it might be a challenge.

I don't think being the sesh bassist for SAW gets you any Kudos!

Changing the sound of a Jazz bridge pickup
what about nylons?
Do you mean like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMWUYMWlEyo -
Don't look at the features. You can't see sound (unless you use a non newtonian fluid). Use your ears. There's probably been a few on here that's compared those 2 amps though.

Changing the sound of a Jazz bridge pickup
One of my Precisions came with TI flats. I found the tension on those a bit weird. Felt a bit like rubber bands. Bu I might give them a try on my acoustic bass first.
I went from Dr Strings Peacocks (zingy rounds) to the TI Jazz & was expecting a looser tension, but there's nothing in it. -

Tomastik Infeld flats are certainly worth trying. They aren't zingy like rounds, but have a good range into the upper mids. However, I don't find they bring back the depth to the J pick up. It's still plinky. -
Yes, the lack of shielding is an issue... but connecting a high powered amp to a cab with a cable rated much lower than the voltage and especially current running through it... hot cables are bad.
Especially when you're trying to roll em up after the gig!

I'm the same with my Ibby. It's a PJ config & I have it blended with just a small amount of Bridge P/U. I find the Bridge p/u lacks body & depth, even with the tone rolled off it's not got much bass compared to the Neck p/u. I suppose it would sit well in the mix for more funk or punk based stuff where you might want more plink. -
Internal Memo: From: Manager, UPS Depot, Dublin To: All UPS UK Hi guys. I can't decide which bass to buy. If you see anything interesting going through, divert it over here, only need it for an hour or two. Cheers
One bass now had a "test gig"!

I think the speaker/instrument cable is more of an issue the opposite way around. I tried using a speaker cable on my bass & it buzzed like a fridge.
-
Cheers. When I first read about it, I was envisioning a 60w bayonette type pearl bulb in the cab to light up the port ala KB stylee!

Here's a video of the JBL one... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQo_TUhvUzU I was hoping one of them would pop pretty early on!

After reading another post about a chap (AMPEG) who had blown a driver, I thought I'd have a wee read about & came across this...
Some famous US speaker makers (e.g. Bose and JBL) have discovered how to prevent speaker failures and dramatically improve the input power ratings at the same time. Impossible you say? Actually, it is dead easy. All you need to do is fit a low voltage halogen light bulb in series with your woofer - chosen so it has almost no effect at the 1 watt level where efficiency figures (dB per watt) are always measured and quoted but lights up brightly and limits current flow when the power input is enough to threaten the woofer. This works because the resistance of the filament typically varies by around 1:10 from cold for full brightness, so when hot, the series resistance is high enough to protect the speaker. If higher than rated system power is ever applied, the bulb simply burns out rather than the woofer!!! Using this approach, a 4 inch 20 watt, 2 ohm wide range driver becomes rated at 80 watts in the Bose 101. Similarly, a 6.5 inch, 30 watt, 4 ohm woofer accepts 160 watts of "nominal" input in the JBL Control 5. [3] Pure genius or a dishonest but cunning dodge? Seems all is fair in a game where reality has been rendered meaningless.
Anyone know if it works & if so, why don't more cab manufacturers do this?

Speakers run in Parallel......in series....daisy chaining...help
xgsjx replied to AMPEG's topic in General Discussion
The speaker's wattage is how much heat it can deal with. Was you playing at the time & how long at what sort of volume? There's every chance the Ampeg cab wasn't getting 300 watts if you wasn't playing at a pretty high volume. I suppose it's a good way to get rid of the weak cab. Onwards & upwards -
& check that they're all 9 volt or you might need separate PSUs.

One's got an N, one's got an H & the other doesn't?
^^ Cheers folks. It's a tricky subject for obvious reasons. In hindsight I should have trodden more carefully. Hopefully no harm done.
I never read it as offensive, but it is very easy to read things not how they are intended. The Mrs does it all the time with texts!
