1. If you took the 2 pictures, turned one to be the same as the other & overlapped them, that would show the overall dispersion.
  2.
This confuses me. Is the only thing that can cause this proximity to the stage floor or is it some new fangled physics I haven't heard about. And isn't an 8x10 just a two pairs of vertically stacked 2x10's?
It's all to do with the soundwaves of each driver pushing against one another. You'd have the same result if you stacked 4 2x10s in the same config as an 8x10. Here's something from an AV site that explains a bit about surround sound systems. Same logic applies. Here's the site... http://info.atlantictechnology.com/bid/127601/Vertical-Center-Channel-Speaker-Placement
  3.
Hmm, cunning! a ploy to get another 11 pages going on PC or Mac debate?
I could have gotten away with it too!
  4.
Oh I dunno, I'm enjoying seeing how many times people can be so egocentric as to be totally capable of missing the entire reason why most of us are on BC. I know some PC geeks who are more socially aware.
That's usually because they've saw sense & bought a Mac!
  5.
Quite. I don't worry about dispersion at gigs. I worry about remembering my lines and trying not to look like a tit.
I gave up on what you worry about & I just accept it.
  6. You're now gonna spend the afternoon looking for a spare to take with you just in case! Sorry, I'll shut up. Have a good gig tonight.
  7. Some good advice posted there. If you're sitting at home, load up a daw or go to a site like Wikiloops.com on your computer, get some drums going through some decent speakers & jam away. You'll soon be taking basslines to the band to write songs around. I did.
  8.
Doing something seriously wrong if you need to replace power valves anally.
I'm sure you mistyped?
  9.
It would be better. Horizontal dispersion is inversely proportional to the width of the source. By making it narrower dispersion is widened. Of course this makes the head placement a bit of a task.
You could always use the amp to prop the 4x10 up on.
  10. That would depend on the frequency response of the cab.
  11.
I was going to make a bonfire night joke but decided to resist due to the thread being quite tense as it was, your joke was better anyway.
Cheers I think one should always keep a sense of humour regardless of the situation. Or does that make me a bit twisted?
  12.
Weirdly enough I know someone who did that to an Orange 4x12, back when they were considered undesirable old cr@p!
Are you saying that's changed?
  13. I've got a couple of spud guns for hire. Good powerful ones too.
  14. This discussion is getting rather humorous. I'm at work until 10 & I've got my popcorn.
  15. I'd add the Hartke 15 cab rather than the 2x10. Would give you plenty of volume.
  16.
If I do play without a PA in the future, I'd be more concerned about how the mix is than the specifics of bass tone in every corner of the room.
Quite right. I do too. But isn't it useful to know that where your 4x10 may sound amazeballs at X it may sound duff at Y & then you can check & do something about it if it does? It might be an onstage scenario where you have no foldback & the drummer or one of the other musicians think you sound awful (due to their axis from the cab). That way you have some knowledge to find a remedy... Move the other musician to a better position of course!
  17.
I don't think any of my gigs in the past 4-5 years or so, maybe even further back, have had no PA support. If they have no PA for the instruments and just use it for vocals it tends to sound messy anyway, no matter what cab you use. See, thing is, despite it's limitations, vinyl does sound great.
I've played quite a lot of venues where there isn't room for a decent PA that could take some bass & had to rely on my gear to do the job & had good results. Flea wouldn't have a need to worry about his cab configuration (or even to have any cabs on stage) as the PA & foldback would do all is required. Unfortunately, not all of us on here have that luxury.
  18.
Vinyl.
I like vinyl, but it's downside is it's easily scratched & it jumps when you try playing it in a moving car. I'm not saying 4x10s are rubbish. Far from it. But doesn't it make sense to have the knowledge about what a cab can & can't do & how well it projects across the audience (especially if your backline is your only sound source)? Ideally you'd just have a wall of 10" drivers taking up the full wall. Then there'd be no dispersion issues.
  19.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure 210s aren't a new invention.
Nope, but our understanding of speakers has moved on from what it was in the 60s.
  20.
The music industry has used 410s as standard for decades, I'm sure if they've endured this long, they're capable of doing the job.
They endured cassette tapes for a long time too. But CDs are a better medium.
  21.
I love 4x10s. Always have. Always will. The one thing that trouble me with a 4x10 is picking the impedance. I go for 8 ohms in 2x10 and 1x15, so that I can restack them to a 4 Ohms, in any combinations, to include another cab at the venue, etc... With 4x10, I dunno if a 8 Ohms is a good idea, to leave room for another 8 Ohms cab. Or if I should go with 4 Ohms directly, since I have almost never had to add anything to a 4x10. I am conflicted, I know...
If you get a choice of 8Ω or 4Ω versions of the cab you want, why would you want the 4Ω?
  22. Please don't show me things like that. Now I want to build a modular system!

    FX advice

GigRig stuff would probably be worth looking at for powering things. As for order, I'd be inclined to put it in the same order as Woody says, but there is no "right" order. Play about with it & find what sound You like. Have fun!
  24.
Meh - the naysayers are idiots - Glasgow's a great place for a wander. From Central station, head down Jamaica Street to Kenny's Music for a look round, then nip along Howard Street, up through St Enoch Square to House of Fraser. When the missus is distracted by the shiny things, nip out another exit and bolt up Buchanan Street, hang a right at All Saints, through Royal Exchange Square (passing the Gallery of Modern Art and the statue of the Duke of Roadcone) and along Ingram Street. Down Glassford Street at, and into Garth Street for Merchant City Music. From there, down towards Argyle Street, then east a bit and down King Street for a pint at the 13th Note, then across the road to Strung Out Guitars, into Mono for another pint and a look round Monorail records, then back up onto Argyle Street for Guitar Guitar. Swiftly back along Argyle St to Buchanan St again where the missus will be waiting irately at the corner. Tell her you got lost on the way to the changing rooms.
That's just what I did on Tuesday! Then had lunch in Princess Square (across from Yo Sushi on Buchanan St). When you're down the Trongate end (Strung Out & GuitarGuitar), you could pop to the Barras if you like junk stalls. There's the science centre, Kelvingrove & Clydeside to take the Mrs for a loving stroll in the afternoon to make up with her.
  25.
Fair points about the auto wahs, I was trying to make a sweeping generalisation to emphasise the differences between pedal and actual wah. Point taken!
Sorry buddy, I didn't mean that to come across picky. & you're correct that some filters are static too.
