What's a bass? Still enjoy playing, just like I did when I picked it up just over 28 years ago.

That's a bit like asking "What flavour is a cake meant to be". It can be whatever you like. Youtube is your friend for finding out what different things sound like. I like mine like this... http://soundcloud.com/bassg/fears

Bass rigs-the bigger the better in my experience.

I'm another who plays in an "acoustic" band. Vocalist who plays guitar & occasionally banjo, mandolinist who plays uke, whistle & spoons & me on bass & occasionally guitar. It's really down to what style of music you're playing on what you use & play. I use quite a few effects in most songs whereas others I'll use none (some I won't even play much bass if there's no need to, or pick up the guitar). Here's some of our stuff to give you an idea... Get flatwound strings. Sounds like new for years!

If you can solder & drill holes, fitting a couple of LEDs & a battery clip is a simple task (it'll probably give you a pedal building bug too). Have a look in the DIY pedals sticky on here.
That actually got me thinking. A lot of 700+ watt heads dont seem to be available with a 2ohm carrying capacity. Strange really. 2ohm = 16x10 = more than most will ever need.
Stacked vertically? -
I'm from the 'old skool' when it comes to bass rigs. My main rig, as a few of you already know is an SWR1500 paired with two Golly 4x10's and looks like this (gratuitous rig shot) However, until recently (i.e. yesterday ) I have also been using an Orange Terror Bass into my 8 ohm Schroeder 21012-a-like which sounded wicked, was loud enough for most of the gigs I do, and was so portable as to mean only two trips to the car rather than the usual 5. When I re-speakered the Schroeder cabinet I opted for 8 ohms as at that time I could never have imagined using only one cab, so always had the intention of building a second one, but having used it on its own with the Terror Bass I wished I'd opted for a 4 ohm version.
A couple of nice rigs there! Having the 8 ohm version does have better resale potential (& the ability to add another if ever needed) & the 4 ohm wouldn't be moch louder than what you have. -
In theory true, but there's a wide variety of 2x10 combos out there and plenty (not all) would be stressed to buggery trying to keep up with what a 50w valve guitar amp can give out. Also an 8x10 doesn't usually have a bigger 'footprint' than a 2x10 combo anyway, so unless you're playing somewhere with a dangerously low ceiling, the only issue is transportation. Been able to wheel mine out the van, into the venue and a couple of us lifting it onto a stage, is a lot less hassle for me than carrying a 2x10 combo about.
if you're putting the 2x10 on the horizontal, then the footprint is the same, but ideally you don't really want horizontal drivers if you don't have monitors or a PA. I don't agree with you regarding the 2x10 being stressed against a 50w combo as most 2x10s these days are more than capable, but then it does depend on the guitar combo. My 2x10 had no trouble against a Vox AC30, a 100w Marshall 1/2 stack & a shed building drummer. -

I use whatever I need to to get the job done. I'll try by ear first, maybe writing a chord chart for the longer/trickier songs. But for the more tricky ones to pick out, I'll use score, tab, Basschat, YouTube or whatever else I need to. Off to learn Get The Funk Out! Cheers Conan & Higgie! -
Why a 4x10? My opinion is that the 4x10 is a poorly designed cab for the pub gig or any gig that you're relying on it for the band/audience to hear you properly. I'd have a read on some of the other topics in this section about cabs & then decide if you want the 4x10. Here's a couple to get you started... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/176362-bass-rigs-the-bigger-the-better-in-my-experience/ http://basschat.co.uk/topic/180123-2x12-vs-4x10/ I'd save up a bit extra & get a decent amp/cab or combo (really depends on what you want, I opted for combo for quickness & portability).
Ohhhh that seems ace. Imagine the HH with moog stuff. Nom
There was a wee discussion on OBW when Will Cady revealed the HH3. I asked if it could be used with the moogs & he said yes, I tried to see if he wanted a swap (offered the wife too!), but he never confirmed it.
SA Dual Expression pedal --- Subdecay Echoboc --- SA BEF Pro --- ss/bs TAFM --- SA MWD Pro --- ss/bs TAFM w/gate It started sometime in june, a late night conversation on skype with a mate (drummer, producer) reminiscing about the good ole days and ended with us looking to start a side project. Its not much, but this is where I am. Will have a 2nd hand Fuzzrocious GS next week to throw in there, bit of a fuzz off with the TAFM's . Pedal want list as long as my arm, just need to raise some cash.
Great start! I take it you've got very long arms?

It looks like a byoc or similar. Without hearing his sound, I'm gonna take a stab at it being a dirt pedal.
-
What about plugging the bass straight into the desk? I've done that a few times & had no issues.
-
I don't have a back up amp, but what about specialist insurance? Does that not get an emergency replacement out to you straight away?
-
Tuner is best at the start, the rest is really up to how you want to sound. Some people will say stick the compressor 1st, some will say last, some will say in the bin. As for the EQ, it depends if you're wanting to shape what's going into pedals or what's coming out of them. Putting it after gain effects means you can roll off the top end to remove the harshness, but you might be trying to get that harshness. Play about with your pedal order, it's 1/2 the fun of having pedals. You'll probably move them about again in a year or so.
-
Moog Bass Murf does a very similar effect to what you're after. But it's not the cheapest or smallest pedal (you could get a seperate Fanger & Distortion pedal to fit in the same space & have some change for another pedal). But what it does, it excells at.

My recommendation is a 2nd hand Markbass 2x10 combo (or save a little more & get new). But they're very reliable. Reason being, I was in the same position (pub rock band) & tried countless rigs. Ended up settling on a combo (for quickness) & 2x10 because a 1x15 doesn't have as good a dispersion & I wasn't sure the 1x12 would do the job. Another good option would be a Barefaced cab with any of the decent small heads (there's loads that'll fit in budget). There's a lot of good gear in her budget though, so get her to try loads of different rigs. As for a 4x10, I wouldn't recommend one over a 2x10.
