Your amp's max wattage output is 500w, therefore 2 8 ohm cabs would still get a maximum draw of 500w (250w each regardless of their wattage). Does that help? Edit: If you're using 2 heads, each going into it's own cab then you'll be feeding each @ 350w. So a 700w rig.

I think if you're recording a cover then you need to get permission from the copyright owner & arrange to pay royalties. I don't believe it's a difficult thing to do.

I'd looked at the Ashdown pedals too, but the size is a factor here too (says the guy with moogerfoogers). They probably would sell more if they was in a smaller enclosure. Agree with you on the VU meter, but they could make one about the size of a penny to put on smaller pedals if they so insist.

The Boss/Roland multi effects units are probably the most user friendly & sound excellent (not that Zoom or Line 6 don't sound excellent also).
Sorry OP, but you're an idiot. First time I've slagged anyone off on this forum too.
Nice of you to start now. I ask a simple Q that I could have worded better, put a list of bassists that inspired me (if you go & read the 10 fave bassists thread & read my post) & a couple of folk go defensive. How does it make me an idiot? Jeff Ament? I've taken a lot of inspiration from Pearl Jam & Ten is one of my all time favourite albums. I was gonna put Tina Weymouth on the list & she's possibly my favourite bassist. Like I said, I should have left the list off. It's not a poll. If I've offended anyone, sorry about that. It wasn't my intention.
Surprised I haven't been nominated yet. I'm enthusiastic but sh*t!
You're famous, but you play DB too, so that scores extra points!
@xgsjx - just listened to the band on your myspace link (http://www.myspace.c...33147526&ac=now) and the bass player (whoever that might be) is playing what is needed & very little else. So he gets my vote. :-)
He would get my vote too, but he's not famous.
I really don't understand this. What more should you be playing than what is needed in the song?
Nothing, if you don't want to. I was just trying to make a topic for fun, though I suppose it's created some interest.
Yes you did! you said they couldn't play enough to be called bassists.
I actually didn't mean that bit to relate directly to the list I put.
I think you'll find a lot of those C&W I-IV- I-IV players are earning a very nice living in Nashville - guys like Dave Pomeroy, Mike Brignardello, Larry Paxton, Glenn Worf, & Hutch Hutchison also do other types of gigs that don't involve playing root - five or ice cream changes.... They're not doing regular 9-5's like you & me - they're more talented than people think.
That's very true & I know a lot of C&W has some very inspiring basslines.
Brave of you to open that can of worms...
Wow! How right you was! I wasn't implying any of them couldn't play. Just looking for who folk thought was their least favourite. I shouldn't have bothered with a list of ideas & left it to folk to come up with their own. Oh well, I'll take more care on what I'm posting next time.
-
I'm not actually saying any of them are rubbish, just more of they play what is needed in the song & very little else. Adam Clayton is another you could add to the list. He's not a technical bassist, but he does come up with melodic basslines that anyone can play. Like I said, I grew up playing along with this kind of stuff & was great for helping me keep a steady timing & learn how to play the thing. Sorry Luke, I was gonna put a smiley after that to indicate that it was a jest & yes I agree with you.

OK, we've had your inspirational, your favourite, your top & so on, but who's the worst famous bass player* that you've heard? Here's a wee list to start you off... Michael Anthony - Van Halen Jeff Ament - Pearl Jam Nikki Sixx - Motley Crue Sid Vicious - Can't remember Gene Simmons - Kiss Pete Wentz - Fallout Boy Mike Dirnt - Green Day Robert Trujillo - Metallica Paul Gray - Slipknot Krist Novaselic - Nirvana I like all those bands too, & played along to many of their songs. But I suppose that's because they're simple rock basslines. Then there's all those C&W I-IV-I-IV players whom have about as much motivation as a McDonalds Waiter. * I use the term "player" loosely as we're looking for folk that haven't progressed enough to be classed as a bassist.
Moi? I didn't say that. My point was that reaching for an effects pedal isn't the answer if there are things you can do first with your bass and amp that gets the job done. I don't use pedals and last Monday was asked to turn down as I was vibrating the glasses off the shelves. Just my experience. Maybe I’ve read this wrong, but I think the guitarist is barking up the wrong tree. The OP probably sounds just fine and the guitarist is worrying about feeling exposed when he looses his "safety blanket".
Sorry Chris, it wasn't really directed at anyone. What you & others have said is a very valid way of working if you don't want to use effects, but I find (depending on the song of course) that adding some drive or having the octave set with a little sub added to the clean can boost the overall sound just enough without being noticeable to the listener.

Does active and passive inputs really matter in a bass amp?
xgsjx replied to DanTheMusicman's topic in Amps and Cabs
I recently ripped the active electronics out my bass & wired it up passive (new pots etc) & it puts out the same level of signal. -
I don't get why blues rock means you can't use any fx? I used to play blues rock & used fx.
-
Get a multi fx & find out what you're gonna use. For thickening, you could add chorus, octaver (wet & dry signal) or another gain effect or all of those.
-
You mean like one of these?... http://www.pittjug.org/catalog/multimedia_speakers/2/pc_cassette_drive_61.html I don't think they make em anymore.

Here you go. http://www.sheponbass.co.uk/ Click on "Blog" & browse away.

Shep's blog has just about everything you need to know about effects. I'll get the link in a bit. YouTube is also your friend.

For the sounds that you're after, it would be worth looking at the Roland VB system (the old one). Usually @ £300 or so. You can even play your Juno from it. If you're looking for the more DnB, Dubstep, Electronica type sounds, then you're looking at Octave>Fuzz>Filter & some other pedals to tailor your sound more (can end up costing a small fortune).
Er, all of em!
Good answer! If there's an input gain knob then it might not have the 2 inputs. Which means you just set the level to suit your bass. -
I agree, the mods do a great job on here.

Are the PA cabs farting or struggling at all? If not, then they'll be fine.
-
Go & try loads & take someone with you to get an audience opinion for how it sounds. I went all round Glasgow a few years back to get an electro-acoustic. I tried Takamine, Yamaha, Ibanez, Ovation, Fender & a good few others in the @ £500 mark & none made me smile. Went to a wee shop in Falkirk, tried a Freshman & bought it there & then. Fantastic instrument.

I've gigged with a 30 watt 1x12 & it's been fine (although pushed). However, that was NOT in a pub, but in a town hall & no PA support to @ 100 people. The Peavey TNT or Ashdown MAG gear would most likely be an excellent starting point. As for how loud a thing goes, it's down to a lot of factors & wattage only being a tiny factor.
