Very true. And the precise reason that I've remained a non-fx-user. Finances simply don't permit me to splash out on unit X only to find that it doesn't / can't do what I want it to. Then comes the "sell it on, take a big hit" part before I splash out on unit Y.... rinse... repeat! Bearing in mind that boutique fx can cost a lot of money, it's understandable that some people shy away from them, especially as there's not some epic "FX emporium" where we can all try them out to our heart's content. Online videos and soundclips aren't enough to demonstrate how a given fx unit will work with all the variables that a player/technique/bass/amp combination can generate. Does anyone want to start an "FX emporium"? That'd be ++Awesome++
One of the reasons I ALWAYS suggest getting a multi FX unit to folk whom are new to effects is to get to know what different effects do & to find out what you're likely to use in a band setting. Saves a fortune on "bling bricks". Buying 2nd hand is a good thing to do if you're not 100% if the pedal is gonna get used, that way you can sell it on at minimal/no loss.

I've got a Talkbass membership & an UglyBass membership & a Moving Air membership & the only bass forum I'm ever on is Basschat. I'll go & have a look at Bass2Bass though.

I'll have a look & see if I have (most likely as I'm on FB & Google quite often). Cheers.
Are you running Incognito for Safari?
Not that I'm aware of. Would it sort that issue?

Only time I get that is when I'm at work & it's due to certain hosts being blocked (places where pics are linked to). What I get is unable to view pics posted by waynepunkdude, but that's only in Safari & it's fine in Chrome (it did bug me for ages).

I had one of those Zoom 708 multi fx chats that you've got. Dig out the manual & learn how to use it, it's not hard when you get past the technophobia. It's a good way to work out what YOU want. What I use might not suit your style of music (then again, it might be bang on the money). I would suggest clearing a handful of the patches so there's just one effect on each & play about with it. Then work out what effects you think you're gonna use in your band from there & buy the boxes you need. Also read Shep's blog on effects (there's 8 parts so far)... http://www.sheponbass.co.uk/blog/2012/2/11/signal-chain-bassics-part-i-where-to-start.html

If the combo is the same size as the amp and cab combined, then there's probably no difference. as for if you want the 2x10 or 1x15, go & try them & see what you prefer.

Loving your blogs & interviews. Not had a chance to actually read this one yet, but really looking forward to it! You lucky man! I hope you said Nerve need to do a UK tour (and come up this way).

Pretty much Bright Onion make what you need.
It sounds to me you need to go on a testing spree before you shell out for anything
+1 Don't worry too much about the wattage, it means little in regards to volume. If you get a 500 watt amp & a 200 watt cab, it'll blow it just as a 200 watt amp would. Turn down if it sounds bad, simple as that.
-
I've recently found out that the old "active is louder than passive" myth is a myth. What you want is an A/B box like dannybuoy says & make sure that both inputs have level controls on them so you can match them for volume. It's an easy DIY build if you're handy with a soldering iron.
I'll make sure to pop into andertons and test the difference between the 12's and 10's but i do usually prefer 12's.
Is that because a 1x12 will move more air than a 1x10? Though Markbass don't do a 1x10. The main differences between the 1x12 & the 2x10 is the 1x12 is more portable & the 2x10 is louder & goes down to 40hz (the 12 goes to 45hz).
My problem with this debate is: I like effects, my favourite bass players use effects quite a bit(Tim C, Takeshi Ueda) and while at hoem and playing I can write a fairly decent set of lines with effects doing a lot of work, with out having to chanmge my usual playing style. However as soon as more guys turn up (usually guitarists) I feel they are totally unecerssary(being open minded it maybe just the kind of music it is) Example there is one song where In my head using some chorus of phase effects in the chorus will add a lot of ambience and sound mint! and adding fuzz or drive to the massive ending will really give a massive layered sound and make everything huge. While at home it sounds good, the same lines sound just as good with no effects(is compressor really an effect??????????) so I'm turn at what to go for. While in the band setting the effected sound just doesn't quite sound right, again this could be the music we are playing, which is fairly straight forward.
I don't think it's a problem, just valid input to the debate. If you're using fx in a band setting (as many of us do), you need to make sure that the effects that you are using are going to fit in the songs that you are playing. If your guitarist or another musician is using chorus, then you might find adding it to bass takes away from the overall effect. Using effects to good effect requires listening to the whole band as one. Hearing the song as a non musician (a skill that can easily get lost when you learn an instrument) and being able to say to your self "That sounds XXXXX". As you say, it could be the music you're playing & different types of music are subject to different effects, but I think if you wanted to use effects in there then you could. It's getting the right sound from each instrument & if the guitarist is coming in with 20 pedals all on at once, then there's gonna be nothing left for you to use.

The 102 (2x10 combo) is a great combo & at 44lbs it's a 1 handed lift. However, it is a bit bulky for running around the streets & on & off tubes with. The 1x12 combo's are only 4-5lb lighter, but they look like an easier carry over long distances. Another option is to get a small head to put in a bag (bass case, shoulder bag, etc) & get a small but highly sensitive cab from the likes of Barefaced.

Ibanez SR605 lefty vs SR1205 right handed. Weird question, I know.
xgsjx replied to BELA's topic in Bass Guitars
If you're comfortable having an upside down bass, then go for it. I have an SR1000 & it's been a brilliant bass. If it was me in your position, I'd either be going for the 605 & using the extra money on upgrading the pick ups (if they really need upgrading) or another fx pedal or holding on until a better Ibby comes along. -
My singer has one of these. You plug it in to the PA or 2nd channel on the amp & roll off all the top end so you just get a thump. It's just 2 lumps of wood with a piezo wired into it. You get a bit of 1/2" board with it to sit it on, but my singer usually sits it straight on the stage floor. Makes no odds.

Rate my rig (going to buy next weekend), thoughts and opinions welcome...
And............?
The answer is here. Plenty about electricity behaviour & gardening too! -
If you can get time, get yourself to somewhere that has a few tiny heads & try a few out (you won't find em at a bodybuilder's meet). So that could be a shop, a Bassbash or just asking about on here to folk that are in your valley. If you're happy to buy blind, then anything from the likes of Genz Benz, Mark Bass, GK & so on are gonna do an excellent job when put through decent cabs. Anything after that is down to personal taste. I bought my Mark Bass blind after trying a good dozen or so other rigs out & I couldn't be happier with it. I've heard the Orange only really does one sound, but that one sound it does really well. Never tried one though.
We've done organic DIY plant food and greenfly killer already. Don't make me resort to home brew napalm...
Now that would be useful in my "garden". The neighbour suggested a flamethrower & a couple of grenades.
You don't need the Gardening thread, you need a new one entitled 'Jungle Warfare' The gardening thread is possibly the longest running thread on BC without a cross word being spoken... a little vegetable oasis It's here BTW.
Any chance you can bring that lot round to my place and sort out my garden? It's gone a bit wild since I started posting on this thread
It's a slooow job & takes time & dedication. A bit like gardening.

Now that I do need to get involved in. I've just started learning about gardening this past couple of weeks. Mother nature's had it for the past 4 1/2 years & I'm slooooowwwwly taking it back. It was like the Amazon, now it's just a jungle. There's rhubarb in there, there's some weird exotic plants (probably weeds) & there's loads of my old favourite.... Brambles! I bought a strimmer & a lawnmower & now have something that resembles a patch of grass & I'm working on what could once maybe have been a vegetable garden!!! The neighbour has one of these "Bushcutter" things. It's like a petrol strimmer with a thick 3 pronged blade. He went into my jungle & broke it within 5 minutes! Oil peeing everywhere! I've been slowly working on a corner with large shears & heavy duty loppers (that can cut a 2" branch) & slowly working my way in. I can almost get to the 2nd shed!
The £5k budget is for amp and bass. I'm thinking maybe Fender jazz deluxe 5 with mark bass little mark tube 500 and a mark bass 4 x 10. Or maybe a genz benz shuttle and a vanderkley 4 x 10 or......... a genz benz with a bergantino 4 x10. Thoughts? I've been to bass Direct all day today and I have only warmed to this gear. However, obviously I didn't try every bass in there. Maybe a bass modelled on a j-bass with better components would be an option.
If you're only warming to things, then don't rush into it. Find your ideal bass first of all & then take that around to find your rig. Get yourself a shot of a Dingwall whenever you can. I tried one quite some time ago & loved it but the Mrs wouldn't let me bring it back from the states (it was before you could get them here). Fanned fretboard takes about 20 mins to get used to & then it kinda feels just natural.
