Has anyone heard of an instrument brand called Texas (other than Texas Instruments AKA TI)? I saw a jazz bass for sale (though it might be gone now), but can't find anything on them. I think it's just a cheap Fender copy, but it got me curious? Here's a pic from tinterweb...

Bit of perspex arrived today. It's 3mm too small! I think my bling project has a jinx on it. Silly me went & measured the top of the box in a hurry, not realising it's a frikkin tapered lump of plastic! I might end up sticking those superbrights elsewhere.

I'd do the same as BRX says too. Roadtrip. Although you say you don't like fanned frets, have a shot of a Dingwall before you rule it out. I seriously regret not getting one when I had the money. I've had an Ibanez SR1000 for the past 23 years & it's still my main bass. Damage? Usually that term means "how much it'll cost You to get it fixed". It shouldn't cost you anything if you've never used it.

Before you do anything, where did you buy it? You can take it back & get a repair, replacement or full refund (even if it was a 2nd hand purchase).

Garageband is a doddle to use & I've found the best results are from taking a cable with a 1/4 jack on one end (plugged into bass) & a 3.5mm jack on the other (plugged into the socket on the back of the iMac). Open up GB & create new song (giving it the title you want), then on the top bar click Track > New Track > Real Instrument Track & click Create. On the new track that 's been created, it will have 5 icons (at the far left under the track name, which is probably "No Effects"). The first is a • , Click it so it goes red. At the Right of the screen there is a panel called "Track Info". At the bottom of the screen it says "Details", Click the arrow. Now choose your input source (if it just comes up "Mic" then you need to go to the top bar, click Garageband > Preferences > Audio/Midi & choose from the dropdown). Back to the "Track Info" pane, make sure your volume isn't turned full whack & click the Monitor dropdown & select On. If you have any trouble with the rest, let me know.

I prefer blend. It gives me a better control over the volume without changing the tone & it allows me to quickly switch from Neck to Bridge easily if the next song requires. I usually have it blending a small amount of Bridge into the Neck.

What about pool table felt? Take a bit of Velcro to the pub & see if it sticks.

You can go from either your DI or the fx send. Some fx sends bypass the amp's EQ section. I've recorded using both (not at the same time though). So your answer is Yes, you can just get an XLR to jack (of any size you like), plug in & record.

I was always a "9s on the electric & 11s on the acoustic". I hardly play electric nowadays & just restrung the acoustic with 13s & quite like them.

If you need a perfect finish & confident in using the gear, hire it. Though if you're good at spraying, you can get the same finish with cans (I used to be a signwriter to trade). EH fetches up a valid issue, but if you leave the coats to fully dry & keep to the same kind of paint (as in not doing one coat cely & the next colour something else), then you shouldn't have a problem. Test on something before doing the bass.

Very nice wee combos & good to see H||H back with something. I'd have offered, but my situation just now means I'm not gigging, rehearsing or even meeting the band for some studio time (renovating the house). I might PM you later with a different Q that you may be able to help with.

Worth trying on an old set of strings to see what you think (that's if you have any spare WD40 lying around)

Another thing you can use in them &it won't harm the fretboard, is WD40.

I used to go for the bright zingy sound & liked DR Strings. Ususally got about 4-5 months out of them (though if I was doing a lot of slapping, I'd have to replace the G more often due to it snapping). Now I've gone off of that zingy sound (it only gets in the way of the other instruments ) so I replaced them with TI flats back in January, 2010. Not replaced them yet, I'm waiting until they dull down. & I still do a bit of slapping on them.

That's my Ibanez SR1000 4 stringer that I'm using as an example of why I could do with 6 strings. It's strung with flats & put through my pedal board. The singer plays a Garrison Acoustic that he brought back from Canada (if his accent didn't give it away, he's Canadian ), he got Strung Out in Glasgow to fit a piezo pick up in it. The track was recorded in my living room with a small condenser mic plugged directly into my mac (& sat too close to the mandolinist).

Best advice is to get yourself to a decent music shop that has a few decent bits of gear & try some out. A lot of the light 1x15 & 2x10 cabs can be carried with one hand very easily, meaning you can stick the head in the pocket on your bass bag (if you have one).

I wonder if it's all original Squire or if he's changed the pick ups or electrics?

Is the LB212 the Ashdown & is it 4Ω? If so, then no. The Promethean (& most other small heads) have a minimum load of 4Ω, though EBS & Ampeg do go to 2Ω. I'd have a look at the 2x10 cabs or if you have the budget, Barefaced.

Now I'm wishing I would have nabbed that Freqbox when I had the chance. A couple of years ago a local shop was selling a brand new one, in the box for £165! You may slap me now!

You don't need a trolley for that combo, it has one built in! I was gonna get one before I got the Markbass combo (one big selling point for me is that it weighs 44 lbs). If you're getting shot of your combo then I'd have a look at the Barefaced cabs & choose one of the many excellent light amps (any of those mentioned above are good starting points). Or if you're keeping with the combo idea, then have a look at the Markbass offerings. I carry my combo in one hand, pedal board in the other & the bass slung over my shoulder.
