Bank Holiday Bass Buffet ...an invitation
xgsjx replied to Born 2B Mild's topic in General Discussion
I can't make it (distance being one of the factors, the Mrs being another ), but I hope you guys have a great day.
I like the emphasis on "current" there!
Maybe a hint he might make it after all? -
In most instances, what sounds good at home doesn't fit well when put in a band situation & turned up. You need to spend a little time with your band playing with your EQs (on instruments & amps) & getting everything sitting in place.
Thought I'd share a few snippets from a recent recording session we did for some soundtrack-based stuff. The full versions of these song may never get released, but I wanted to share a few bits. More of a breakbeat/ambient vibe. These are not final mixes so please excuse any imbalances or lacking frequencies etc... These were all recorded in totally live takes with just the two of us (me and a drummer) so everything you hear that is not a drum is me playing, modulating & tweaking stuff live... Huge soundscapes!

Good question. Try it. If it doesn't work, take it off again. Mind & post your results.
....it has to be said, seeing this drummer again is a breath of fresh air compared to the blizzard of 'May the fourth be with you!'s' that I'm weathering at the moment...
Well as you've missed him... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItZyaOlrb7E -
Not at all - the freeze won't do looping of phrases, but generates drones based on your input signal - a bit like this:
Ahh, I see. That could come in handy.

Never seen them before. You should show Wateroftyne that, he'll love it! -
If I could afford it & you could make moog clones, I'd have a board full of your pedals!

Your link goes to an ebay page that says "Sorry, not found". Is it a slot for lost things? Have a read at this for powering your pedals.
The freeze pedals get loads more useful once you put them in a loop. I regularly set mine droning a chord or double-stop up the dusty end and then when the guitarist dives into a solo just bring it back in without stopping the bass part. The trick is finding one chord or note that will fit with everything else...
Do you play to a metronome? If I set the murf to a pattern & we start off in time with it & then turn it off for something like a verse, when I bring it back in the tempo is out.

I always wanted to go & see him in the Rio whenever we went to Vegas. Finally the Mrs said we could go & see him back in 2007 & He stopped his residency there! However, Bjork did a gig in the Palms & it was awesome!!!
Any one got any links for tunes that people play with loads of strings basses? I've heard that Jean Baudin super mario stuff done with an 11 string bass which was super, but would have been just as good with a piano/ keyboard.
Done on a 4 stringer, but a good reason to need an extra string higher. Please excuse some dodgy mandolin playing, she's new to the song. http://soundcloud.com/bassg/my-old-friends

Worth having a try. Just re reading things & having another listen. Have you tried backing the bass's volume off a bit? Might be too hot a signal (though it would be odd to be all 3 instruments. Maybe it's the F word ).
-
'tis most strange. Have you tried a different instrument (guitar or keyboard) through the fx to see if you get the same? Do you get it if you play elsewhere or just in your house (might be your lekky supply)?
-
That rules that one out then. I think it's gonna be a process of elimination. Are you using it just Bass > Blowtorch > Amp or is there anything else in the line (such as bypassed fx)?
-
Could it have anything to do with the cable from the bass to the pedal (or the socket on the bass)? Might be the + & - are getting swapped somewhere, though I'm not sure if this would be an issue. Other thing I can suggest is backing the vol off a little on the bass & see if that changes things.
-
Speaker size has little to do with the amount of bass it can produce, that's the cab's job. 10" drivers give a better dispersion than 15".
-
Looks like a good buy & you can add another cab if you need to for gigs. One thing that seems to be a bit misleading is "2 parallel speaker outputs - to use with 2x 8 ohms bass cabinets or 1x 4 ohms bass cabinet". I believe this would only be the case if you are to disconnect the internal speaker (which is probably 8Ω) as I don't think the amp will run at 2Ω. So when you are adding a cab, do check in the manual what it will take to save overheating.

Have a look in the for sale section on here. Ibanez have a great range of sounds & excellent value for money.
-
Get "Easy to build" sheds & plenty of powertools.
-
I think it's just a jam that some sesh musicians was having. Pretty funky, but not a scoob what it could be.
-
I've always been a 4 string player, but I do venture up the neck quite a lot & 2 of our songs I actually play the top G (24th fret on G). I also use an octaver & recently found myself using notes below what the open E would be (mainly C & D) so I think a 6 string would be to my advantage. It would allow me to get the higher notes with less movement & also to play those lower notes on songs that I don't want the bass to sound synth like. My band is a "folk"' band (the word "folk" being used verrrry loosely!) with a singer/guitarist & a mandolinist/whistle player, so I'll play a lot of melodies on parts that don't warrant a bassline.
-
Ahh, I see. So your a musician, not just a guitarist?
-
A guitarist? But....... Basschat? Welcome to the show!

I'll make the shortlist short. Ibanez SR-1000E '90 My only working bass. Bought it new & started out as a metallic black instrument. Llast summer I stripped it to the wood & gave it an oil & wax. Recently changed it from active electronics to passive (simple volume, pick up blend & tone). Strung with TI Jazz flats. Undergoing some slight mods. Positives: Great sound from it. The neck pick up can get a great P tone & the bridge gets that burpy Jazz tone. Slim neck that's easy to move around on. Ergonomic & light body. Reliable. Negatives: if I hold a Bm at the 7th fret, it buzzes. Even if I just hold the E & G strings at the 7th fret & play a note on either, it buzzes! Change a fret & it's fine (audience don't hear it though). Bridge broke, so now have an old fender style bridge off of my Vox bass on it. I've tried quite a few other basses in my time, but never played anything that I thought could replace the Ibby. Though I'm gassing for a fretless 5/6 string.
