1. Well I was about to play my bass on Thursday, plugged it in and........... Nothing! Tried plugging it into the amp direct with a few different leads & still nowt. So I thought "Must be the battery". Nope. Band practice over then. Opened it up the next day & discovered a power wire off. Took the electronics out to solder it back together & another wire popped off! Soldered them on & another 3 popped off! Soldered them on & another couple fell off (it is a 20 odd year old bass, but c'mon!). Put it all back together &...... Nothing! Went over everything to check it was all correct (using reference photos that I took last year before stripping the bass) & all was fine. After many hours of messing about I've ended up buying 2 new pots & a capacitor & wiring the bass up as passive. Funny thing is, it doesn't seem any quieter than it did as an active bass. Need to test this at volume of course, but at home... I always thought that an active bass gave a MUCH hotter signal than passive. Could it be because I'm using active pick ups? I'm not powering them (I was gonna power it Fender stylee). Now I have an extra hole on the body from where the EQ switch was, but I have a plan! I've ordered a 100k pot & some other goodies from Maplin & gonna make it a control knob for the Moogs. So if I want, I can have it so I can add funky auto wah when I'm not using the exp pedal to control cutoff on the LPF or control the LFO rate on the Bass Murf. Will let you know how I get on with that one too.
2. Different sized capacitor too maybe?
3. If you've got a decent sense of timing & able to play for an hour or two at home along to your fave rock compilation, then your own confidence is the only thing that could hold you back (or not having the gear ). The majority of the pub ain't gonna notice the odd mistake (that includes the rest of the band too) unless you do something bad.
4. I have one of those combos you're talking about. The 2x10. However, it only looks like that if you have it sitting horizontally. Mine sits vertically, so looks even funnier!
5. I got my pedalboard/case from Spider Engineering (I think they're known as Flightcase Warehouse). They make flightcases to your size, so if you wanted to go the same style of route where teh board is part of the lid (rather than a wedge that you lift out) then might be worth checking them out. Here's the webby. They do quite a lot of other useful stuff too.
6. If you're looking for a good filter & don't mind spending a little more, then look at the moog MF101 & get an expression pedal for it.
7. If they was made in the UK, then I could understand (to an extent, as we usually make crap). But it's probably made in China, therefore you're not really buying British! Markbass is Italian & made in Italy. If you can get an LM & a Barefaced cab, I can't see you needing anything else amp/cab wise for some time.
8. If it's an 8Ω cab, then you can add another 8Ω cab. If it's a 4Ω cab, then no. I'm with Phil & Dirk re: 2x10s.
9. I've got the Boss CE-2 on my board (not the CE-2B) & it does a fine job. Have a look at the new Akai pedals. They make an analogue delay for £59!
10.
Purpose built flats/apartments will have concrete floors on all levels to comply with fire regs etc.
Not all Mine's an old stone built Victorian apartment with wooden beams & a couple of layers of wooden planks.
11. Tell your neighbour to let you know if it's ever too loud & just be aware of what time it is when playing (maybe roll teh lower frequencies off). Gramma pad or Auralex foam is a good move too. I have a downstairs neighbour & I use my gear all the time. 2x10 sits on some Auralex foam that's on top of a chest of drawers. The only time he's complained about the noise is when I was playing the acousic in the bedroom (not plugged in & fingerpicking stylee too! ).
12. Do you play through the PA? If so, then you're only gonna need something for hearing yourself. Important question... What's your budget? I'm guessing around £4-500? If so, go in the "Amps for sale" section on here as you'll get a good set up for not too much outlay.
13.
I know they were a budget Marshall range but I was surprised to find Jim putting his name to these cabs.
It wasn't Jim, it was these guys...
14.
Right, good suggestion, I'll certainly give this a go. Thanks everyone for your feedback so far. Incidentally, is the problem I'm having quite common or am I experiencing something rather unique in finding a muddiness at various points on the stage. The sound outfront seems to much much cleaner.
The mixed sounds on stage are possibly due to the different sized soundwaves coming from the 15 & the 10s. At different points on the stage you'll get boosts or cuts in certain frequencies as they move through the air at different speeds. A wee read on Barefaced's or Bill Fitzmaurice's websites would explain this a bit better than I can.
15.
I think xgsjx is thinking of the Big Twin, the Super 12 is the middly aggressive rock cab (which is great for that, but isn't epic lows).

It's actually a Big Twin. Which is the one to go for if you still want the high end, even the one without the tweeter. It does him well in the dub and sub stuff he does.
You guys are right. I think because it's loaded with 12's is why I thought it was the Super 12.
16. Put your 102 on it's end so the speakers are vertical. I found this makes a huge difference to the spread on stage (I have the same combo). You could still use a 2nd small combo from the DI on the back of the 102 head & put it on stage (maybe facing the band from the front, if there's room).
17. Have a look at the Super 12. Pantherairsoft plays in a Dubstep/electronica band & says it has phenomenal low end (now I want one! )
18. For that sort of money, have you considered the lightweight options? There's Kampera KVB800 (which is only a couple of hundred more than the Ashdown & weighs 12.7 kg) & the MarkBass TTE500 (which is cheaper, lighter still at 6 kg & looks similar to the BTA) to name just two.
19. You could maybe make it into a small dub rig? Try a cable with a mono 1/4 jack on one end (plugged into your bass) & a single RCA on the other (to plug the bass into the amp where you would normally take an RCA from the head) & see how you get on. You might need a pre amp of some sort if your bass is passive.
20. £400 would also get you a 2nd hand LMII & a 1/2 decent 2x10 or 1x15. I personally wouldn't go the 4x10 route (but it is down to personal taste & the narrower dispersion). If you can push that extra £100, there's an even bigger choice.
21. Most HiFi bass gear (Not stuff like Ashdown or Ampeg) covers the full range & is very similar to PA. So yes, either an active PA cab or something like the MB 102 that JTUK suggests.
22.
Anyone heard any updates on the Barefaced '69er? It's a cab I very much want to try!
Is it based on the rear parcel shelf of a teenager's car?
23. Nice one. I'll get across & have a read in a wee bit.
24.
IMO and always sounds as if it is struggling when up against a full band.
Is that the 112 that you're referring to? I've never had this with the 2x10 combo.
25. My LMII is 500w @ 4Ω. 600w is the power consumption. I'm off to buy a 2000w hairdryer for the Mrs. Loud, but nowhere as loud as my LMII.
