1. So you're saying he made a good thread & then bought a crap combo!
2.
Ahem, what about the palace in Perth, "Skoon"? Hang on I'm getting déjà vu here.
Ahh, but Scone Palace isn't in Perth, it's in Scone (pronounced Skoon). To clear up your Bass dilemma, here's how it is said... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43YGbhwBHds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgUoLrS5tjc Happy now?
3. +1 on learning to read music. It's good to learn songs by ear & then check the bits you're not sure of against the written piece (online TABs that are accurate are a rarity) but getting the sheet music or the score for the album is a good thing. Listen to me saying this. The man who started off reading music from a young age & for the past 5 years has been using online tabs! Saying that, I only look up chords & make my own bassline from there as we don't do "tribute" covers, but rework a song if we decide to cover it or use the tab as a reference if there's something I can't hear, though I prefer using youtube for the more complex basslines (I got to learn Sir Duke from the choob). But yeah! Well done on attempting to learn by ear. It should be a musician's first port of call & is the most accurate way to learn a piece. A bit like singing really, if you get the words on line & don't listen to the words in the song, you could be singing anything. Like this guy does... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dptyqVjt1nc&feature=related
4. & the 4Ω cab would probably only put out 3 db more than the 8Ω equivalent.
5.
Is this general advise or just for Kiwi?
It should work for anyone.
I tried that already but couldn't see myself in the shop windows properly.
But did it work???
6.
Oh god, its been 2 hours already. Can anyone help me in my hour of need...?
I hope I'm not too late! What you need to do is stand up on a desk or table in public, pull the front of your T-shirt up over your head, put your elbows up & put your thumbs under your oxters & then ping your nipples whilst shouting "Bring the Milk". Good luck.
7. Nice. I really like Business Step. Do you put the bass through the Nord?
8. I've no idea. But I was wondering where you'd went to. Good to hear you're alive & well.
9. Humpalumpa?
10. Get yourself a small mixer or cheap multi fx box, plug your bass into it & take the stereo outs into the HiFi & off you go.
11. I've tried using the effects loop on my amp a few times & there's no benefit unless I switch the jumper to have clean & effected blended (which I don't want) or have an extra wire running across the stage. I don't use a compressor. Tried a few, but might get another one sometime in the future.
12.
Read my blog on signal chain basics (link in signature) - shameless plug. Start at part one and you'll just in time for me to publish part 4 tomorrow
This blog is well worth reading! Brilliant run down of what things do.
13. It really depends on what fx you're using on the M5 & what sound you're after. If you're using delay/reverb/chorus type fx, then I'd do what Mike says. If you're using octave or synth fx, I'd put it int he same order but with the M5 in front of the Sansamp. But play about, that's half the fun!
14.
Have you considered two 2X10 cabs instead of one 4X10...? You get more flexibility (small gigs or rehearsals you can just take one), each cab will be much lighter than a 4X10 and, if you vertically stack them, they will sound way better. Just a thought...
What he says. Couple of 2x10 cabs. Or how about a Barefaced cab?
15. The daily fail can certainly pull up a good story & then fill it with nonsense! Toilet paper for your chin Mr Thornhill?
16. Surprised no one has mentioned your user name to try! MarkBass do some brilliant amps well within your budget. How about the TTE-500?
17. If that's Roqsolid, they did mine too. Brilliant service & quality product. Just buy one & get an amp to fit.
18.
In the guitar world, it is pretty much accepted as fact that time-based effects (eg. delay and reverb) sound so much nicer AFTER any distortion/overdrive/fuzz. So, it doesn't matter where your dist/OD/fuzz is being generated, whether by pedals or in your amp's pre-amp, try and get your delay after it. If you are playing into a clean amp, and getting all your dirt from pedals, then simply put your delay as the last pedal in the chain. That will ensure that all dirt is generated before the delay. If you are getting at least some of your dirt from your amp's pre-amp, then put your delay in the FX loop, which in virtually every amp known to man, will be after the pre-amp in the amp's circuit. If you think about what will happen when you put a delayed signal into a dirt box, you can see how it might sound a bit odd, as the (quieter) trails will not be as "dirty" as the initial tone. The quietest trails may even be completely clean. So you end up with a dirty first note, with all subsequent delays getting cleaner and cleaner. For most people, this is nowhere near as musical sounding as when the initial note AND the trails have the same amount of dirt. There are still, of course, some old school officionados who still maintain that putting the delay before a dirty amp is the best way, but that is mainly because some vintage guitar/bass visionary did it "back in the day" when amps had no FX loops. Due to the design of amps back then, there were rarely huge amounts of dirt being used TBH. Personally, I still think it sounds sh1t like that.
I agree that the norm would be to put it at the end, but if he's going through a wad of dirt boxes then it's still getting a dirty signal. Experimentation is the way forward!
19.
Sorry, only scary monsters below 5'5" allowed. Health & Safety.
I knew that would be the sticking point!
20. Damn, I was gonna offer our services. But, we're probably a bit weird. Very folky/country/bluesy/electronca stuff. We've got a 6 foot scary monster that plays spoons!
21. I believe they're actually.... Crap.
22. I wouldn't have thought it would have made as much a difference as that. Part due to the fact that it's getting pushed by 1/2 the power that the 2x10 combo is & although it will make some sort of a difference, would it not depend on the sensitivity & so on of the ext cab? Edited to tidy up grandma
23.
No, no noooooo!!! where do you get that final "ff" from!!!??? See, had the Armada (I leave the "Invincible" part of the name out, as it still hurts a bit ) been successful, you could all pronounce these names very easily Useless fact: Ibanez is itself wrong. It should have been "Ibañez" (alt-164 and alt-165, children) I guess they were out of ~s when they first printed the name... PS: and it's not "eye - bah..." but "ib -..." PS: I'm off to start a new thread about how to order beers correctly in Madrid. Don't make the mistake an English friend of mine made when all she wanted was a "caña"
A bloke down the pub said that Spanish speak spoke "z" as "th" as in "chorizo" (which apparently is pronounced "choreetho"), so it must be true! The name "Ibanez" is Spanish & I've read in tha past it being pronounced Ee Bahn Yes, Ee Ban Eth & I Bun Ease. However, as some might not know, Ibanez isn't a Spanish company (shock, horror)! Although the company started off life as a book shop owned by Hoshino Gakki & became an importer of Spanish stringed instruments from a luthier called Salvador Ibáñez. In the late 50s Hoshino Gakki then went on to make copies of guitars under the Ibanez banner & then in the 70s designed their own instruments (after a lawsuit from Gibson). So are you saying that it should be pronounced "ihb - an - ess"? & more importantly, has anyone told Steve Vai? He pronounces it Eye Bun Ez. & is it Gibsun or Jibsun?
