I'd rather talk about gear than talk about scales.
Back on topic, I think it depends on the kind of music you're playing (I haven't read all the pages so sorry if I repeat something). If you play bass in the traditional sense, then gear won't make a bad player good (but I agree that better quality gear being easier to play should help). If you play bass that relies on effects for the sound, then a budget bass plugged straight in isn't gonna make very good dubstep (or whatever style you choose there). I've used the same bass for 20+ years & wouldn't change it (although I do want a fretless 5/6). I have however, changed my gear that I put it through considerably. Some songs I play require my playing ability, some rely on me controlling my effects & playing a very simple bassline with my fingers. Like I say, it depends on the music.

I'd love one of these bad boys with the hot hand. Could get some brilliant sounds & textures mixing this with the moog LPF! GAS again. Well, don't just sit there reading my drivel, get you recording gear out & make a video!

I can reccommend the Bass Murf for choppy sequency stuff (& more), but it is a big box & not cheap, so a bit of a pointless post from me.

I paggered my back @ 25 years ago through trying to lift a video game cabinet out of an amusement arcade on my own (15 & I thought I could lift anything). After that, I learned to lift properly but it still comes back. Last month I was holding one of my moggies, leaned forward to let him down & it just went. So painful I had to take the day off work (which I actually hate doing). This is one of the reasons I like my Ibanez SR, it's @ 8lb. Another good tool on stage is the bar stool (though maybe not for rock/punk). Also my Markbass combo weighs less than most of the heads I've owned!

That's cheered me up at work!

Opinions please, although I know the answer....

I've voted "depending on the player". I had a chap put his double bass through my Markbass 2x10 combo & it was well respected. Sounded sweet too! If you're concerned, you could have the organisers sign a contract that covers any damage to your gear. Or they could hire a rig. -
I think he'd need to remove the head from the combo for that to be a viable option, or sell the combo to fund a head & 2 2x10s.

If you like the sound of your 15", get another one. You'll get more of the same, but louder.

If it's a small venue he often uses hotrods, but not always. You'd actually be surprised at some of the gigs I've done with sub 100 watt combos, really shows that watts doesny = volume (a good example of folk getting hung up on watts is the TC thread, those heads are loud & put out less than 150w into 8 ohms).

Just thought of something! If the chest logo was on the other side, it wouldn't get hidden when playing bass (unless your a lefty).

Count me in. I've been wanting to get my hands on a BC top for yonks.

Candy Apple Red, what colour scratchplate folks?
I have to agree with cream or white or anything bright, but only if it has a maple fingerboard, if it's rosewood then I would go for black. Here is what Candy Apple Red looks with a white p/g
Now if you turned that around & put the body to the top it could be mistaken for a toffee apple (with jaggy bits hanging down) -

Beige or light brown. -
For small gigs I often use a Vox Venue 30 Bass. It's a 30 watt combo with a 12" driver & would do most small venues (depending on how noisy they are though) or acoustic gigs.
-
I often cut the 20hz & 20khz shelfs* (I read about production techniques in a few different mags such as Sound on Sound & Computer Music back in the 80s & 90s) & do this to my electronic music as I like to make some serious subby sounds, but I think it would depend on your bass sound to start with. * Disclaimer, I'm pretty crap at mastering. My hearing has seen better days Though I don't know anyone who could actually hear anything below 20hz or above 20khz.

Smallest was with my old rock band. I knew no one in Perth (still don't know many) so asked my work colleagues if they wanna come to our 1st gig in Perth. 1 turned up. The gig was in a separate room from the bar & a couple of folk started popping through about 5 songs in so we may have max'd 6 at one point. Largest is @ 350-400ish which is what most of my gigs have been.

Something else I've just thought about. Apparanly the shorter the cable, the better the sound quality, so daisy chaining would allow shorter cables. But for the length of cables you need to run from amp outs to both cabs, is it going to make any difference? I doubt anyone would be able to hear it at a gig!

Cheers Shep. I had thought about sending some off somewhere, but no idea what my target would be. Had thought about the video game industry or adverts, but not too sure. I'd enjoy doing some backing tracks, but not sure how much time I can get to sit & write stuff PM me what your ideas are & I'll let you know what I can do.

have you ever taken your bass playing from a singer..
xgsjx replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Quite a few of my basslines follow the timing of the vocals but I harmonise more than go in unison (although there's a few where it sounds great to play in unison). Another thing I like to do occasionally is repeat the last few notes of a vocal part at the end of a bar/section, but I try not to over do this. -
I've put a selection of songs that I've composed over the past 10 or so years onto Soundcloud & wondered if any of you would like to have a listen & give me some feedback? None of the recordings feature any "real" bass on the tracks (though I've used a few of the basslines & other parts in band settings), but I thought I'd share & see if they're good or just ok. I've a cheek to talk about audience sizes, last gig I did in Perth we had an audience of 1 for the first 5 or so songs! Never went back to that venue & never even took payment from the bar (I felt bad as I think they was relying on us bringing an audience, which we don't have in Perth yet).
Never seen what the purpose of the legislation was. Let's be honest, the factors that determine where live music is played will be the size of the room the size of the potential audience and the cost of the band. Most of the venues I play coudln't take more than a 4 piece without there being no room for an audience.
is that your way of saying you have an audience of 1?
He's good, but for me, the bass (unless you go well into the realms of ERBs) will always be trounced by the chapman stick when it comes to tapping
It's very impressive to watch but the only place I envisage the tune is in a porno from the 80s. :

Sorry, you're right. Well Sharkey, shame on you for trying to steal someone else's limelight. You 80s throwback!!!
