1. I asked this Q 3 1/2 years ago. I ended up going for a Markbass 2x10 combo (about £800 at the time) & haven't regretted it once. If you can stretch your budget then there's one or two on here for @ £600-650 in the For Sale section. When I got it I was playing in a loud rock band with 2 guits & had no probs being heard & now play a bit of DnB/Dubstep so lots of subby sounds are required. It's a hell of a lot better than the Trace Elliot 4x10 combo I used prior to it.
2. Is it MDF? That's what my first thoughts was form the pics. How about putting "No More Nails" to the test? I can see it lasting for quite a bit & then one gig, mid song, Poinnnnngg > smack > Ouch! It wouldn't be worth claiming for a £125 bass on your home insurance. Excess & next years increase would cost more than a new HB bass!
3.
Yep. In my originals bands I moved from: Garage Rock (Stooges/MC5 style) evolved into Hard Rock Punk'n'Roll (Misfits/Ramones style) Metal Core In covers I've done everything from light pop to modern metal (Alice In Chains, System Of A Down) but no real direction to that, just trying different things. And I'll play owt if I'm being paid to dep!
Sounds like you've done everything from Rock to Rock
4. Might be better & cheaper going for a Roland VB system rather than spashing out a small fortune on moog Taurus pedals. There was moog T3s in the For Sales for £1250, but I think they're gone. New, they're @ £2k.
5. I started out on the U2/Simple Minds/Fleetwood Mac/The Cure genres, went to rock (Guns n Roses, Metallica, Skid Row, etc), then house & breakbeat (many funky basslines there), listening to things like Jamiroquai & Stevie Wonder & some hiphop along the way, went onto add jazz, DnB & now Dubstep. My bands have kinda followed that theme too. Lojo, I never really got into country/Americana but my current band's main styles is just that. We're a mix of folk/Americana/jazz/blues & whatever else sounds good with a 50 year old Canadian vocalist, banjo, mandolin, spoons (or any other percussion), tin whistle, acoustic guitar & a bit of bass (though my bass sound is getting further & further away from the straight bass sound you'd associate with those styles. Nowadays I enjoy playing anything with a good bass line.
6. I believe Thomann have a very good returns policy, therefore if it's not suitable for you then they take it back. I have a very bass heavy sound & just now I'm only using a MarkBass 2x10 & it's more than capable for the gigs I do (max has been @ 350 folk & played a beer festival & could shift glasses off of tables ), so I think a couple of 2x12s would be more than capable.
7.
Yeah I tried that but it was not a recognised serial number being a custom
Well, that sounds like an excuse to give Mr Clayden a buzz. Have you had a look in Ibanez Register to see if it's there?
8. On the back of the headstock there should be a serial #. Go to http://forum.ibanez.com & post your serial # & someone will give you all the info for it.
9. A few manufacturers are stepping away from (or avoiding) the "4x10 & a 15 is the best" regime & building vertical stacking cabs. TC E & Genz Benz are 2 that instantly come to mind & EBS do a vertical array 4x12.
10. I think you should play your bass with it up as high as it'll go. I don't though. I do the same as Dood, set it up sitting down with the bass how I play sitting down & then adjust the strap so it's in the same position when I stand.
11.
a ) Can I put a bass through it b ) £155
a ) I don't think you can (though you could put your bass through a moog or a Korg MS-20. b ) £155 for a VST version. The original synth was @ £4k back in the early 80s, so you could maybe double that at least!
12. Sounds like either a Square or Pulse wave is what you're trying to produce. A Markbass Supersynth might get you close, Shep should be able to shed some light on that though.
13. That should do Human League synth basslines to a T.
14. Yes. Put the 2x10 vertically & use your ears. If it sounds unhealthy, turn it down.
15. Nice one. I'd love one of his basses One day maybe!
16. So in other words a 2x10 is better for directional on stage monitoring if horizontal & better for backline for the audience & the rest of the band to hear if vertical?
17. I haven't heard the TC rigs, but someone here has just bought one. Maybe worth investigation. If it's the Terror Bass you're after, what about a Barefaced cab to go with it?
18. I'm gonna say avoid the standard 4,6 or 8x10 & get your drivers on the vertical. 2 2x10s or 2x12s or even 2 1x15s stacked vertically would give you a better dispersion (so all of your audience can hear how good it is & not just those standing directly in front of your rig) and give you an excellent sound, depending on what make of cab you go for of couse.
19. I'd say about the same. If you wasn't down the other end of the country I'd let you try my bass to see if they suited you (unless you want to pop up to Perth for a cuppa?).
20. You mean like this?
21. Just weighed my Ibby (for the 1st time too) & it's 8.6lb. It's an Ash body.
22. I've got Tomastik Infeld Jazz 344s & the tension didn't seem any different from the DR Peacocks that I replaced (talk about going from zingy to mellow ). I haven't tried any other flatwounds.
23. Your guitarist could do what I do with my bass combo & put it on it's side.
24. I don't know how the new SRs compare, but my SR1000 started off being used for rock & now gets used for folk, country, jazz & electro (such as house, DnB & dubstep). The powercurve eq has a huge range of sounds.
