1. If you practice & practice until you can play whatever songs you've been practising to a good level, then you have talent. If you practice & practice until you can't play whatever songs you've been practising any more & are still crap, then you have no talent.
2. Add another 1x15 cab (make sure it's 8 ohm & try & get the matching one). Pros = more sound Easier to hear yourself Cons = more to carry I think the pros outwiegh the cons
3. So he's trying to say Dubstep on a fretless sounds like Jaco?
4. What about a Barefaced cab? If I was looking for a cab or two, they'd be on my list. (Alex, what's the commision rate )
5. Would it be possible to tier your boards? You could make a good solid stand that goes along each side & the back of the bottom of the upper board. I'm full of great ideas me!
Get the talent knob to work and I'll buy one off you.
It maybe needs amended to "talentless". I know a few talenless knobs that dont work.
7. As Flyfisher says, in the good ole days a tape sent recorded to yourself & never opened unless needed in court was the way to go. Nowadays it's much easier. Stick it on YouTube/Flickr/Myspace/Whatever & it should have an "Uploaded" date. Negates the "you could have set a different date on your PC" argument (unless there's a hack for tinterweb dates).
8.
Can't you just jack a Porsche at gunpoint or something?
A Porsche? He'd need a Volvo Globetrotter for his gear! Edit: Looks like a mod has had a busy day at work, this sub forum's now pretty full!
9. PJB use 6" drivers in their cabs & don't struggle for bass. Also have a look at what Bill Fitzmaurice does with 10" drivers if you don't believe just one cab designer/builder on here (that's Alex). http://www.billfitzmaurice.com/index.html It's more about cab design & getting the most from a driver than what size of driver is in the cab. In olden days, 4x10s & 1x18s had more bass mainly because they used a bigger cab than a 2x10. Nowadays you'll get just as much bass from a well designed 2x10 or 2x12 & better dispersion (if put vertically).
10. Very nice. I'd love a couple of hours just playing about making sounds! I think the old Roland System 700 was less complex than your board(s).
11. But the problem with the so called "perfect stack", is snake oil. A 4x10 will have a much narrower dispertion as there are vertically aligned drivers pushing soundwaves against each other & adding a different sized driver just adds another problem with different sized soundwaves bouncing off one another. One venue it'll sound great & then another venue with the same settings will sound awful. Keeping all the same sized drivers means you'll get a more consistent sound & stacking them vertically means you'll get a much better dispertion (there's several topics on mixing cabs already). +1 on going to a store. -1 on listening to their "technical" knowledge/sales patter.
12. Markbass might not be to everyone's liking, which is why you should try before you buy. Although saying that, I tried countless combos & amp/cabs before buying the MB without trying it (thanks BC). If you like the sound of your 1x18 & want something to comliment it, another 1x18 is your best option, but like dc2009 says, there's not that many 2 ohm heads (EBS come to mind, so I'd check them out). If you're gonna change cabs then a good 1x15, 2x10 (or 2 2x10s vertically) will give you as much bass as your 1x18.
13.
That's a BIG budget. IMO the markbass heads are terrible, the VLE (some emulator they put in) is like a crap-knob to my ears, I have to use one at my practice room, not only is it fairly short on power but I'm never impressed with the sound using any of my basses, and that's through tc electronics and hartke cabs so it's not like the rest of the rig is bad. Avoid markbass would be my recommendation. Never had a proper go on an Orange but give it a try and see. I'd heartily recommend trying Gallien Krueger though, especially for that sort of money.
That seems very strange that it's short on power. There might be a problem with it (or one of the cabs) as "short on power" is not something I've come across on mine or anyone else's. I use the MB 2x10 combo & it's probably the loudest 2x10 combo (or any combo) I've ever played through & that's at 8Ω. If the OP is using a 4Ω 18" he's gonna be moving a lot of air. The VLE & VPF are not to everyone's taste & both do different things. I like the VLE for taking away a little of the "HiFi" sound. A wee thought I've had, is the head going through TC & Hartke cabs together & are they different sized drivers? Also is it the Hartke aluminium cones? Mixed cones (size, construction, etc) can have negative effects as they put out different sized soundwaves which affect each other. I'd try changing the head in the rehearsal room & see if that helps, or try just one of the cabs with the MB head.
14. Hercules hangy grabby guitar stand needed. I've stripped my bass as it had more chips than McDs. Never stripped the headstock tho as it's got character.
15. Rehearsal room for the band is the best place to get everything set up for gigs.
16. I like the Markbass LMII but there's many good amps in your budget. The Orange is a popular wee amp also but from what I've heard, it only does one sound & that is overdriven (albeit very good at it). If I want OD, I add it via a pedal. Go to a shop & try, try, try!
17. Man, I wish it didn't take soooo long to get down (& cost so much) so I could be there! Have a good bash
18. Try rolling the Treble, Mid & Bass down on the head if you can't turn the volume down on your bass.
19. Here's where I got it from.
20. Life During Wartime is a fairly simple bassline. It's in A during the Verse & E during the Chorus. Most of the verse uses A A EGE & the run at the end is just D C B G. Chorus goes E (open string) BDE. Got this from listening to a clip on youtube as my mate has my Talking Heads songbook. Hope that helps.
21. I'd rather pop a black capo on than play all the wrong chords. With metal bands tho, it's usually power chords & riffs. Why would you need a capo to play E5, G5 & Bb5 (all my fave Nuclear Assault songs use those 3 chords). Anyhoo, I wasn't saying his guitarists should use capos. I was suggesting he try one as a visual aide if the song is transposed up a semi or 2. The bassist from Kings of Leon has used a capo live (ok, so they're pop rock). Why he did, I do not know. Maybe for the same reason?
22. Sorry Bode, being a bit of a guitarist I know that playing an A with the capo on the 2 (a G position) sounds different from playing an A in the normal non capo position. Same goes for many chords. Also there's many songs that sound completely different played both with and without a capo. RE: my other comment. I don't use a capo on my bass, but if someone is struggling to move everything up a fret or two, then it might be a good visual aide.
23. I pretty much agree with you there Doddy. The only times I've tuned to Eb Ab Db Gb has been when I was in a covers band & everyone else was (Never had a 5er).
24. We usually play a jammed version of one of our songs. Each of us has a little time & then a quick run together to make sure we're not muddy or messy & then we do a little impov. Actually, that sounds like my entire last gig!
25. Drop D is usually the only detune I use. I generally don't have a problem playing something that was in G but moved to A, but it's nice to have a little warning. Another thing that can help is popping a capo on the 1st or 2nd fret. I know, what's the point of a capo on a bass. It's a mental thing. Your eyes see the capo as the nut & everything moves from there (or is that just if you play guitar as well?).
