Looking forward to hearing the finished result. I'm guessing there's quite a bit of subby movement there. In clip 2 it looks like the screen is rippling from the vibrations.

The bassist who originally got me into bass is classed as a very laclusture bassist by some. He may not play fast technical pieces (& have no idea if he can), but he has done some brilliant melodic & easy to play basslines. That's Adam Clayton. I'm not jealous of any bassist, regardless of their abilities or how famous they are. I might get frustrated that I can't double thumb like Wooton or slap like King or tap like Claypool, but that's because I haven't got their skills or put in the effort.
On a side note, I used to have a sustain pedal. I've never actually used it on a gig, as it was a great way to get screeching feedback after a few seconds. It used the guitar signal level to light an LED, and had a pre-amp controlled by a light-dependant resistor. So the more the signal decayed, the dimmer the LED got, and the more boost from the pre-amp. And when you didn't play at all, it sat there loudly hissing. It was complete rubbish really
Was it the Boss one? I tried one of those & after a couple of hours of tinkering & trying to make it useable, handed it back.

Ashdown amps nicked in Reading CCTV footage of thief
xgsjx replied to jonno1981's topic in Amps and Cabs
He's probably right! As usual, it's only us bassists looking. I dare say most folk who use the studio are hoping the MAG heads are never found. They should make it so if you steal, you get a finger cut off. This way if a thief persists, he can only go so far. -
For some reason, I don't actually consider the possibility that I will break the neck of a bass as part of my assessment of whether to buy it or not. Am I unusual in not having broken the neck of any of my basses?
Snap.
It's merely a backing track. I've heard lots worse.
I've heard worse too Still doesn't make it any better! Maybe if he got rid of the crappy keyboard sounds & had an instrument doing something contrary to that riff, it'd sound better. & then chuck some vocals over it, & maybe change the drums a bit.

Nice bit of playing. The song itself is pants tho.

In seconds, it depends on the tempo. 120 BPM = 2 seconds. A good sustain is needed for a good 80s ballad.

I started off a keys player & to me sustain is a set level the note will play for until the note is released. Bass guitar notes decay or release, depending on how you look at it. Decay being how quickly a note fades to the sustain level when played (on bass that level is 0 ) & release is how long a note lasts after being released, they don't sustain. However, I think that when someone is referring to the length of sustain in relation to bass, they do mean the decay/release time & I accept it as that. I would like a bass that would hold a sustained note as long as it was fretted, but I believe these are called synths

Please recommend me a lightweight versatile bass guitar

Another option to look at is the Ibanez SR basses, they're pretty light (compared to a good few other basses I've played anyway) & have a huge range of tones. -
Just finished learning Sir Duke last night. I'd been wanting to learn it for ages & never got time, but a day off with not much else to do other than lay tiles in bathroom. In between that I've been learning I Wish (also by Stevie Wonder) & just need to run over it as I've learned the 2 main parts. Good fun songs, but I'm now sick of hearing them!

Here's how my bolt on access is. Fair enough it only comes out a small amount & the neck is a bit longer than the fretboard, but it lets you see how it is curved & I don't have any troubles getting to the 24th fret.
-
I don't see why the heel couldn't get carved to a slope. Retaining the depth at the top side & down to about 8mm at the bottom with a curved edge. I was having a look on google but couldn't find a good pic, so I'll get a pic of mine after work so you can see how the heel is on my bolt on.

That's not a heel, that's a spare neck!

What's the most you have ever spent on....

I don't know how you can play with those things. I have one & the only thing it gets used for is dunting off the guitards napper when he's too loud! I'm a .78mm man -

I recall spending a couple of quid on some useless 3 mm thick lump of plastic about 10-15 years ago. Nowadays it's about 75p max. & they get used on guitar more than bass (though there is a couple of songs that I do use em on). -
Budget bolt on. My Ibby is a bolt on neck & in the past 20+ years I've never had any trouble getting access to the dusty end (& I actually have a few songs that use the 24th fret). I haven't compared this to a set neck or a straight thru job either, but having played a straight thru before, it wasn't something that had been an issue so never paid attention to access (both fine for 24th access). Doesn't help you on the 8/12 string version though.

We have a Trantec mic/transmitter/receiver set that was @ £150 & seems decent enough for the money (Certainly a good deal better than KAM, having some of their guff forced upon me). Sennheiser & Shure are two of the biggest brands, but what you'll get for £150, I don't know. Might be paying for a name at that price?

This kinda goes down the route I'm working on. I split the signal with the bass murf (which puts different frequencies to each channel), one channel goes thru a heavy amount of chorus, the other goes thru some overdrive & into the mf-101 & then sum them with a small mixer. I plan on getting an octaver & maybe a phase or pitch shifter to further fatten up & get more synth like tones. I don't know if this sounds anything like the Taurus tho. What about an E bow for the long notes? I've never used one, but it might be an option.
-
Not cheap. But if it works like I think it does, then it's cheaper than adding another cab to get that extra volume.
I'm sorry but just can't hear any difference in tone or sound - yes the speakers move less but really so what?
If you're getting all the same sound & your speakers are moving less, then they ain't working as hard. This means you can turn up the bass or volume further & not be putting as much stress on your drivers, thus increasing your headroom. Actually, I think I want one now! That'll be my purchase after the octaver. How much are they?

I wonder if he makes a tweakable version where you can move the cut off up or down by @ 10hz? So if you need some more low rumbles for your dub sounds & you have the subs then you could cut off below 20-25hz, or if you go for a more jazz/punk tone, take the cut off to @ 40hz. On 2nd thoughts, if you have the subs you won't need one.

You should go onto Bill's website & have a look at cabs there & then get a set of plans to give to your techy for him to build. It would be a much better option than a 15" with a 6". Here's his website. The Omni cabs get a lot of love on here & Talkbass.

It cuts everything below 30Hz. Your cabs probably wont make much use of the stuff below 35-40Hz. This could effectively allow you to produce more useable bass as the drivers wouldn't be straining from trying to cope with unused frequencies.
