1. I'd say the Markbass & you can put a tube pre pedal in your line if needed.
2. Are you in a band? If not, join one (or start your own). Don't ignore the advice about getting lessons as they will help you big time. Being in a band will improve your skills, especially an originals band. I've looked at things I could play a few years apart & there's a huge difference. Being able to read the rest of the band when having a jam is a skill that can't be taught. Also like a few have said, when we don't see change we think we're not learning. A few months back I started learning to double thumb & was rubbish, now without really noticing I'm much better at it (still no Vic) & when I first saw double thumbing & tried a little & thought to myself "I wish I could play like that"! I still can't, but I'm getting there one day at a time.
3. He might turn up late for soundchecks but at least he'll rehearse & work hard.
4. I was watching some of their videos a few mumphs back & the Hot Hand sensor thingybob looks pretty cool. If I hadn't bought the moog it would be a possible contender for a space on my board.
5.
The first part... very little difference (iirc the LMII puts out 300w @ 8ohms). The second part... x2 8ohm cabs with hypothetically double the number of drivers as a single 4ohm cab (I am assuming here that you aren't talking about comparisons between say a 4x10 4 ohm cab and a pair of 1x10 cabs or something equally mismatched) will certainly move more air and would be my preferred option. However, if you are talking about comparisons between say a single 2x12 4 ohm cab and a pair of 1x12's @ a combined ohmage of 4 ohms then I wouldn't say there'd be much difference ESPECIALLY if you are comparing cabs from the same manufacturer (Aggie DB212 v Aggie DB112 x2).
It is @ 300w - 8Ω. My 2nd part was all cabs being identicle specs bar ohmage (wasn't intended to be a question tho ).
6. Here's a Q... If you a LM250 & an LMII & you put a 2x10 4Ω cab on the LM250 & the same make & model of cab, but 8Ω on the LMII, would there be any noticeable differences (I know the LMII puts out more than 250w @ 8Ω, but is it gonna make a noticeable difference)? I'm guessing yes as the LMII will still have that little more. So best idea would be to sell the hypothetical 4Ω cab & get another identical 8Ω one so more air can be moved!
7. I started off a keys player when I was a kid. My folks bought me a bontempi organ when I was 5 & every Christmas after that I got a better keyboard until I started getting into synths (old Korgs & such gubbins). When I was 12 me, my dad & my wee bro went to a music shop for me to buy a synth. He also came out with a cheap acoustic guitar which he played about with for about a week & then gave me it. I played basslines on it & then decided to talk my best friend into taking up guitar & I bought a bass about 1 1/2 years later & have never looked back. I could have easily played the basslines on a synth, but for me there's something more satisfying about playing bass. I learned how to play guitar properly too
8.
Wow, that after looks the dogs.

if I understand this turn of phrase correctly, then +1
Thanks guys. I actually got a surprise at the wood when I stripped it. I was 1/2 expecting to be painting the bass (or at least covering it in silver leaf). My original trade is a signwriter & my bro & dad still are, so no probs with laquering etc. Looking forward to giving it a wax. I just so happen to have a bag of bees wax pellets.
9. When I was looking for what sort of oil to use on wood when refinishing my bass I found quite a few articles advising not to use olive oil as it will rot the wood eventually (something about it not being a preserving oil) & also not to use neat food oils such as lemon oil on fretboards. I can't say whether or not they are right tho, so decided to go with Danish oil. I rubbed my fretboard back & gave it a couple of coats of Danish oil. Has a dull sheen to it which I like.
10. I do believe he has played with quite a lot of mainstream known artists. Anyway, church IS a proper music venue
11. I've got an SR1000 as well! Bought it as a rock bass way back in 1990 & has been my main bass ever since. My current band is a 3-5 piece that do a mix of blues, folk, funk, jazz & anything else that doesn't fit & I also play bass occasionally at church (if I'm not on guitar duty). I've since stripped it down to the wood & oiled it & took it away from the "Rock" image. Here's a before... & here's the after... Still needs a waxing & a better pic than a phone one. Link to the process. Sound wise, I can get anything from mid focused sounds that cut thru to deep dubby bassy sounds (I've put flatwounds on to get more synth like tones). Unfortunately I've no idea how the newer ones are with the soapbar p/ups but if they're 1/2 as flexible as this, then you wont be disappointed.
12. I've seen that a good few times now & never fails to make me smile like he does (especially at the wee pause at the end)
13. That is a sad story Rich. It is disappointing when the "older church goers" don't want anything to do with the new & just want a "religion" rather than to know God. It's even sadder that these poor folk drive away the younger generations who do have an interest in getting to know about God, go to a church & then after a short while leave & lose that interest they had. I used to go with my folks to a similar style of church when I was a kid. Became a teenager & never went back other than the occasional visit at Easter every 5-6 years. Then about 18 months ago the other 1/2 got in touch with some old friends that she hadn't seen for @ 10 years & ended up with us joining 2 of them at a house group (kind of a bible study) which then resulted in me & her getting saved. We never went to any churches to start with & then about 4 months later the house group had gotten too big to be held in a house, so our church was formed. Yes we do hymns like Amazing Grace & I Exalt Thee, but we mainly do contemporary worship songs with just the occasional hymn & we have been getting a lot of interest from the younger generation (teenagers) wanting to know more of God, 4 of which have became Christians in this past fortnight. Anyway, back on topic. Never got to play bass at church all weekend! I did have fun playing g****ar thru my pedal board tho. Distorted wah on an acoustic is an interesting image!
14. SR-800?
15. Ibanez Soundear should tick all your boxes. P/J (or soapbars, depending on model), 24 frets, slim neck, great sound, rock image. I have an SR1000 (not for sale, so not a plug) which I've had since new from 1990 & has been my main bass since then & you can pick up 2nd hand ibbys for a decent price.
16. There's many guitar o/d pedals that work well on bass, infact many of the ones you find mentioned on here are actually guitar pedals. For wah I can recommend the moog mf-101 (again!). Tho it is a little dearer than the ones you have mentioned, it works very well on both (I suppose it was originally designed for synth as it's based on the LPF from a minimoog). I play both guitar & bass & use my board on both which comprises of a moog Bass Murf (makes some lovely swooshy sounds on the geetah), a PSK super distortion (cheap piece of 80s plastic which I'm actually finding a use for), a Boss CE-2 chorus & the moog mf-101. I used my acoustic thru this board last night & got some great results. Best thing i can advise is to get to a decent music shop & have a play about & see what suits you.
17. Just DON'T end up like this!
18. +1 I went to the ibanez forum a few years back & gave them the SN from my SR1000e & got told everything except what colour it is.
19. What about some manring? No, that's not an offer.
20.
There was one on Talkbass but the opposing Christians banned it. Studies have shown that in the US atheism is more hated than either muslims, blacks or homosexuals. A number of states even have added a requirement to their constitutions that atheists can not hold public office.
Now that's not very Christian of them!
21.
I'm not remotely religious, but I see this as no different to Fishing Bassists, Cross-stitching Bassists, Poodle-Fancying Bassists. As long as no-one tries to force cross-stitch on me, everyone is free to do as they wish. And - what a nice, challenging, but respectful thread.
Would that be Bass Fishing Bassists & if so, what would be in the Bass for sale section? It's only trouble free because PeteAcademy hasn't gotten involved! Look at all the trouble & grief he started with his Daffodils thread!!!
22. Another tip for faster tapping pieces where you need a heavier touch is to put your middle finger over the nail of your index finger (I learned that one from a Billy Sheehan book back in the early 90s). Tho this method might not suit more intricate pieces unless you can do the same with the next two fingers!
23.
This is an honest, questioning post, NOT trolling. Why does there seem to be a need for being a "Christian ......." (insert whatever here). I have recently seen a "Christian Motorbike Club" (out on a Sunday BTW), and this morning pulled up in a car park next to a car plastered in Christian stickers, including "Christian Surfers". Now we have "Christian Bass Players". There doesn't seem to be the need for atheist, Jewish or Muslim versions of these groups, why the need to create this segregation?
I get where you're coming from. I think the "Christian whatever clubs" are really just fellow Christians looking to find any like minded folk & as the OP says, it's not really different to any others (eg: Fender appreciation thread) & I wouldn't segregate myself from anyone else on this (or any other) forum. I joined BC well before I became a Christian & could be argued that by joining BC, I have dingyed all the other musicians, tho I would argue I haven't Ancient Mariner did previously post a topic with the title "Worship Bay Splayers". At the end of the day I'm glad to say I'm a member on Basschat & despite all the differing beliefs on here, it's a great community to be amongst.
24.
This took some doing at our gaff... Great line to play.
I'm looking forward to playing this song one day, but at present the guitarist (other than me) can only strum chords & plays a 12 string acoustic. The bass solo is quality too.
I'd never go near a church but it does interest me as to the way you do a church gig, it seems like there is A LOT of audience participation, does that put you off?
Audience participation is really a big part of worship & only serves to make what is played more meaningful. It's all about worshiping God & not about the congregation or how good the band are, tho these things do help. Funny you calling it a gig. I did too when I first got saved.
25. Ideally, you should go & try all the amps out (thru your own cab if poss) & then get what you find suits you. I'd also look at a 2nd hand LMII or Dave's SA450 for that extra £50, they're definitely worth it.
