1.
do you know penguin is spelt penguin, not pengueng? justpointingthatout....
I know So, are you thinking of penguins or basses?
Just ask her with she needs so many pairs of shoes, always works for me.
I would, but she's only got 3 pairs of shoes & I have 5 pairs
2. After reading the Fender thread, Happy Jack's P bass thread & a couple of other threads, I thought I'd pose the question that the Mrs asked me last night whilst I was oiling my bass's body (the Mrs wouldn't let me rub Danish oil on her body, so it had to be)... What makes a high end bass worth the money & where's the difference to justify it over a good sub £1000 (or even a good sub £500) job? Is a £1300 Fender P 5 stringer as good as a £1300 Dingwall Combustion & is a £2k+ "copy" P bass from the likes of Overwater or Sadowsky any better than a Fender P & actually worth the difference? & why do I need another bass when I'm happy with my Ibby (other than wanting 5 strings & no frets)? Well? Hopefully with the right ammo I'll talk her into letting me get a custom made Ritter Raptor
3. If you want to get rid of the chance of pink, spray the whole bass in a matt grey undercoat.
4. I stripped the poly finish from my bass with a gas blowtorch & a paint stripper. I heated the paint up gently (torch on lowest, unless you like scorched wood) & gently scraped with scraper. I then did the same again with the shellac that was under the paint & sanded the body down smooth with 40 grit, then 70, 120 & finally with 240 grit sandpaper & now in the process of coating the ash body in Danish oil (it reeks, but looks good!) I'm planning on doing 2-3 coats per day for the following 4-5 days (or whenever I get bored of not being able to play it). THen I'm gonna leave it for a week & then coat it with bees wax. I'm still toying with the idea of adding some silver leaf, aluminium paint or some other colour to a section of the body. If you can spraypaint, then finishing a bass isn't gonna be hard.
5. Ok, not a complete choob amp, but what about a Markbass or Genz Benz with a tube pre?
6. It really depends what sort of sound you're after. I like my bass with a filter (sometimes auto, sometimes with a pedal), a little drive, some kinda flanger (or filter) sweep & either a little slow chorus or loads of fast chorus. I want an octaver as well. My advice to anyone new to effects is get a multi fx pedal (zoom, line 6 & roland are all good starters). This way you'll find out what kind of fx you're going to use & don't end up spending money on things that you never use & bought just because it had a funny name or someone who plays a completely different style suggested it.
7. Very nice. Only thing I'm not keen on is the prominence of the string tap, but that's a personal opinion.
8. I'm refinishing mine myself. After mucho thought, I'm going with tung oil. Hope it looks good when I'm done.
9. Flat here with a little VPF & a little more VLE. I may do slight adjustments to suit venues if needed.
10. Oh, another thought is the Bose Array Thingybob. A church I visit now & again has one for the band & it sounds pretty good, but I think they're over your budget new. S/H maybe??? Again, what about BFM? (Bill, mind my commission )
11. TB is off line. Was that thread that stupid?
12. For outdoor stuff, I've always been happy with the sound of Peavey HiSys or EV cabs. For indoors, I recently heard a DAS pa system & sounded very nice. But, I would have thought the best bang for buck would be to build some BFM tops & subs?
13. Instead of wasting your money, could I point you here? Take a look around & you'll get a much better rig for the same money.
14. If you can, get all the backline (Bass & guitar amps, etc) behind everyone & then it's a case of making some adjustments to suit the venue you're playing in. It's really as simple as that & the PA is just to project everything better to the audience. I've played many gigs with no PA other than a small vocal PA. If your bass was going thru the PA & the guitars wasn't, then it may have been a case of not being able to hear one another properly.
15. If you're going down the combo route, then I can recommend the Markbass CMD 102p as being light, loud & sounding way bigger than a 2x10 combo. I used it in a noisy originals rock band with 2 guitarists & a drummer who knew not what quiet meant & could easily be heard. You can always add another 2x10 if needed. If going for s/h, then you might be able to get the combo & cab for @ £1000-1100. I had a Trace Elliott 4x10 combo & it didn't have a 1/4 of the volume or sound quality that this puppy does. If you go down the separates route, go with either 1x15, 2x10 or 2x12 cabs. 2 of stacked vertically if needed.
16. Just been listening to it on the NS website, it sounds awesome too. Anybody want to buy something off me for £2k?
17.

Cheers for the GAS! From reading the bumf, this could be my ideal instrument.
18. [s]IBTD[/s] Looks like I'm gonna have to edit too Sorry, I canny help you there bud.
19. Just to add, what about a booster? There's a few in the "fx for sale" & Bubinga5 has one for £50 that might be your answer.
20. I did a gig a couple of weeks ago at a beer festival of @ 150-200 folk & used my MB 2x10 combo on it's own (didn't use the PA), which has a LMII for the amp. My bass is an Ibby SR1000 (9v active). I had the input gain just above 9 o'clock & the out @ at 11 o'clock & was well loud enough. So it sounds like one of the main factors is the fact that your bass is passive. But like is said, there's nowt wrong with turning it up as far as needed.
21. I would have thought using a metal instead of wood for a bass would sound a bit...... ...Tinny?
22. Partylight?
23. For the price of the Hartke new, you could get a much better amp 2nd hand (tho it's a good buy if you don't want s/h). Fender aren't known for making decent cabs. Just because it's got an eminence driver in it doesn't make it good. I've got a Garden & that doesn't make me a good Gardener (looks like a rain forest ). Edited to say, what about a self build cab? Leaves you with more pennies to spend on a decent amp.
