Another option is the Markbass LMII (it's only as Hi-Fi as you want it to be, the Bad Monkey & the LMII filters will sort that out for you). They can be picked up from as little as £300- £350. You should be able to pick up an excellent cab for £3-400.

I'm using a Boss CE-2 that I borrowed off a guitarist mate about a year or more ago & will need to replace it when I see him as I love the wowowowow for dubby sounds.
-
Man, I wish I could move like that when I'm not playing, let alone playing bass at the same time!
-
If you can try the cabs out, do so. You might prefer the sound of the ones with less overall loudness & I dare say either pair are gonna be more than loud enough for anything before the band need PA support.

Here's the rest of the pictures for now... Getting some Danish sanded into it... From an angle... Stuck together... & finished off for now... Excuse the pics, they was taken with my phone & put on flickr with the iPhone app (no editing or anything). I'll get some decent pics later. I'm gonna give it a wax in a few days time after the oil has lost it's stench.

I play in a wee Pentecostal church in Falkirk called the Life Church. It's only been on the go for just over a year & we don't have our own building, but are going to communities & using community halls. Most of the time I play guitar as there's only a drummer & a singer who plays a small amount of guitar. If she's confident with a set of songs then I'll pull out the bass, but that's not often enough for me We play a mix of stuff from Hymns to Tim Hughes & anything else that the congregation like. I'm really wanting to get You Wont Relent into our hymn book. Could really do with getting another musician or two through the door tho.

I saw this post when it first got posted & never got a chance to reply I had a look & is looking like a very good idea. I'll contriibute when I get a chance.
I don't really think you can get someone else to justify why you should spend that money..you can either convince yourself or you can't.
Agreed. Tho I'm just looking for opinions as to why. I'd have no probs spending £10k on a Ritter if I had the pennies.

Is that a Wishbass? They make some cool instruments.

Jazz73, I like your thinking! The Mrs had said that if she had the money, she'd buy me whatever bass I wanted. She doesn't begrudge it at all. It's more a case of curiosity. I had given some examples of what might make a bass dearer, such as the wood used, the electronics, the finish & so on. Fair enough, I can't add a string onto my bass to make it a 5 (unless I want guitar spacing), but she's said "if you like the way "X" sounds, then why not use the same electronics, pickups & so on that X uses & pop em in Y? Eg, sticking Sadowsky components in a Squire.
Just ask her with she needs so many pairs of shoes, always works for me. After reading the Fender thread, Happy Jack's P bass thread & a couple of other threads, I thought I'd pose the question that the Mrs asked me last night whilst I was oiling my bass's body (the Mrs wouldn't let me rub Danish oil on her body, so it had to be)... What makes a high end bass worth the money & where's the difference to justify it over a good sub £1000 (or even a good sub £500) job? Is a £1300 Fender P 5 stringer as good as a £1300 Dingwall Combustion & is a £2k+ "copy" P bass from the likes of Overwater or Sadowsky any better than a Fender P & actually worth the difference? & why do I need another bass when I'm happy with my Ibby (other than wanting 5 strings & no frets)? Well? Hopefully with the right ammo I'll talk her into letting me get a custom made Ritter Raptor

If you want to get rid of the chance of pink, spray the whole bass in a matt grey undercoat.

I stripped the poly finish from my bass with a gas blowtorch & a paint stripper. I heated the paint up gently (torch on lowest, unless you like scorched wood) & gently scraped with scraper. I then did the same again with the shellac that was under the paint & sanded the body down smooth with 40 grit, then 70, 120 & finally with 240 grit sandpaper & now in the process of coating the ash body in Danish oil (it reeks, but looks good!) I'm planning on doing 2-3 coats per day for the following 4-5 days (or whenever I get bored of not being able to play it). THen I'm gonna leave it for a week & then coat it with bees wax. I'm still toying with the idea of adding some silver leaf, aluminium paint or some other colour to a section of the body. If you can spraypaint, then finishing a bass isn't gonna be hard.

Ok, not a complete choob amp, but what about a Markbass or Genz Benz with a tube pre?
-
It really depends what sort of sound you're after. I like my bass with a filter (sometimes auto, sometimes with a pedal), a little drive, some kinda flanger (or filter) sweep & either a little slow chorus or loads of fast chorus. I want an octaver as well. My advice to anyone new to effects is get a multi fx pedal (zoom, line 6 & roland are all good starters). This way you'll find out what kind of fx you're going to use & don't end up spending money on things that you never use & bought just because it had a funny name or someone who plays a completely different style suggested it.

Very nice. Only thing I'm not keen on is the prominence of the string tap, but that's a personal opinion.
-
I'm refinishing mine myself. After mucho thought, I'm going with tung oil. Hope it looks good when I'm done.
-
Nice one.

Flat here with a little VPF & a little more VLE. I may do slight adjustments to suit venues if needed.
-
Oh, another thought is the Bose Array Thingybob. A church I visit now & again has one for the band & it sounds pretty good, but I think they're over your budget new. S/H maybe??? Again, what about BFM? (Bill, mind my commission )
-
TB is off line. Was that thread that stupid?
-
For outdoor stuff, I've always been happy with the sound of Peavey HiSys or EV cabs. For indoors, I recently heard a DAS pa system & sounded very nice. But, I would have thought the best bang for buck would be to build some BFM tops & subs?

Instead of wasting your money, could I point you here? Take a look around & you'll get a much better rig for the same money.
-
If you can, get all the backline (Bass & guitar amps, etc) behind everyone & then it's a case of making some adjustments to suit the venue you're playing in. It's really as simple as that & the PA is just to project everything better to the audience. I've played many gigs with no PA other than a small vocal PA. If your bass was going thru the PA & the guitars wasn't, then it may have been a case of not being able to hear one another properly.
