1. I have a 20 odd year old Ibanez SR1000 that I bought new in metallic charcoal & over the years has acquired many chips & dents in the paintwork. When I bought it I loved hard rock & heavy metal, so the bass' image went well with the leather jackets etc. Now I'm 40 & I still love the bass but I'm not so keen on black anymore (or all the chips in it) & have been toying with the idea for about a year now of taking the thing apart & stripping it back to the wood & maybe lacquer or oil/wax it or spray it a different colour (I used to be a signwriter, so competent & confident enough to do all the preps & spraying). Should I do it? I don't plan on ever selling the bass.
2. B5, I'd like to suggest learning some more theory. Not how to read, but how scales work. You don't even have to learn the names of the scales but learning them will open your mind up massively & allow you to work out the scale(s) used in a song & you'll know what notes can be used in a song. Sometimes you can play that F# when everyone else is playing a C, it might make a G maj11 or a C add #11 or a dirty look from the rest of the band. Pack the bass in it's case & pop it in a cupboard for a month & get a keyboard or a guitar & learn it. It'll be fun & you'll gain from it & then you can dig the bass back out & take a different musician's approach to it. I've packed the bass away many times, still my favourite instrument! Have fun with music.
3. I tend to use a porcelain pan to store mine in (it holds loads & seems to be bottomless). I just stored some in the inlaw's porcelain pan about 10 mins ago as I had some spare.
4. Just an amp or a combo? If it's just an amp, then try & stretch to get a Markbass LMII. They're @ £300-350 s/h.
5. Your 5 won't damage speakers, wear & tear or abuse will. Like the above says, email one or two of the manufacturers for what should be in your cab.
6. I'd find out what the cab volume needs to be in respect of having 4 drivers in it & see what drivers match with it. Don't get caught up in watts, just make sure the ohms are the same
7. Without sounding like a sales rep for Alex, I'd have a look at the Barefaced super 12 or some of his other cabs. You'll be hard pushed to find one 2nd hand tho. Other cabs I'd recommend are any decent 2x10s or 2x12s from Markbass, Genz Benz, Bergantino, GK, TC Electronic, etc. My best advice is to get to a good bass stockist & try loads out (Bass Direct, the Bass Gallery or the Bass Merchant are but a few that come to mind). Most of all, have fun trying different options.
8. You could be right there Mr Foxen. I should have left out calling it combing & just explained a bit of what happens.
9. Mixing speakers of different sizes that operate in the same frequencies cause something called combing (where different frequencies are cancelled out or multiplied). Sometimes it has a positive effect, sometimes a negative effect, there's a lot of things to take into account. Using the same size speakers means you're not going to get random results every gig. Does it have to be Ampeg? If not then there's loads of better cabs out there.
10. None. Either 2 2x10s or 2 1x15s or maybe 2 4x10s if you don't like the look of stacked vertical cabs. If it has to be one of the bunch above, the 2x10 & the 4x10. That way you're not mixing up speaker sizes.
11. Well My band BigRoom are doing a gig this weekend despite never having played together for a year & this time it's slightly different. We have a drummer! It's gonna kick off with my singer doing some solo stuff from the BigRoom catalogue, then me & him doing some more stuff, Toyz & then Back on as BigRoom with drums. Toyz is an experimental band that have never played anywhere (not even a rehearsal) & is made up of our drummer either playing a lekky kit or on keys, our singer on synth guitar & myself messing about with whatever instruments I can get my grubby hands on (including some good use of the moog pedals )! I'm really looking forward to this one as any time BigRoom or Frigorifico (where the drummer is from) have done a bit of improvising type stuff, it's made some brilliant songs. Some of which still get played. So here's some other details... Kinbuck Annual Beer Festival 2pm – Late The Centre, Main Street Kinbuck (near Dunblane) Entry £5.00 includes Souvenir Glass and first Half pint Beers from Bridge of Allan Brewery Food for sale from 4:30pm Not sure who on here is in the area, but if you want to come along & need directions, PM me.
12. I use the moog EP2 & it does exactly what it says on the tin. It's well built & has a pot at the side to let you choose how much of an effect it will have. Well worth £30 or whatever it is now.
13. The Way Huge Swollen Pickle has been getting a good shout on here recently. Chunk System brown dog looks good too, but the one that has me interested is the Monolith Lodestone (on looks alone).
14. What about this for a mere £5357? http://www.dv247.com/guitars/ibanez-gvb100...ar-amber--71962
15. Ibanez have always had a line of higher end basses. The SR series didn't start out as a budget line (AFAIK) & there's the Gary Willis signature bass which is well over £2k (& very nice it looks too). Would I spend £2k on an Ibby? I don't know. My SR1000 cost me £800 & have been very happy with it for 20+ years so it depends on how good it plays & sounds.
16. Could still get a guitar & a decent octaver or midi the guitar up. Me myself, I'd go back to analogue synths. They are good fun & I could probably play basslines better on it.
17. I'm gonna suggest trying some Markbass gear. Get yourself to a good shop like the Bass Mercant or Bass Direct & try loads of gear.
18. Probably the hardest bassline I ever actually tried to get all the way thru is Shy Boy by Talas. I got the most of it with some of the fills me not even coming close to, but I did manage to nail the solo from 2:11! After learning it I never managed to find a band that wanted to cover it (even as a more simplified version), but it taught me to use chords, harmonics & how to tap.
19. I got a Spider pedal board flightcase from flightcase warehouse just over 2 years ago (Man, it passes quick!). Comes with a painted bit of ply & some velcro. I popped a couple of rubber feet on the back of the ply & got some heavy duty velcro & job's a good un. All in cost about £70 IIRC & is a good solid case that protects my pedals really well when getting chucked into the back of a van & I normally keep the board in the case when using.
20.
I've been using this setup for years:
See! Even he uses a light stack (although not tall & I wouldn't sit my cab on it).
21. It's a dyslexic penguin of course. Are you still thinking about them?
22. I actually surprise myself sometimes!
23. I've found a couple of great solutions for your Tall Light Stack... Either pop these one on top of t'other Or if you're feeling really flush....
24. Wheesht all this PC nonsense! Get a mac & be done with it.
25. How about a nice set of wireless headphones then? Edited for more typos!!!
