I play in an acoustic trio & prior to getting the MB combo, I only used the wee Vox Venue 30 in the acoustic band & the carlsberg rig was used in the rock band. The Vox has a 12" driver in it & could even be used in 200 folk venues. I think just about any combo will do the job you're wanting, it's what sound you want it to produce that you need to decide on. I tried the Phil Jones briefcase & was very unimpressed by both sound quality & how loud it didn't go. But the one I tried might have been faulty.

Ashdown MAG C410t vs Hartke VX3500 vs Marshall MB4210
xgsjx replied to Swaff's topic in Amps and Cabs
From what I've heard, steer clear of the Marshall. They're unreliable & weigh about 8 ton. The other two are good choices & both sound different. So try them if you can. If you're willing to go second hand then there's some great stuff to be had within your budget. Have a look in the for sale section on this forum. You could get a MarkBass LM11 & a 1/2 decent cab for £5-600 (such as a mag 410). -
Oh, does that include the Dave P.A. Systems?

In my bands, I don't so much as go for cutting thru but go for a very subby sine like sound with a couple of the mid frequencies around the 400-600hz left there for when I'm up the register playing melodies when there's just acoustic instruments playing. I find my Ibby with flats makes for a great bassy sound (put thru the mf's to tailor the sound further) , but looking to get a 5 or 6 stringer that can produce some seriously subby sounds (maybe even a fretless).

What you plan on doing is most probably going to result in shorting your outputs together & do some damage to your amp. There's also a misjudged idea that getting the full power from an amp into a 4 ohm cab is going to result in 1.5 - 2x the loudness of what you get from an 8 ohm cab, when in reality you will only get a very slight increase (in most cases, but not all). Adding more cabs moves more air, giving more loudness (volume). Best idea would be to get another HyDrive 410
Excellent – great stuff, sounds sort of honky on my PC. The problem I have with my setup is that I can’t slap/pop on the Gibson SG, as 'OutToPlayJazz' pointed out to me; that rather large neck pup gets a right bashing and it sounds – well Agggggggggg. The Mustang has only the one central pup so it’s in the frame for the pop/slap experiment. The single pup sort of limits the variation in available sound so initially I’ll stick a set of Hi Beams on it and see how I go. I have to say that tracking down a set of Short Scale 'Hi Beams or Sunbeams' was a bit of a mission. The guys at Stringbusters (Adam & James) came through with a set of Medium Gauge, short Scale Hi Beams for me, they have to order them in and were happy to do so – great service – they even answer email and will take orders over the phone. Oggy
Cheers. It does have plenty of depth to the sound when played thru headphones (or better speakers), but it's down to the set up of the bass. They aren't zingy tho! I got my TIs from stringbusters, excellent service here too. Best of luck with your new direction, you'll have to record some stuff when you get things rolling & pop a link on here.

If you're new to FX & not sure what you want, then your best option would be a multi FX pedal. Something like the Boss ME50B or one of the countless Line 6 or Zoom pedals, depending on how many pennies you have. The advantage of this is that you'll find what effects you like & what does what & then know what you want in regards to individual pedals should that time come.

I've recorded a clip using photobooth & picked up with the in built mic. Hope it gives you an idea of how they sound. I put info about settings in the description on the vid. Usually I pan 75% to the neck p/u when playing with fingers & slip to 50/50 when slapping, but as you can hear, I don't do too much of it! lol

Hey Oggy, I've not got the 1/4 jack to mini jack wire to plug into my mac, but I'll get it tomorrow & hopefully record something by the weekend. Thomann sell the TI JF324 Jazz flats. They're a 32" scale (mine are JF344s, a 34" scale). I'm gonna set up my wee Vox & try recording using the mac's mic. If it's rubbish it ain't getting posted!

I've recently converted from rounds (DR Strings peacock blues) to TI Jazz flats. I do a little slap on these (just in a couple of songs tho) & although not zingy like rounds, I prefer the sound from them. If you ain't in a huge hurry, I'll record me doing a bit of slap direct into my Mac & pop a link on here. But it's getting my other half off youtube long enough for me to plug things in. Oh, she's making cakes tonight so I might get a chance then! Might not be what you're looking for, but you never know.

I'd have a look thru the 2nd hand basses on here in the for sale section, there's some good things to be had at all prices. You should maybe upgrade your amp/cab combo as well if your funds will allow. Ibanez make good all round basses & start from very little. But I would try a few basses to see what kind you like.

Erm, haven't you forgot something? Ignore me. The video didn't show up on my phone, not even any hint of one.
Just joined - what were the chances of the only other Scottish member living in the same town as me?
Nope, I'm in Perth. But moving to Falkirk soon!

Just to add... Young MC sampled the guitar part to use in his rap song Know How. It has a good bassline but now sure if it's the one you're looking for.

I think some folk on here might be reading a little too much into things (it's easy done when reading as opposed to speaking). It's a fun/recreational band. I would get him working on some grooves that don't require much kick drum (like just on the 1) & get him working the snare & he can slowly introduce more kick as he improves. Jazz & Drum n Bass are good genres for him to work with.

Welcome to the forum. That sounds like a nice P you have there.

Not quite a dedicated wah pedal, but the moog LPF with an expression pedal does the job very nicely & seems to add low frequencies to the sound. You can use either the inbuilt envelope follower to control the amount of wah & use the pedal to adjust either cutoff frequency or resonance, thus working in a traditional wah style & still have control over wahing or use the pedal to take control of the wah amount giving control of the amount that the envelope follower affects the sound. You can take a TRS cable from the env out jack & back into any of the inputs that control the 4 parameter knobs letting your playing dynamics have control of more than just the wah amount. Downside is it ain't cheap (mines was £150) or small & the expression pedal is an extra £30 (tho you can use just about any brand). But it is built like a tank with nice wooden sides.

The correct order should be Bass > Distortion > Amp & put the Chorus in the FX loop. However, I wouldn't do that & mess about until you get the sound that YOU like. It's 1/2 the fun.

From reading on here some love the MB cabs, some loathe them. I have the MB 2x10 combo & think it's one of the best combo's I've ever tried, let alone owned & good at shifting a fair amount of air. I'm sure there'll be a few along with more lightweight cab experience than I to help out. oh, that Ibanez 1x10 combo sounds like a stonker, but I'm not sure how much air the single 10 will move.

I don't see why you couldn't buy an exp pedal, take the plug off it, unsolder the wires from the pot & solder the wires to the corresponding wires in the exp pedal. Or you could remove the pot & wire up a trs socket to the wires into the hole the pot came out of. Saves removing the jack off the exp pedal & allows them to be split for transport.

Was your drummer a good drummer 20 years ago? If not, then sack showing him videos & whilst you're at it, sack him. If he is just rusty & was once good, then it could pay off to work with him.
-
Show him some Cobus or JoJo Mayer videos to give him some encouragement & hopefully he'll look at their tutorials on YouTube (watching them makes me wanna take up drums!). Get him a metronome going thru some headphones & just the 2 of you book somewhere for the 2 of you to jam some rhythms (a bit of drum & bass if you wish), this will help you to gel together then the rest of the band can fall in with the rhythm.

Do you consider yourself a BASSIST or a MUSICIAN?
xgsjx replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
A few such as SteveK & McGraham sound like they think the same as me on this one. I'm a musician because I play an instrument to create music. I'm a bassist/bass guitarist/bass player because that is my main instrument. Sometimes I'm a guitarist, sometimes I'm a keyboardist, sometimes I'm a drummer (not a very good one mind), but at the end, I'm a musician. I suppose it's a bit like a surgeon, you get different types. Are you a doctor or a brain surgeon, etc. same difference really. Each has their own specialist fields but are all doctors. Have I got tiolet paper sticking to my chin? I think I better stop now! Haha, I see there's been more posts whilst my speedy fingers are at work! Amongst my fellow forumites I's be scared to call myself either! lol I'm a bassist. -
I was in Ed Romans' about 5 years ago trying out a few basses & they offered to put it in a well used case complete with worn out stickers. Or if t's a bolt on neck, remove the neck & pop it in a suitcase.
