Funny how this topic's came back to the top page not long after me looking at These !

I don't use a compressor or limiter, but I would have thought that if you run any effects after your compressor then the limiter would be best placed at the end of the chain to catch any spikes? But then i suppose like any pedals, it's down to what you like the sound of that counts.

Recommendations for fretless strings? I'm a fretless virgin!
xgsjx replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
I've got TI Jazz flats on my fretted ibby & love them, I haven't used any other flats tho & it was no hassle going from rounds to flats (infact, it was a joy). -
I've been looking at active monitors also & the post is in the misc section (below the effects section) & the thumps was also on my shortlist. The Wharfedale Titan 12s get a good shout but I've decided to go with the db technologies Opera Live 405s.

A whilst back I was in the same situation. Looking for a good rig for £800 ish & no idea what to get. I posted on here & got all sorts of good advice & was stuck between an Ashdown rig (weighed a bit & was a touch too wooly for my ears), the Gallien Kruger RB 700 2x10 combo, the MarkBass 2x10 & the Roland 2x10 & 1x15 ext cab. I tried all but the MB & decided to take a chance & got it sent from the Bass Merchant (whom I can recommend) & I've never regretted it. I've toyed with the idea of adding an extra cab for height, but I actually don't need it for volume. I'd go & try as much stuff as you can tho.

I use the MB 102P & it cuts through in a band situation with plenty to spare. Infact, I can overpower an overpowering guitarist & drummer when needs be & rarely go thru the PA unless it's a largish gig with subs.

Well I've had a look at loads of actives & was about to go for the Titan 12, but then I found the db Opera Live 402 & then discovered the Opera Live 405 is only £5 more at £350 which from what little reviews I can find, appear to be really good. Anyone used them? Thanks for the good advice thus far.

Best reasonably priced fretted ibanez to defret?
xgsjx replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
Don't know if it interests you, but there's one of them there Ibby GWB35's on ebay for £380. -
Well I tried out that PSK Super Distortion & it does give a super amount of distortion! If you turn the gain just slightly (about half way to 1-10) then you get a nice amount of distortion that makes some nice synthy sounds when used with my mf 101, but I can get much better o/d or distortion sounds with my mf 105b, so it won't be going on my board. I am tempted to mod it tho & change the resistor in the gain section.

I haven't tried the Peterson one but I have the TC one & also Guitar Toolkit (which cost £5.99) & prefer the GT.

We have one of these & is handy if you want to record everything to your ipod. They also do it without the dock here

Hi Stewart, you're right that I should have mentioned the building as it may be of help. The current one is @ 20m x 40m & is not a traditional church building. We do go to different communities & use various buildings & would also be using it at these. The bass wouldn't be going thru a small pa system like this as I know it won't have the headroom (my band have a small 1k pa system that I tried DIing from my amp into when we first got it & then found it better not to). Hope that's of more help.

I'll have a look at the Wharfdales. Any thought's on Soundlab (I know they used to be not very good in the 80's & 90's but how about now) or Thomann's the Box? Sorry Ian, they only want to buy new. Thanks anyway.

Hi all, I'm looking for some advice on active PA speakers. Here's the situation... A small church (about 40 folk max most weeks) that I go to is looking for a PA system & I've been given that task. Up until now we have been putting vocals & acoustic guitar thru my MB combo via an Alesis 8 channel mixer with no probs & the combo is barely on & has plenty of volume. I'm now going to be playing bass as we have now got another guitarist but don't really want to put everything thru my combo. As the budget is fairly limited (not sure exactly what it is, but I estimate between £200-£400) I was originally looking at a cheapo amp & speakers such as the Meridian HA104 or a cheap Peavey system, but then I thought about active speakers as they're easier to pack away when we're finished. I then thought about spending as much of the budget as I can on just one speaker & get a decent make rather than some unknown & we can always add more when we need to. The ones that I've been looking at are the Mackie Thump TH-15A, the Samson 612 & the Mackie SRM-350 Blue. I've also been considering the JBL eon 10G2 but think a single 10" may not be enough (tho I know how much my 2x10 can move) & also had a look at some companies that I've never heard of, so don't know if they're any good or to avoid, they are LD Systems, Db technologies, Studiomaster, KAM (we have a couple of KAM mics & they're pants) & Studiospares' own brand (which was recommended in another post here). Does anyone have any suggestions on what would be the best option?

The Ashdown Lo Menzo (or whatever his name is) blends a clean low freq channel with the higher frequencies being o/d'd. No idea how it sounds tho. I use my bass murf as an o/d sometimes & the resonant filters can allow you to add extra depth to the sound, tho it's a bit pricy to use just as an o/d. I've also just found an old PSK Super Distortion that I got about 15 or more years ago & has never been used (still in it's box too). A friend of mine bought it to use with his acoustic guitar (not semi!) & then discovered that he couldn't use it so gave it to me. It's sat in a cupboard ever since. I'm gonna try it out tomorrow on my bass.

Hobbycraft or any good craft shop will have good velcro. I got 1 mitre of Velcro Heavy Duty for @ £7 odd. Enough to put 2 strips across the board & plenty for my pedals (2 moogers, a moog exp pedal & a boss chorus) & still have some left over. Cheaper Velcro has rubbish adhesive, so avoid unless you plan on superglueing it on (now there's an idea?).
-
A filter pedal to use with the EHX bass synth.
-
Another method is to follow the vocals & play their melody or even harmonize with them (mind & play some extra notes when they're not singing (such as after each line in the verse/chorus). Alternitavely, just play alternating octaves & pop down a disco groove
-
I used to have a zingy tone but my search for my sound has made me put flats on my ibby & neck p/u on full with the bridge p/u on slightly & then thru the moog pedals for extra bass (even in bypass) & a very slight ammount of od. EQ on the MB is set flat with the VLE set to @ 10 o'clock. I could discribe my sound as a fuzzy sine wave with some resonance.

I think it's a nice looking bass, but it doesn't push my buttons & for that price I could get a really nice bass made here in the UK.

opinions on playing ashdown through markbass cabs

You could make a spacer to hold one cab on top of tother. There appears to be a Dalek approaching from the left! -

From what I've been told previously on here, 2 2x10s stacked vertically to make one single column 4 high would give you the best sound dispersion, but will your ABM head fit on the top if the 2x10 is sideways? I'd have a try of both 2x10 & 4x10 with your current rig to see what sounds best to you. -
How about the new Moog Taurus III pedals? They are quite dear tho.

Started off with keys at about aged 5. My wee bro got a cheap acoustic guitar when I was 12 & i started playing basslines on it to go along with sequences that I programmed & then bought myself a bass when I was almost 14 (Vox Standard, that I am in the process of turning into a fretless) & decided it was the instrument for me. I then decided to learn some guitar & I is fairly competent on it, but I don't enjoy playing more than 2 songs in a row in front of folk.

opinions on playing ashdown through markbass cabs
xgsjx replied to gingerfish's topic in Amps and Cabs
I haven't tried the MB cabs (but want a 4x10 MB cab to add to my combo sometime), but I would get an 8 ohm & as you have an Ashdown rig so far, I would try out their neo 4x10 & you could then run a 6x10 stack if you added your current cab.
