1. Using the drum machine is a good thing. I'd go as far as to say bump some sounds in there too or even a simple chord pattern. I'll play along to anything I hear. I set the neighbour's car alarm off the other day just to get a different groove (was in Ab at @ 110 bpm).
2. Or a 1/4 inch bolt.
3. Has anyone tried one o those Infiniti fretless 5 stringers that crop up on Ebay all the time for £160? certainly look interesting for the price.
4. I think if you're wanting to earn decent money from playing then the best way is to forget the degree & find a bunch of able musicians & make sure at least one of you can write decent songs (taking a course in song writing & structure would be more beneficial) or be a tribute/functions band and play regularly. If you can find a good promoter & have a good band then you should be able to get regular gigs & build up a decent rep. If you're gonna go for a degree, do it in something you can fall back on incase you get fed up with the band/don't make anything/lose a hand.
5. First gig of the year for BigRoom & it was interesting. We're at core a three piece. Me on bass (& occasionally guitar), Dave on vocals & acoustic guitar/banjo & Andrea on mandolin/whistle/bodhran/spoons and sometimes we have other musicians join us for a couple of songs. Last night's was a blues gig so we got our drummer from Frigorifico to join in & had no rehearsal with him at all, so we thought we'd see if we can get in for 5pm, get everything set up (including the PA) and have a run over the set. We got the gear set up but the guitar & amp that Dave was going to use was feeding back bigtime with no guitar coming thru. Turns out to be a problem with the p/u in the guitar, so he quickly ran home & got his electric & another amp, plugged it all in & fine. In the meantime I'm trying to set up & was getting more reverb & wool than a sheep down a mineshaft due to the nice big wooden stage that we're on. I tried putting the combo upon the 1/2 flightcase from my pedal board, but no joy. I put it on a couple of chairs which worked slightly, but not by much so there it stayed. we got set up for 6:45 leaving about 1/2 an hour to run over the set with the drummer. The gig itself went well other than the fact that I was a bit too loud & Dave's vocals and the mandolin couldn't be heard too well. The audience enjoyed themselves tho.
6. New Years Day by U2 was the first song I learned all the way thru. They was a brilliant band back in the early 80's!
7. A good option is to save up for the Moog & the expression pedal. It's £180 well spent. Cheaper if you go the 2nd hand route.
8. And a bump before the day.
9. Markbass CMD210p lightweight & sounds great & has DI out.
10. Good shout for this thread. I'm planning on defretting my old Vox (unless someone offers me money for it, which is very unlikely).
11. Get a rare Matt metallic purple Vox Standard For £500 & spend the other £500 on pick ups, electrics & hardware & putting it back together. Now that you've decided what you want, finding one could be along hard task as there's only a few black ones about & no others. But don't despair, I just so happen to have one! ^_^
12. Welcome to Basschat. Vegas is one of my fave Holiday destinations. Not for gambling, but because there's so much to do whenever you want to do something. & I love getting out in the dessert too!
13. There's a train direct from Glasgow to Falkirk, Stirling & Perth without any changes. If you was coming from Edinburgh then it's the same train that does all 3 stops.
14. Considering borrowing an 18" bass bin off my bro for tomorrow's gig. Might even plug it in!
15. Falkirk or Stirling (or even Perth) would be a better choice. It's more central. I'd be up for one. Quick edit just to say the one in Moffat was last April & I couldn't make it due to a cuz in law's wedding
16. I've got one of those! Was my first bass & is now in pieces & finished in a flat metallic purple! I'm planning on defretting it & putting all new hardware & electrics on it. Does weigh more than your average 8x10 tho.
17. I had a shot of a few different Afterburners about 3 years ago in the Guitar Centre. 10 mins to get used to the fanned fretboard & sounded very nice too. Unfortunately I couldn't get $3000 together to get one (which back then was less than £1500!).
18.
Why didn't I think of this earlier? Here you are: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry776600 Courier collection no problemo!
Funny thing, I was gonna suggest Ashdown as their Mag stuff falls into a similar price range as the Marshall crap & is probably about 1/2 the weight & twice as good sounding. That looks like a good wee rig you're selling there. 2x10 is the way I went & stand it vertically!
19. Welcome to the groovy side. Learning blues is a good starting point as it teaches scales & progressions with ease & can be as simple or complex as you like. Go & have a listen to Doug Johns on YouTube. Ibanez are excellent basses for the money. Mine was £700 when I bought it 20 years ago & it has served me well. I'm now after a fretless 5string as soon as funds allow. There's plenty of oldies on here, a nice balance of different ages. Graeme (39)
20. I'd agree if you was to choose one then a limiter is more likely to suit. I don't use either & have (with mucho practice) learned to control how hard I slap as I play some songs that switch techniques.
21. I was gonna offer you a nice Vox standard bass that's in purple. I bought it in 1983 & it started life as a black bass. I stripped it & resprayed it metallic purple about 20 years ago. It needs new electrics, pick ups, bridge, strings, machine heads & cleaned up. Then laquered & put back together. Oh, & a refret wouldn't go amiss. Could be tempted to let it go for £300, but I see you got a nice Jazz.
22. I know rock can be hard to play, but what I actually meant was it's easy for a bunch of average (as a whole) musicians to play good sounding rock or punk music. I think funk & jazz take a lot more disciplin for a band to sound good. +1 on the 6-7 members issue too.
23. I think it's probably a lot easier for bands to play good rock music than it is to play funk or jazz well as a band. That's not a bad thing, just getting a good funk or jazz sound is a difficult thing to do in a pub.
