1. First gig of the year for BigRoom & it was interesting. We're at core a three piece. Me on bass (& occasionally guitar), Dave on vocals & acoustic guitar/banjo & Andrea on mandolin/whistle/bodhran/spoons and sometimes we have other musicians join us for a couple of songs. Last night's was a blues gig so we got our drummer from Frigorifico to join in & had no rehearsal with him at all, so we thought we'd see if we can get in for 5pm, get everything set up (including the PA) and have a run over the set. We got the gear set up but the guitar & amp that Dave was going to use was feeding back bigtime with no guitar coming thru. Turns out to be a problem with the p/u in the guitar, so he quickly ran home & got his electric & another amp, plugged it all in & fine. In the meantime I'm trying to set up & was getting more reverb & wool than a sheep down a mineshaft due to the nice big wooden stage that we're on. I tried putting the combo upon the 1/2 flightcase from my pedal board, but no joy. I put it on a couple of chairs which worked slightly, but not by much so there it stayed. we got set up for 6:45 leaving about 1/2 an hour to run over the set with the drummer. The gig itself went well other than the fact that I was a bit too loud & Dave's vocals and the mandolin couldn't be heard too well. The audience enjoyed themselves tho.
2. New Years Day by U2 was the first song I learned all the way thru. They was a brilliant band back in the early 80's!
3. A good option is to save up for the Moog & the expression pedal. It's £180 well spent. Cheaper if you go the 2nd hand route.
4. And a bump before the day.
5. Mr Delvar gives us another classic?
6. Markbass CMD210p lightweight & sounds great & has DI out.
7. Good shout for this thread. I'm planning on defretting my old Vox (unless someone offers me money for it, which is very unlikely).
8. Get a rare Matt metallic purple Vox Standard For £500 & spend the other £500 on pick ups, electrics & hardware & putting it back together. Now that you've decided what you want, finding one could be along hard task as there's only a few black ones about & no others. But don't despair, I just so happen to have one! ^_^
9. Welcome to Basschat. Vegas is one of my fave Holiday destinations. Not for gambling, but because there's so much to do whenever you want to do something. & I love getting out in the dessert too!
10. There's a train direct from Glasgow to Falkirk, Stirling & Perth without any changes. If you was coming from Edinburgh then it's the same train that does all 3 stops.
11. Considering borrowing an 18" bass bin off my bro for tomorrow's gig. Might even plug it in!
12. Falkirk or Stirling (or even Perth) would be a better choice. It's more central. I'd be up for one. Quick edit just to say the one in Moffat was last April & I couldn't make it due to a cuz in law's wedding
13. I've got one of those! Was my first bass & is now in pieces & finished in a flat metallic purple! I'm planning on defretting it & putting all new hardware & electrics on it. Does weigh more than your average 8x10 tho.
14. I had a shot of a few different Afterburners about 3 years ago in the Guitar Centre. 10 mins to get used to the fanned fretboard & sounded very nice too. Unfortunately I couldn't get $3000 together to get one (which back then was less than £1500!).
15. BUMP
16.
Why didn't I think of this earlier? Here you are: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry776600 Courier collection no problemo!
Funny thing, I was gonna suggest Ashdown as their Mag stuff falls into a similar price range as the Marshall crap & is probably about 1/2 the weight & twice as good sounding. That looks like a good wee rig you're selling there. 2x10 is the way I went & stand it vertically!
17. Welcome to the groovy side. Learning blues is a good starting point as it teaches scales & progressions with ease & can be as simple or complex as you like. Go & have a listen to Doug Johns on YouTube. Ibanez are excellent basses for the money. Mine was £700 when I bought it 20 years ago & it has served me well. I'm now after a fretless 5string as soon as funds allow. There's plenty of oldies on here, a nice balance of different ages. Graeme (39)
18. I'd agree if you was to choose one then a limiter is more likely to suit. I don't use either & have (with mucho practice) learned to control how hard I slap as I play some songs that switch techniques.
19. I was gonna offer you a nice Vox standard bass that's in purple. I bought it in 1983 & it started life as a black bass. I stripped it & resprayed it metallic purple about 20 years ago. It needs new electrics, pick ups, bridge, strings, machine heads & cleaned up. Then laquered & put back together. Oh, & a refret wouldn't go amiss. Could be tempted to let it go for £300, but I see you got a nice Jazz.
20. I know rock can be hard to play, but what I actually meant was it's easy for a bunch of average (as a whole) musicians to play good sounding rock or punk music. I think funk & jazz take a lot more disciplin for a band to sound good. +1 on the 6-7 members issue too.
21. I think it's probably a lot easier for bands to play good rock music than it is to play funk or jazz well as a band. That's not a bad thing, just getting a good funk or jazz sound is a difficult thing to do in a pub.
22. My band, BigRoom, are playing at the Victoria Hall, Station Road in Dunblane for the Holmehill community on Saturday 20th March. Also on with us are Dealer, a cracking blues band & jazz saxoponist Mikhail Rojkov. Doors open at 7:30pm & it's £8 for entry.
23. I recently saw a pair of Peavey Hysis II & a 1k power amp for sale in crack convertors for £400. Was a little tatty looking but would clean up ok. Add a mixer for @ £200 & you have an ample pa on a budget. My band use a 1k pa that the singer picked up from gear4music for @ £750. has rebranded carlsberg speakers (soundpro or summit), but it does the job for vocals, drums, guitar, mandolin & violin but I wouldn't put my bass thru it & tend to just turn my combo to suit.
24. I find when I slap on the TIs they lose a slight ammount of bottom compared to rounds but nothing drastic. They sound brilliant if slapping with a filter on. Especially if you do short slides on some notes.
25. Over the past 20 odd years of playing bass I've had many spells of leaving the bass alone & playing guitar, keys or whatever but always found after a few months, I'd go back to it (sometimes it was 6 month spells). From about 2003 to 2006 I hardly touched my bass (I didn't even have a decent amp to play through) & spent most of my music time sitting in front of a computer with Reason on it. Then a chap at work said "you play bass don't you Graeme, fancy having a jam?", the rest is history. Now I love playing bass more than ever & can't see me putting it down ever again. I do play acoustic guitar in another band, but I'm trying to get someone to replace me so I can play bass. I just like the fact that it's a humble instrument. No one acknowledges you're playing but they do when you don't.
