2. I'm wanting a nice 5 or 6 string fretless, but I doubt there'll be any from '71. EH, you could get a very nice ibby SR from '92. I got mine new in '90!
3. I'll chuck in a shout for the Moog MF-101 with the exp pedal. Will set you back about £180 - £200 new for both, but has CV options & you can get loads of control over it. Only downside is the size for some people, I prefer it as I don't want a dozen pedals on my board.
4. I prefer the shape of the SR to the shape of Fender's P or J basses & they have a stonking range of tones. Just a shame they don't hold their value as well.
5. I have Guitar Toolkit. It was £5.99 but I use it all the time & can be used for chords & scales for 4,5 & 6 string Bass, 6 & 12 string Guitar, Ukulele, Mandolin & Banjo as well as a tuner for each of those instruments and has a metronome with tap tempo or scroll wheel. Worth every penny.
6. You'd be better adding another 8 ohm cab to get more db.
7. When I bought my ibby in 1990, my mate bought a Charvel guitar which has a strat lke body & cost @ £600. So that's a bargain.

Bass Buzz

What's your set up? My bass buzzed like a fridge a couple of years back. Took the pickups off ' cleaned them & the shielding plates below em & has been fine since.
9. I think any song should be covered, just as long as it's not made to sound anything like the original. IMO a good cover is when someone takes a song & rewrites it in their own style. Anyone who covers a song the same way as the original should be banned from covering any songs at all (would put westlife out of business fully ) unless they are a function/tribute band.
10. One of my bands have a similar issue now and again. Not so much slowing down or speeding up as the song progresses, but someone slowing down or speeding up if the song starts at their not desired tempo.
11. I got TI flats from stringbusters last week & when I called them the chap I spoke to was very helpful & was a good customer service.
12. I got 2 sets of dr strings in Peacock blue. They looked good for the first month or so & then they started to look scabby as the blue turned silver around the areas where I play. But soundwise, they stay bright for ages & the G isn't very durable. Not worth what they cost over here, but if you get them from the US at @£30 a set then they're worth a punt.
13. I just got a set of TI flats from stringbusters for my ibby & coupled with the mf-101 I'm getting an amazing bassy sound just like I've been looking for. I'm seriously considering defretting it now, but may just save for a 5er & defret it. BTW, where did you get the La Bellas? I tried to get em but everywhere was out of stock.
14. Interesting looking bass that Hagstrom. Eagles have some cracking songs. Arn't they devil worshipers tho? Apart from the dyslexic one that sold his soul to Santa.
15. New years day by U2. Still a brilliant bassline and shows good basslines don't have to be hard. Also Pete Trewavis from Marillion & Tina Weymouth from Talking Heads was 2 bassists that got me started.
16. I don't quite get how a Warwick looks too metal/rock etc, I thought they'd fit in with any genre. More than my Ibanez & pedal board does in my folk/Altdot band.
17. Take it back & get your money back. This you are entitled to do & the onus is on the trader to prove it isn't faulty. Tell the trader politely that the noise is irritating you & that you want a refund. Again, this falls under the Sale of Goods Act.
18.
Maybe, however I am thinking that certain playing techniques and bass configurations will lend themselves to a certain tone. Sometimes, you can improve technique, but the inherent tone of the instrument still has the overwhelming majority in the tone stakes. My point is, that Pest may prefer to play fingers with a thumb on the pickup but wants a fatter tone - and thus - a few judicial adjustments to the gear he has will make the learning experience more enjoyable. (Hnece my suggestion over amp EQ controls etc) p.s. - Love your avatar - from one of my fave films!
I agree that pedals can be good fun & also that EQ can make the sound much better & more enjoyable, I just think that a compressor is not the answer to his problems & may even generate other problems (I could be wrong tho). p.s - Cheers, the avatar was a Xmas pressie. Brill film.
19. I've not read all this thread (but the topic has spun around a few times, which is a good thing), but I would have thought any musician would learn theory, even if it is just "the basics" on scales & chords. It's a bit like taking up golf & getting good at swinging a club but never learning the rules or how to go round a course. You can still have fun tho whacking balls at things!
20. My Zoom 708 has the very thing you're after & funnily enough, it's called Detune. I bought mine for £26 of ebay & have given it to my mandolinist to use on her mandolin, but she's reluctant to use it!
21. I wouldn't bother with any effects or a compressor & spend time learning to hold your bass so that you can play how you want to. Try to rest the ball part of your hand (the bit between the thumb & wrist) and the edge of your thumb on the body of the bass & keep your thumb about a 1/4" away from the strings & play with your index & middle finger. I'm sure there's plenty of lessons on YouTube that can help & there's plenty of folk on here that can tell you how to hold a bass better than I can.
22. For me it would be either a Ritter Roya in some old wood finish (like bog oak) or a Warwick Dolphin or Corvette. I'm not a fan of the top horn on 90% of basses & feel like it's been neglected in the design process.
23. I've managed to get a recording made this morning, it's here Puzzles part 1 Scroll to the bottom & you'll find it.
24. Hello again, Had there pedals for @ 1 year now & I still think they're money well spent. I've taken a song that I wrote years ago & played all the parts on my bass (with the exception of the drums) & done some improvisation to show some of the sounds I can get thru these. I'm also using a Boss CE-2 chorus on some parts (such as the intro piece where the Murf is animated on a slow swirl and using the LFO to make more swirly sounds & then the Chorus on top). Hope you enjoy it... As you can hear, I mainly use the exp pedal for adjusting the Cut Off or for the envelope amount. I was going to put a wee bit of slap using the envelope but I thought you've all probably heard that before. All the best for 2010, Graeme
25. That sine like bass sound is what I am trying to achieve. A distortion with a LPF & exp pedal will let you get that other bass sound that is there. I'll try & get something recorded in the morning. I also have a lend of a Boss chorus pedal which is starting to find some use without sounding 80's pop.
