1. Get a 2nd hand Zoom multi fx pedal for about £20-£30 & then you'll know what you want later after you get a better amp. I had a zoom 708 & it was the best £26 I've spent. Does a decent amount of different distortions & overdrives etc & has a reasonable wah as well as several other good useable fx such as delay, chorus, synth & compressor. I agree with Max as it's pointless spending more until you have a decent rig & you'll be surprised & impressed with a cheap multi fx pedal.
2. Talk him into taking up a different instrument. Preferably one he can't play whilst singing.
3. I use a Moog MF-101 with an expression pedal in one of the CV gates & a TRS cable from the env out back into one of the other CV gates, just now it's in the cut off, but sometimes I put it in the Resonance or amount, depending on the song (or sometimes it sends to the MF-105b & into either the LFO/Sweep or the envelope amount). I love the fact that if you keep the resonance to near minimal & the cut off at @ 9-10 o'clock you get an amazing amount of subby bass. Apparently it sucks tone in bypass, but this I haven't noticed. Might mess about with that now & see if I can tell the difference.
4. I always thought if there was a volume pedal for the guitarist that one of the other band has control over would be a great idea, especially when they want to noodle at full whack during the vocal parts. Best thing to do is sack em & not replace em. Be a three piece! I cope well at low & high volume now & we have a wonderful sound with bass, mandolin & banjo. We play death metal :brow:

Confused

I put the question forwards a few months back about cab ohmage & it makes more sense in the long run to go for 8 ohm cabs rather than 4 ohm ones (depending on what you're planning). If you want just one cab and don't want to expand on it or are running an amp that will handle a 2 ohm load, then 4 ohm cabs will get all the power from your amp. If you want to have the choice of 1 or 2 cabs with your amp (or 4 if you can run to 2 ohms) then 8 ohm cabs make sense there. The difference in a 4 ohm & an 8 ohm cab of the same model (db wise) apparently is not that much but running two 8 ohm versions is louder & clearer than the one 4 ohm version.
6. I'd either buy your other 1/2 something nice for Christmas or if you don't have an other 1/2, then use it down the docks. Get the amp.

Basswood
Basswood has often been described as having a mid emphasis and poor lows. Sounds like they gave it the wrong name then!
8. Now that's a clever idea, just a shame westone was a sh!te make from the 80's.
9. My first rig was a Carlsberg Cobra 90 bass head going into a Peavey PA cab loaded with an Eminence 15" & a horn. The amp was crap but the cab took anything I could throw at it. Currently planning on adding a PA sub to my combo (I like a very bassy sound).
10.
I really don't think it's worth posting any more Wooten clips, as it just leads to the inevitable Vic-bashing.
Very true. I thought it was a great clip although I wouldn't listen to it as a piece of music on my ipod, it's the sort of thing that should only be done live. He isn't in tune at the end (nearly is) but if I could play as good as he does then I'd be a happy chappy.
11. I've seen a couple for just over £300 since the LMIII came out. There's a mini cmd 121 for sale on here for £550, that's not much different to what you'd pay for a superfly & a 12" cab, is it?
12.
Thanks for the replies guys, it looks like the superfly is out. For me reliability will be probably be the biggest deciding factor; I couldn't be turning up to a gig with gear that may or may not cut out. I'm not goin to be able to afford backup gear anytime soon! I'll keep looking I guess, and keep an eye on the classifieds. Be sure to consider postage to Belfast if you're selling!
Have a look at mark bass. You'll get a s/h LMII for not too much more than that superfly & is a better bit of kit by a long way IMO. I tried a superfly about 2 years ago & wasn't impressed.
13. I've farted on stage. Does that count? Whole audience could smell it too!!! I did fall asleep one in a standing up position. Woke up with people looking at me smiling & giggling.
14. What's up with your gran?
15. Good selection of songs there to choose from. What I would do is have a chat with the band armed with these songs, choose what you want & then stick them on your ipod & listen to them until you know them inside out (most guitarists do not do this & prefer to wing it). This is what I do if we write a new song & I get it recorded on some device, that way I can analyse & work out what to do. Another easy song would be With or without you by U2 (infact almost any of their songs can be learned in one run).
16. I have the combo version of what you're thinking of getting & it weighs 20kg & can be carried with one hand. If you need a clean sound, keep the input level on the head down & increase the output level. If you need a dirtier sound, increase the input level & keep the output level down. I tend to keep the input so the clip light hardly ever comes on & use my murf to get some analogue overdrive. I can't see why the sansamp wouldn't do the job.
17.
It would be the bass that keeps on growing.
Buy a 4 stringer & in a year you have a 7 stringer? Progresses with you.
18.
Gibson also polish all their guitars with panda skins, the bastards.
But the pandas do have good working conditions and are well paid, as opposed to most immigrants! I agree with Beedster, I have a strong view on animal welfare & try to only eat locally sourced organic meat & dairy products & try hard to avoid getting anything where there may have been any animals being mistreated. After seeing what KFC do, I would never go their again. If you can stomach it, search Kentucky Fried Cruelty on youtube.
19. I'm not an expert in pedals so I may be corrected, but I would have thought that having the compressor before the env filter (or any follower pedals) would make you lose out on controlling the dynamics of the filter due to it levelling the signal out. I don't use a compressor at all after trying a few as I found all they did was ruin my dynamics & add ground noise. I agree with the above order "Pitch Shifting > Dirt > Filter > Modulation > Time based" but deciding how you want them is 1/2 the fun & how you'll find "your" sound.
20. Brilliant idea, but could be a bummer when it needs a refret!
21. When he plays with just the index finger & rests his pinky on the bridge it gives me the creeps. How does it bend like that?
22. You should try & find just one or two musicians just to have a jam with (preferably either a drummer or a singer, or a drummer that sings) & have fun there. Then find another musician (doesn't have to be a guitarist, could be keys or violin, etc) just to jam & see how things progress from there. My acoustic (well almost) band, BigRoom, started this way. Me & the vocalist from my other band (Frigorifico) who also plays guitar & banjo started having a mess about with some ideas that wouldn't fit in our AOR band just for our own fun & then a few months later we got a mandolinist (who plays uke, tin whistle & spoons too) round for a jam & things developed from there. Two & a half years down the line & BigRoom is now our main band & are expanding on it to include a violinist, percussionist and possibly a bouzouki player too. The AOR band has kinda fell by the wayside a bit as quite often there was only 2-3 of us turning up at rehearsals My point is, if you find someone to jam with you can then have fun without the hassles of a strange band & you can also tell that guitard that you have other musical commitments if he brings the reform back up. Good luck either way.
23.
But what if the band member turns up with his composition written out, and the other band members can read fluently? Would the writer be able to convey his newly-written song as effectively?
This is how classical music is written by most composers (until computers allowed them to chuck ideas down anyway), so yes, it can be done. The person who wrote the song might have to act as conductor tho.
24. Mostly on full as the envelope filter works better when used if there is a hotter signal going in. I used to have is rolled back slightly, but there's no difference soundwise. Only time I turn it is when I want no sound & it goes right down. An on/off switch would be better.
