'All original'. What does it actually mean....?
xgsjx replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
"All original" usually just means it's from the USA in most cases. -
Been looking to get unfamiliar bass sounds from my bass too (I do like my bass sound but some songs would suit synth type sounds). Anyway, have a look at the EHX Bass micro synth, the Digitech synth wah, or go down the slow path of building a kit to get your sound like I'm going for. Go to the review section & hear the moogerfoogers, might be your thing, might not, free to hear & find out.

It is a good sound for that style of music if there's only one guitarist. Add a second guitarist to a band & it would probably get lost & sound pants. I agree that more bottom would be better, but there's little in the way of bottom end from 60's blues rock (that I've found).

Now for £20 - £30 you can get a Stagg pedalboard, but I reacon they might be built to only take small peoples weight & just be used in the bedroom (could be wrong tho). Hardware store (B&Q, Homebase, etc) will have toolboxes of the sturdy flightcase variety for anout £20 - £30. Turn it upside down & that's the same as the Stagg but with better build quality. I do like the idea of that first board tho & might build something based on the idea but with a lid.

I did a gig with a limiter not long ago. It was an acoustic gig & it cut out a few times & we wasn't playing loud. I know a lot of guits like the volume at 11, which is stupid & sounds gantin. Petition signed.

If you're interested, I've put a couple of clips up using the MuRF as an overdrive pedal. You can find it in the effects reviews on here. G

Cheers Steve, so far I've been very impressed with them. I took them to rehearsals on Monday there (as if I'd leave em behind) & tried all sorts of things with em. One thing they do good is give loads of bottom without going muddy or bad & my combo didn't feel any stress from it. I tried fuzzying up the sound using the drive controls on both pedals & was happy with the sound although I'm not sure any of our current set would suit fuzz on the bass, but I might develop something. The LPF makes some super dubby bass sounds as well as fabulous 70's wah & the filters on the MuRF just makes my sound cut thru without being too loud & just sounds lovely. I was kinda wondering at first if I woulda been wiser spending the money on a multi fx unit (one of the dearer ones), but after rehearsals I'm glad I didn't cause I love what these are doing to my sound. Here's a couple more clips using drive................. First up is just using the MuRF for drive (plain bass at the start again) & the last couple of takes I added the LPF for a bit more drive.............. Next I thought I'd play the same thing using animation 8 B still with a good amount of drive & then turned on the LPF & messed with the knobs............. Hope this helps understand some more of what these are capable of. G

I set everything flat & back the MidBass to @ 10-11 o'clock & have come to like setting my bass a bit brighter & putting the VLE at 10 o'clock & the VPF at 2 o'clock. However, since getting the moogers the filter settings might be getting messed with as I put em both off at band practice last night to get the tops from the MuRF clear. g

Bass MuRF does some lovely analog overdrive & you can use it for loads of other stuff. I'll get some clips on my review of it in a few days so you can hear if it's what you're looking for. It's a bit more than £30 tho. G

I think Basschat could grow, but there's nothing wrong with it as it is. The chatroom idea sounds good as does the idea of MySpace style pages for members, but then again, I like the page layout as it stands. I do think Basschat should remain free tho. I have no probs paying a subscription but I think there would be less members & that would have a negative effect on how good it works just now (questions, advice etc from fellow basschatters). Advertising & maybe an online shop for members to sell at a commission (keep the free marketplace on here) would be like a secondhand webshop (now there's an idea)! Either that or a bass version of Ebay. G
I like your patch names
Thanks :brow: Most of my patches get names of that ilk. Unfortunately the moogerfoogers dont have displays or I would continue the trend. If anyone's interested, I've reviewed the MFs & popped sound clips up in the reviews section. It is a partial review as I've not had them long enough to tell all that's bad about em, but I'll keep adding to the reviews as time goes. G

I like it. Sounds pretty good to me.

Well this is my first ever review of something & it's recently acquired items so I'll do it as a rolling review & add bits as time goes on. First on the list is the MF-105B or Bass MuRF as it's known. I originally thought that this was a synth pedal of some sort, it's not. To break it down, it takes 8 harmonic frequencies from your bass (or whatever you put into it) & allows you to filter them out a'la EQ style. This can be animated in a set sequence (there's 22 patterns & a further 2 static). The second set of patterns have an LFO swoop over them which is kinda like a slow phaser effect which is cool. There's an Envelope control which goes from percussive to continuous to slow attack sounds. A Mix control to blend in some bass if you want and a Rate control, use to adjust tempo. There is a Drive & an Output control & this can be used as a very good analog distortion pedal. Downsides so far: There's not enough 3/4 or 12/8 timings, although I'm finding out that you can mess about with some things on it to get this effect. That's all I can find so far. Using this with animation set to static, you can really tweak your sound to get a really sweet sound that you cannot get with an EQ. I'll move onto the MF-101 LowPass Filter. This pedal lets you filter out as much top as you want & then you can set the envelope amount so that when you play you can get an auto wah effect or a dub bass effect. I have to say that this pedal is more of a synth sounding filter than the MuRF & can make your bass very bassy. The filter has a 2 pole & a 4 pole switch, 2 pole is 1/2 the filter on, which gives a brighter sound & 4 pole is the filter fully on, which is more muffled. There's a Smooth/Fast switch on the envelope side for what sort of response you want & a Mix control. The Drive control allows for some good distortion (again? Could try distorting the distortion of the MuRF I suppose!) & on the filter there's a resonance control that allows for some fabulous effects to be had. Downsides so far: If you use a cheap (te*co, etc) adaptor, the thing buzzes like a fridge. Nothing else so far. Using this on slap can sound quite amazing. Coupling this with the MuRF allows for some amazing sounds full stop & looking forward to using it in a band situation. I plan on getting a tap tempo for the MuRF & an expression pedal to use on either as I've read that it makes the LPF sound like a very controllable synth. I'll continue more on these at a later date once I get to know them better, but for now, have some sound clips............ First clip is bass into 105B. I start off with the MuRF bypassed so you can hear the bass. The bassline is "Little Disappointments" by Frigorifico. Next up is the 101. Again it bypassed for the first run to hear a plain bass. The bassline is "Carlos Fandango" by Frigorifico. Finally I drop D'd my bass so I could play octaves whilst messing with both pedals. It's bass into MuRF into Filter. I used just the one animation (No 10) & messed with the filter sliders on the MuRF & the Envelope amount, Cutoff & Resonance on the LPF. Kinda chillout techno groove for this one made up on the spot... G

First thing I played was one of my own basslines thru the MuRF. As was the 2nd, 3rd & 4th. First known bassline I played this year was Use Me by Bill Withers thru the MuRF as it's the only song we cover regularly. Sounded interesting.

Been a Talkbass member for a little while now, but the other day I had forgot I was & tried to register only to be told my used id was already in use (shows how much I use TB). It is good for info & I was almost tempted to join the Moog users club, the Ibanez users club & the Markbass users club, but after discovering there isn't a Zoom users club I decided not to bother

Allow me to be the first with shiny new pedals, I've always wanted to post in here but thought just having one sh!tty Zoom multi pedal wouldn't cut it on here! My GF (sweet thing that she is) got me a Bass MuRF & on New Year's eve I went & got the MF-101 with some Xmas money. I've just went & bought another 9 volt adaptor so I can see if putting anything from the zoom into the MFs could sound good, there's one or two 1/2 decent fx in the zoom if you spend a little time messing & the delay could prove useful. Anyway, without further ado I give you....................... I'll get some reviews of all my gear in a few weeks & might try & get some sound clips up for you who is interested in any of this gear (not mine specifically). G

Get regular gigs for both bands. Build a BFM Tuba 24. Buy a compressor. G

Have a guid new year all. Up here it's homecoming year (sounds like it could be a big bass bash)! G

Cheers Ben, My concern I think is if putting the two mono jacks into the MuRF will cause a short in it as the stereo jack has the two shield (Negative feeds) linked. If the MuRF's outs are wired inside on the sockets as to be left jack = Positive tip & right jack = Negative tip, then that is what could cause damage. It's probably unlikely to be this, but if it was only to run separate mono leads for both left & right, then it would make no difference. G
-
He is a brilliant bassist & as far as bass playing goes is one of my idols. But that unfortunately is where it ends.
Really don't know much about his spirituality, at the worst it means he's a "christian".
Sorry buddy, a Christian believes in God & Jesus etc, a scientologist believes in Zorg (or something like that), alien spirits & was made up by a science fiction author (L. Ron Hubbard).

Many moons ago I put 2 mono channels onto a stereo jack & because it was 2 separate lines, it caused a short & burnt out the amp. I don't want a similar thing happening to the mac or the murf & I'm probably being over cautious. I'm using either Garageband or Audacity to record. G
-
Does anyone know if it is safe to take a lead with two mono 1/4 jacks on one end to a stereo 2.4mm jack from the MuRF into my mac to get a stereo recording? I know with some devices this can do damage to one or both (made this mistake in the past). G

I enjoy a bit of solo bass but don't do it enough. One of the first solo pieces I did was my own transcription of Fur Elise after having learned it on piano. I need to dig that out again. I tried learning NV43345 & 3A17 7718 by Billy Sheehan (both from the Talas Years album), but I never managed to play either of them the full way thru. Did learn ShyBoy tho. However, attempting these did learn me how to hold chords & tap, play harmonic scales & a few other techniques. I'd love to learn some more solo bass stuff as what I have just now is very little & I haven't gotten around to looking for any transcriptions (too busy on here you see! ).

I've heard a lot of better/worse players than me but the important thing is that I'm competent at playing & confident in my band. Yes the drummer gets the wrong tempo now & again and the guitarist never plays the same thing twice (EVER). But they both sound good & no one knows if it's meant to go like that or not as it is original material. My singer is pretty much pitch perfect & quite often he sings parts of songs different from a previous version. I think I'm the only one who plays the same thing twice but I wouldn't swap my band members for anyone else 'cause what they play is what I like & fits in perfectly. Now that I've got myself a MuRF the drummer's gonna have to try & keep timing with me (I might need a tap tempo switch for this one!), but if he doesn't, I can make use of it's animator in my other band that has no drummer (it's acoustic folk country blues jazz type stuff). But overall, I'm a very good bassist. I can play what I need with fingers or pick, I can tap, but not as good as Mr Sheehan (his Talas years learned me a lot), I can slap, but not as good as Flea or Mr Wooten and I can play fast fills, scales etc. Most importantly, I can play what's needed to make a song sound good & keep time with the band. I started my musical life off on keys when my parents got me an organ for my 5th Christmas. Then when I was 12 my dad took me to get another mono synth (Jem SX1000) & my wee bro got an acoustic guitar, needless to say he never played it so I decided to learn it & then decided I wanted to play bass when I was 14 as I kept coming up with basslines on the synths & the guitar. I still have a semi acoustic & play regularly & considering getting a decent keyboard in the near future (something I can use in the band to play basslines on!). G
