1. The Chain was the first song I learned on bass, closely followed by loads of U2, The Cult, The Cure, Talking Heads, etc. You'll find hundreds of songs that are easy to play. I suggest starting with something like "With or without you" by U2 as it has a very easy bassline but will help you to keep time as it's just constant 8th notes (there's bound to be tonnes of songs that could fit that bill that you already know tho). Anyway, best of luck on learning bass. It's fairly easy to get the basics of. G
2.
Treasure that, they are rare I believe...
They are indeed. Bass murf's are easier to get tho :brow:
3. My girlfriend got me a moogerfooger bass murf. Looking forward to getting home to try it out!
4. now I have an excuse to get a 5 string! Cheers
5.
Blimey, how does that work??? Matt
From what I can hear, it doesn't Saying that tho, the guitarist should maybe try playing that way too On a serious side tho, AM. Playing left handed may work well for you & I hope it does, but it doesn't get rid of the problem which may still be a pain playing lefty. I'd try restringing your bass to left & see how you get on with it but I would get someone private (physio, etc) to have a look at your lump for your long term benefit. I get a pain in my wrist also, but only when I'm holding octaved notes & I'm fine if I'm holding a chord as long as it's not for too long (I blame old age for this!). Anyway, welcome to the world of bass & hope you get sorted by which ever method & enjoy it. G
6. I have a lead that I take straight from my bass straight into the back of the mac. You can hear how it sounds here: www.myspace.com/frigorific & listen to "R we having fun" and "Criminal". I re recorded the bass in GB. I done most of the mixing of all four of the songs in garageband & then put the individual tracks into Audacity (also free) and finished them there. Garageband seemed to lose top end & volume for some strange reason when I exported the finished jobbies.

8. Could make it a big long slide from the C# to the G
9. I know Should be fun trying to play this one!
10. -------5-- ---------17 -7------4- ---5-3---- Need to get rid of some dust!
11. I work for an insurance company & thought I'd share a little knowledge (tho you may already know it). If your home insurance has Personal Possessions cover, then it may well cover your gear & quite often this is a worldwide cover. However, if you are using your gear for business use (gigging for money) then it might not cover it but you may be able to add that option, depending on who you are with. Problem is tho, if you do have to claim, it's gonna put your house insurance up, not just your gear insurance. Hope this is of some use.
12. That was Excellent! Have a great Christmas.
13. I've got an idea, don't know if it would work tho. What about putting one of the aggi cabs the other side of the room\stage facing you? Either that or tell the drummer to stop smashing the crash & open hats constantly & get control of the guitarists volume pedal (something my band considers regularly).
14. As you can see, you'll get countless responses for mac & pc and what's the best operating system to use (osX, Windows whatever or Linux). Once you've made up your mind (which will probably change a few months after you've got your desired machine), you need to make sure it has decent specs: What you should be looking for is a decent sized processor, if it's a laptop you should look for at least a 1.4g but the more the merrier, if it's a pc or mac you want to be looking at 2g+. Try for at least 1 gb of ram, a decent graphics card (256 or above is good) and make sure there's a nice big hard drive in it. Hard drive is not the main concern tho, as you can easily add an external drive on & nowadays you can get a terrabyte drive for less than £100! Make sure there's plenty of USB ports (4 or 5 is good) as you always find things to plug in, but again if you run out, you can plug in a USB hub that will turn 1 into 4. You may want either a decent soundcard or audio interface. I find the soundcard in my iMac good enough for what I do but my singer has an audio interface for his macbook as he uses it in live situations. A decent lcd monitor should be on your list (maybe not if you go down the laptop/imac route) and a good set of nearfield monitors (the speaker type) for listening to your music on. Then get your desired software (there's countless options) & that's you ready. G
15. I have a pc laptop & an iMac. I haven't used the laptop for music (or anything else) since getting the mac other than to take files off it. The rest of my band either have or are getting macs. My other half is an IT consultant & says she prefers windows but is always fighting with me to get on the mac. I think it could be something to do with it being a lot more stable. There isn't a huge amount of software for osX, but what there is does what you need it to as opposed to having 20 bits of sh*tty pc progs running to try & get the job done only for it to slow right down then crash (been there many times & broke pc's for this). If you want a pc that's going to compare with a mac you may find yourself spending more than a decent mac with logic. Now go & buy a pc
16. Markbass combos get my vote due to being light, loud & sounding great. There's a couple of 3x10 combos on here but I believe you can't use an ext cab as it's already 6 ohms. The 2x10 that I have is a great option, but I haven't seen any s/h lately. G

WHAT....!!!

Although I'm not a Fender fan, I do know what you mean. I'm considering getting a 5 string (corvette has caught my interest) but will it replace the bass I've been playing for the past 20 years? I doubt it. It has the sound & feel that I know & love. Not tried an Ibby 5 string tho so might try a new 1005 to see how they are (if I can find one up here).
18. I might be interested in the Tuba 24. 2 quick Qs, How much are you wanting for it & Is it possible to ship it? Cheers, G
19. We (BigRoom) had a gig on Thursday night there at Brennan's in Perth. We turned up for a soundcheck at 8pm & the only folk in the place was 2 sound engineers & a guitarist/singer & thought "oh dear". 9pm came and then quite a few folk turned up & the night opened with a female duo on guitar & djembe, these two was quite amazing & had a big sound for a 2 piece. The following act was the singer/guitarist who was due to finish the evening but asked if we'd like to swap places. We then went on & got an unexpectedly good response & really enjoyed every minute of it. For the closing number we decided to ask the djembe player if she'd like to join in as it's a straight forward rock song done on bass, acc guitar & mandolin. She done a better job of the percussion than what our drummer does in the rock band (Frigorifico). If any of you would like to play at this venue (it's pretty much just started) then send me a pm with a link to some songs & I'll pop em forward to the promoter as she's looking for bands (preferably acoustic, but can take a smallish drum kit) to play in the coming year. G
20.
I always say bass is easy to play, but it's hard to play well!
I've said that many a time to people wanting to learn an instrument. Guitarists get away with playing any p!sh at any timing but the Drummer & the Bassist need to be on the money to start with. Add in some soloing & tapping & so on for bass, then guitar becomes a much easier instrument to learn in the long run (smaller frets, lighter strings, etc). My other half once said that the guitarist & the singer was the ones that you would notice any mistakes on, the next gig she was at I played some intentional (& unintentional) bad notes & a bit of bad timing in a song to prove a point. She now knows that as long as me & the beats are tight, the other two can do what they want. I'm not saying this from a bassists point of view, as I started off as a keys man (well, boy) & then went to guitar.

PA

Our band's pa has a Yamaha mixer too, 12 channel & has been pretty good. Was hoping to be able to use the usb to fire individual tracks to Ableton but haven't sussed if it can be done. My singer went & bought a PA system for less than a grand & came back with the mixer & a Carlsberg amp & speakers (my personal opinion of Carlsbro stuff is that it's a pile of w@nk, I've had other bits of their junk before). I never go thru it as it's only a 1k system & I make it fart. Saying that, I think a ukulele could make it fart. Adding another amp & more speakers (pref subs also) would be a good thing.

Reliability

Thanks all, I'm still kinda in 2 minds whether to start a pedal collection or just get a decent multi fx box (the Boss GT10B & the Zoom B9.2 seem to be the best two I've found so far). I like the idea of building a board to get "My" sound, but I like the fact that you can set patches on a multi box & control different parameters with a pedal (slowly bring in overdrive etc). I know there's more expensive multi fx that are good but I'm saving for a new bass & an ext cab for the bigger gigs & don't mind spending dribs & drabs on a pedal at a time.
23. the newer combos from the past 7-8 months says LMll on em. I think it was about a week after mines was made, which is mildly irritating.

BigRoom in Perth

BigRoom are playing their first gig in Perth (Scotland, not Oz). If any local (or not so local) BCers want to see us play, we're in Brennan's on Thursday 4th December at @ 10pm. There's other acts on but no idea who as I just found out about the gig last night. G

Reliability

Got a question for y'all with pedals ("not another" I hear you say). Who's pedals do you find most reliable & who's is not? I was set on getting some EHX pedals, but after reading some reviews, it appears there's a 50/50 on good & bad reliability with them so it's left me looking elsewhere. Should I go with the EHX? Was thinking of a Black Finger & a QTron & a flanger or phaser. Is the MXR Phase 90 worth the money & what's the difference between versions? G
