Bass playing as a chill out & stress relief..
xgsjx replied to silverfoxnik's topic in General Discussion
It seems that, woman or no woman, there's nothing more satisfying than grabbing your instrument & loosening up the right wrist for a bit of stress relief Funny how cats love basses tho... -
So if I set my input level on an amp in a combo so that the clip lights just blip on the hard notes of an active bass, should I in theory, be able to turn the output level all the way up without fear of doing any damage or is it the initial "pop" from a note (either slapped or picked or whatever) that puts the drivers at risk? Obviously turn down if it sounds bad in reality, but just trying to get a feel for what is & is not possible as I still get scared by how much I'm moving the drivers, but it does sound clean enough.

Here's a snippet of Your Song, it's similar to the sound I have in mind. Almost sine wave sounding but not quite. Is a low pass filter what I would need? I tried a Boss octaver pedal a few weeks back & wasn't impressed with it as the lower notes just sounded like a slightly stretched elastic band. I will try my guitarists one & try popping it back thru another octaver to see what effect that has. I do like the sound of my bass but a couple of our songs are very DnB or Electro inspired & would suit a good dubby synth sound. If I can't do it with pedals I'll buy a synth but I prefer playing the stringy thingy.

I've been looking at different pedals for a while now, but don't know where to start. I'm trying to build a sound up that I like & was looking at synth & compressor pedals but so far all the synth sounds are not what I'm looking for. I don't want distorted or squelchy sounds, although I may add a fuzz of some sort but looking for a more mellow kind of sound (think "Your Song" by Groove Armada) that I could then liven up with a fuzz. I looked at the EH Bass micro synth, the MoogerFooger Bass Murf, the Digitech synth wah & loads of other filter pedals but what I've found so far is either distortion, Squelch or envelope wah or a mix of any of these. Anybody any ideas on how to get a more mellowish sounding synth like tone from my bass? Would getting 2 octavers & putting something between em have desired effect? So far all I've really used is a Zoom 708 pedal, which has some ok sounds but nothing what I'm looking for. G

Band intros. And on bass... "The Fat Bloke"...
xgsjx replied to thepurpleblob's topic in Theory and Technique
Find something really annoying. My G**tarist has this annoying habit of playing the first 6 notes of "Happy birthday to you" & ya just wanna hit him with something. I started playing "We wish you a merry xmas" but being a G*it****t he just joined in! It would go down well in the coming month tho  -
I was looking at this 6 mumphs ago both with the 410 & the 1 15 is @ £599 but read that the non SVT heads (the B2RE in particular) is not very loud & not all that good either. I'd find a shop & try it first, there's a reason for it being this price me thinks besides paying for an Ampeg badge.

I was looking at the Roland 210 combo from the very same place. Was gonna get the 15 ext cab too. Prices have gone up slightly but still very cheap. Good buy if you ask me.

Soundcheck (if poss), pint, p!ss (preferably separate glass), retune (silent), play.

I have a Zoom 708 (not the II) & it is a good pedal for the money (@£25). Now the sounds arn't studio quality & she sound from my bass does suffer if I pop it into bypass, but like is said, when playing live it isn't noticed & the fx are very useable. Even the synth sounds can be used. The octaver is about as good as the boss stand alone oc3 or whatever it's called (anything low sounds like a flabby elastic band) but everything is very useable. I'm looking for whether to go down a quality multi pedal, which is why this forum interests me loads, or if I should start building a pedal collection. The advantage I find with multiboxes is presets. How about a sticky section for all the stickies to go in? Sorry, I'll leave just now

Finally got a chance to get a pic of my bass...

i voted natural, but it depends on the wood. My ibby bass is metallic charcoal (sparkly black as the ladies call it) & my vox thing is purple. I plan on digging the old vox out & redoing it, then i might sell it. My next bass is more than likely gonna be natural, but then it depends on what cometh my way...........

My band have just completed a demo CD to help with getting gigs. What I thought I'd do for all our benefits (hopefully) is start a post about techniques & tips on what to do to help get gigs. Things like what to say to promote your band or what should you put with the demo for a spiel. Also where to look to find possible venues & good sites besides Myspace & Bebo. I can offer a couple of good sites just now to start with: www.tourdates.co.uk www.isound.com I'll add any info I find as and when. Not sure if I've put this in the right forum or if there's something similar, but it was the nearest to what I could find. Could you move it to where it should be if needed? G

+1 for Roqsolid. I got mine's from amplifiercoversonline.com or whatever it is & it's a perfect fit & kittenproof! Called me up the day after I ordered online to check that it was the correct cover & to confirm what colour piping I wanted (Yellow of course, ) Quick summary: Double lined, double stitched, good fit & even the handles line up perfectly.

Easy answer. F** the valve amp idea & get something like a Markbass or GenzBenz amp & then get a valve compressor pedal. Light, more reliable & more durable. Although I would have a shot of some valve stuff as it does have a nice warm tone & try & compare. Horses for courses stuff OK, not such an easy answer, :brow:

Like is already said, use either a splitter of some sort (stereo fx pedal etc) or go from a line or DI out of either combo to the input of other one. That is if you wanna try the 2 together & see how they sound. I would either sell the SWR & try get as much as poss as it's fairly new & get the ext cab for the Marshall, or keep the SWR & still buy the ext cab. Those Marshall combos seem to be very good for the money. Haven't tried one but nearly went for the 4x10 combo (the weight put me off) as they're cheap as hell.
I second the Markbass 2x10 combo. Was a little unsure at first that it could deliver as backline on the bigger stages but it's working out fine.
+ again on the CMD 102P. I was using it last night & still can't get over how it pumps out the really low frequencies

I saw these advertised many months ago on various websites at silly low prices with none in stock, so it makes me wonder if there's been major issues with quality that they've not been able to release them or someone's made an arse of pricing em & can't afford to produce em. I would have liked to have compared it with other gear too. Happy with what I have tho

Just a quick note kinda 1/2 relating to what you're doing. Download Audacity, it's free. I messed with Garageband for ages & it's good for everything except the final mix. Export each track individually as wav files & make a new project to mix in Audacity, it keeps the sparkle there. Go & hear what I did at www.myspace.com/frigorificoband

Rocking Rooster was selling Roland combo's dead cheap & was I was gonna get one before I got the MB. About £400 for the 15 & £450 for the 210. Should fit your bill. If you want ampeg, they can be had for your sort of money, you can get a 4x10 & b2re for about £600 but IMO they're kaka.

I've done a couple of gigs with a 30 watt Vox Venue combo with a car sub in it. They was fairly small gigs of about 50 folk & I only had to compete with a semi acoustic guitar/singer and a mandolin and coped surprisingly well.

cmd102p is a good choice. Can add an extra cab for large gigs with no pa support if needed. I looked at tonnes of combos & amp/cabs before getting mine & feel I made the right choice.
