Have a look in the classifieds on here. What's your budget?
Bon voyage, mon cher.
Cheers Monsieur

I'll try & get mine finished tomorrow morning, else I'll not get an entry as I'm off stateside for the rest of the mumph.

Can you play 12 bar blues at @ 180 bpm? That's most rock n roll songs covered. I enjoy playing the odd RnR song for fun, but I'd hate to be in an RnR band, just because so many of the songs are the same pattern & similar bass lines. If you like the songs, then go for it. It's band experience (something you can't learn at home).

I tried a Jaco next to a USA fretless Jazz & it was a slightly better instrument, but not £500 better.
Most of the components are sourced from the Far East ( presumably due to lower labour costs) , so on that basis would probably rule it out for you anyway...!?
I'd still buy an amp with far east components if I had to, just that I prefer to keep more manufacturing jobs in the countries of origin (though many businesses don't seem to agree to that). The amp I have just now has nothing from the Far East in it, but it's older than most BC members.

I'd rather pay the extra to have something made in the country of origin. I don't agree with exploiting countries for cheap labour & I'm already forced to pay for things that are made in the Far East as there's often no alternatives made closer to home.

Much of the above & to be made in Italy.
Why? Just make sure your cab(s) are up to the job.
& the OP's Mesa is probably more than up to the job.
-
The only problem with that approach, is that you're potentially limiting the amps that you can use & may miss out on the one with the killer tone.
-
I'd have thought it was the majority of cabs, at least if they're used alone.
Now you've got me worried! Think I'll go IEM as my cab is rated at 500w & I've no clue what my amp is (probably 200w as it has 4 KT88's in it).
-
To be honest, Bill. I've never even heard of the 'myth of under powering', though as you describe it as a myth, I won't bother looking it up! I started playing in the 70s, when the accepted standard was a cab rated at double the potential output of the amp. I have learnt to accept a smaller safely margin than that over the years, but would never plug a cab into an amp capable of delivering more power than the cab could handle.
That could potentially rule out the majority of amps.
-
Only if you were very foolish. But then you could have as equally as catastrophic results being foolish if you had a 300w amp plugged into a 400w cab.

I know the feeling well. I'd love to be able to just go & buy something like a Dingwall (Ritter Roya is a dream bass for me). Between me & Mrs x, we earn enough, but there's that many other things demanding our hard earned. We're going on a family holiday in a couple of weeks, which is costing a small fortune (& we don't even have kids!). The spending money alone could buy me a 2nd hand Roya! Though we have been putting a chunk of our wages by for the past 2 years for this & the previous holiday, which was our first abroad in 9 years. Then when I come back, the car needs it's 1st mot & a service. It also needs 3 new tyres. Every time one of us gets a bonus or some extra pennies come our way, something always pops up & takes it off me. So I feel the OP's pain. I've been playing the same Ibanez bass since 1990 (though it is a rather nice bass to play, sounds good & if it had 5 strings, I'd probably only have GAS for a fretless). How Skidder manages to get gear with so few gigs has me amazed. If I want a new Squier Jazz, 100 gigs. Ampeg SVT CL, rob the bar at a gig.

Does this mean he's now gonna have to change his ID to Even Happier Jack? Big congrats to you both. Scrubbed up well for a couple of bassists!
I've worked with some VSTs before I got my Phatty and it may sound similar (or identical) but still it feels different. I like the "offline" feel of a real synth. When I played a Minimoog reissue...My oh my.
I know exactly what you mean. Even though the NI S88 is a great remote keyboard & the ribbons for pitch & mod are fantastic, it's not a Moog. I've played my mates Phatty a few times & it's just such an expressive instrument. One hand on the keys, the other on the dials. I've hankered for a voyager for some time, but I couldn't justify buying one when there's so many other things I need.

Can't get a mic set up to record vocals, so Logic had to help me out. I've put a kick through a broken speaker emulator, so don't panic. Here's my entry... https://soundcloud.com/gxmix/one-last-note I might actually work on this with the band & see if we can work the arrangement. It's a fun bassline to play (though I've added a synth bass alongside).

I really didn't think I was gonna get anything done for this month, but I had some free time tonight so pulled my finger out. I'm not posting yet, as I'm off on Friday, so I hope to pop a vocoder vocal on it (I still can't sing). I think I've captured a mix of beauty & destruction so far. Looking forward to listening to the other entries too.
I'm very much a Moog newbie, so if there is a viable/obvious Moog alternative, what would it be?
VST version, Native Instruments Monark. A/B'd it next to a Phatty & it's almost identical. The cut off position is slightly brighter on the Phatty, meaning you have to turn the cut off dial up a touch further on the Monark to get the same sound.

Fender Rumble 60 at a rehearsal studio..... really??
xgsjx replied to markdavid's topic in General Discussion
I think 60 watts isn't the issue, but more the driver/cab side of the combo not being designed to be played loud. It's interesting reading about the kick drum issue. I noticed it at our last jam. Though bass & guitar were a bit on the loud side. -
Giving the sound tech what they want - potential stupid question alert
If you think your bass sound is best left to the sound engineer, then you probably have a very "vanilla" bass sound, and if so, you're correct. I have a very dirty bass sound indeed. I've done the same as others and just have an amp sim with DI out at the end of my chain, and give the soundman that
There's a phrase I've never really understood, though I get fully what you mean. Vanilla. Vanilla isn't cheap, it has a unique flavour & just about everybody likes it. Cheap "vanilla" ice cream on the other hand, not many people like it & it doesn't even taste of vanilla! -
They'll probably stick a knackered £10 Behringer DI in front of the amp, from past experience.
Haha, that's true! -

Bring me up to speed on the world of bass amps
xgsjx replied to richardjmorgan's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've got a big valve amp. I've had a lightweight class D. Both sounded different. Both sounded equally as good & bot got compliments. If you get a lame sound from a class D, then it's maybe not the map, but the bass/player.
