1. Not counting the bass in bits in the shed, I've mostly been a 1 bass guy over the past 30 odd years. The Ibby does just about everything that I want it to. However, later in the year that may well change. I'm finding more use for the need of a 5 string. Drop D is fine on what I have, but some songs could do with that low C or even B. I'm also tempted by fretlessness. Every time I play a fretless, I just love it. & then there's the idea of getting an electroacoustic, just so I can jam with the dad in law doing folk songs without having to take my wee combo down. Tempted to get a Warwick Alien fretless 5. But then, how much would I actually play it acoustically & would the fretless sound okay when playing a bassline that wasn't originally on fretless?
2. The Mrs has a [s]bed[/s]bowlback Ovation. It's been in the inlaws loft for the past 5 or so years. Fine if you're standing up, but try playing it without a strap whilst seated. It wants the strings to face your chest!
3. If they string it out, look for compensation to cover cab hire for the time that this was out of commission.
4. If you've got home insurance, check if you have legal services cover. That would be my first call. Did you take any pics of the packaging for proof?
5. Most pre 70s RnR. Just change the lyrics. If RnR never came out in the 50s/60s, but instead now, just think how many law suits there's be!
6. Cheers all. Sounds like the DI between the amp & cab is going to be fine. I've no idea how many watts the amp can put out, but I doubt it's much more than 100. Still torn between this & a Preamp DI pedal It'll not be until after I come back from holiday at the end of July that I get one, so plenty of time to decide.
Having re-read the OP, a standard DI box will not substitute for a speaker. It doesn't contain a dummy load, so if you're using a valve amp, you must connect one of those or a speaker to avoid destroying the output transformer. Some solid state amps are OK without a load (although they can get a bit hot - probably best to use one).
I didn't put it in my first post, but the amp & cab will always be used together.
7.
Have a look at this Palmer PD09. You can plug the speaker out directly into it AND it has a speaker simulation built in that appears to work really nicely (I don't have one, but listened to a lot of demos on guitar), so you can get a nice sound for recording, monitoring with headphones... https://www.anderton...eaker-emulation
Funny enough, it was the PD-09 that I first saw & then looked to see what else they do. Then I saw the PAN-01 & thought it was just a cheaper version of it.
What's the reason for trying to put it between the amp and speaker? A DI like the one in your picture just sits between your guitar/bass and the amp, and the xlr output goes to the desk. It doesn't get much simpler... Or maybe I'm missing something?
I'd like to get the sound of my amp as well as the bass (an all valve Radiovox) out to the desk.
8. I hadn't planned on making one of those contraptions, though a few had made one & said they had no issues. I'll have a look & see what BSS offer & also the Behringer DI100.
9.
"integrated switchable resistor network for extremely high input level" sounds promising. Will you be using a cab as well as the DI? If not, as mentioned above you'll need to be sure that the DI presents a dummy load in order to keep the amp happy.
I'd always use a cab with the amp.
10.
Two things I think here. Firstly, and mainly. Please, don't DIY something like this. In terms of disasters, you've got everything from it breaking on you mid song, through damaging your amp, right the way up to death and everything in between. Secondly, I think you may be confusing active and passive DI boxes with speaker and intrstrument level DI boxes. DI boxes can be instrument level, line level, speaker level or more than one of those. And any of these types of DI box can be active (requires electricity to work) or passive (doesn't).
Don't worry about the 1st part, it's highly unlikely to get done & if it was, I'd be getting help from someone who knows what they're doing. Your second part hits pretty much what I wasn't sure of. Being a stranger to DI boxes, I had assumed that passive would work at speaker level. At church I run my bass to tuner/mute pedal to a small active DI box that runs phantom off the XLR & use IEM to hear me, the band & MD. The more I'm thinking about it, the more I'm thinking DI box with a preamp (such as a sansamp) between the bass & amp. This way I can use it with or without the rig. Both options are on the table still.
11. Oooh! Cheers chaps. That's what I want. I don't really want to be spending over £100 (preferably less than £50). Anyone used one of the cheaper ones, like that Millenium one?
12.
I may be wrong, but it sounds like you want to connect the amp's speaker out to the DI? not such a good idea for the amp or the DI.
That's exactly what I was wanting to do. I had originally started googling how to wire in a DI to the amp, possibly taking it just from the pre amp section. But the first thing I found was someone suggesting this to someone with a similar question... Parts needed: 1/4" jack one 100 ohm resistor one 2200 ohm resistor a few inches of wire two alligator clips 1. Take a 1/4" jack and install the 100 ohm resistor from hot to ground. Don't solder it yet. 2. Tie a few inches of hook up wire to the ground lead and solder it. You will simultaneously solder the 100 ohm resistor lead to ground. 3. Connect the 2200 ohm resistor to the hot lead and solder it. You will simultaneously solder the other lead of the 100 ohm resistor to hot. 4. On the free end of the 2200 ohm and also on the free end of the wire, solder an alligator clip You are done. Clip the two alligator clips to the + and - of a speaker and you now have a line out. This will drive almost anything. ( another amp, mixer, effects pedals, etc.) Then someone else suggested the passive di box idea. The thread never came to a comclusion though. I had considered getting an active di, as the rig should have no probs filling the church & the soundy could give me that bit extra clarity & oomph across the congregation.
13. I've got a valve amp which has no DI & instead of a "speaker" socket, it has 2 spring loaded terminals. So the speaker cable has a jack on one end only. Today after church, one of the MDs asked why I didn't bring my rig. I told him that it would need mic'd up. When I got home, it got me curious about getting it DIable. So, after a short google, I found this... http://www.palmergear.com/pan01.shtml Anyone tried one? Would this allow me to DI from the amp to the desk without issue? I don't see why it wouldn't, but as I've no experience of DI boxes, I thought where better to ask than here.
14. 2 days ago I was given 5 worship songs to learn for Sunday morning, which is generous as I usually get the set list either Thursday evening or some time on Friday. One of them I've heard before, the other 4 are unknown to me. I got given links to the Youtube vids & chord sheets as PDFs. One of the songs is not in the original key (it's up a 5th), but it's straightforward enough. As of last night, I can play all the songs comfortable with the PDFs in front of me. This evening & tomorrow evening I'll spend a couple of hours practicing them without the PDFs, so on Sunday I can enjoy playing. The good thing about these songs is that they only have about 4-5 chords & are easily broken down into Verse, Pre, Chorus, Bridge 1 & Bridge 2. Then you watch/listen to the MD for how the arrangement progresses. The other band that I'm in, well the songs are there, but not ready to gig.
15. Finished mine. I've tried to mix soft sounds with aggressive tones to try & get the feel of being in amongst the buildings. From the outset you get the first explosion & then what comes after. Then another explosion & the waiting for things to hit you, the fear builds & then boom. All hell breaks loose. Well, that's what I've tried for. Not sure if you'll see the same. But I've had fun making it. https://soundcloud.com/gxmix/ending
16.
Great basses imho.
That pic was taken 5 years ago. Sadly, it's still looking the same. But... I've now decided I'm going to start working on it & refinsh & rebuild it. Heck, I might even get a scratch plate made for it! I think I'll paint this one (rather than wood finish).
17.
Hi, I have a vox standard bass with a Di Marzio P pick up near the bridge...sounds great..quite similar in many ways to a J type in the same position.
I've got one of those. It was my 1st bass. Needs a bit of TLC, but I'm working on it. I've also defretted it. Still have the original hardware & pick ups too.
18. I use finger sweat. Occasionally I'll grab the string between my fingers & wipe or rub with the butt of the palm of my hand if needed. Oh, I use flatwound strings.
19. I've always wanted to use that!
20. If the cab part of the combo isn't very efficient, then no amount of amp power is gonna make it any better without either A, spending more than your budget or B, ending up with something that weighs more than the current rig.
21. You do know watts are only a small part of the equation. My rig is probably only a 100w amp, but put through a 4x10 & it can shift some air. Going through PA, you could use my 30w combo & be heard by the band (I know this works as I have done it). Look at how many decibels the rig can muster, look at the spl, but don't think a 500 watt rig is gonna definitely be louder than a 100w one.
22. I wouldn't worry so much about the watts & more about the weight.
23.
Very clefer
Oooh, that's sharp.
24. Brilliant. I'll have to share that with the worship team.
